Hev Abi (born 2001 or 2002)[1] is a Filipino rapper who hails from Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City. He gained popularity in 2023 with a string of successful singles, starting with the viral "WELCOME2DTQ". He also started his own independent record label, Downtown Q Entertainment. In October, Abi released his debut album Kung Alam Mo Lang. Career

Early work and breakthrough (2020–2023)

Hev Abi's earliest release on Spotify was the 2020 single "Pusong Bato", which he followed with an extended play (EP) titled Kwentong Jimenez in 2021. In 2022, he released two more records, PAUTANG NG PAG-IBIG and Sakred Boy.[2][a] Abi gained mainstream recognition in 2023 when his single "WELCOME2DTQ" slowly spread through word of mouth and went viralonline. On TikTok, it has been used in over a million clips, including by celebrities such as Vice Ganda.[4][5] Amassing millions of streams,[5] the song became his first on Billboard’s Philippines Songs Chart in October. It stayed there for four weeks, entering and peaking at No. 20.[‡ 1][‡ 2]

Hev Abi's newfound social media popularity earned him a string of successful singles, including "Para sa Streets", "QC Girls", "and "Lil Kasalanan Shortie".[6][7][8] He also helped start an independent record label, Downtown Q Entertainment, based in the 1103 area of downtown Q.C., where he collaborates with other rappers.[7][9] It has signed the artists Kristina Dawn, gins&melodies, Unotheone, and Simmo,[9] all of whom featured on Hev Abi's debut album.[4] Fans dubbed Abi "Rookie of the Year" in Pinoy hip hop.[4][7][10] In Rappler's list of the year's breakthrough OPM acts, it called Hev Abi "arguably one of the biggest", since all his 2023 releases had done well.[11]

Kung Alam Mo Lang and commercial success (2023)

On October 20, 2023, Hev Abi released his debut album,[b] the twelve-track Kung Alam Mo Lang ("If Only You Knew").[4] It is a more vulnerable record with themes of unconditional love; the first half is about romance and the second, replete with features, deals with strong friendships.[12] Abi described the album as an outlet for his emotions after he went through several private, impactful events in the months before its release.[8]

Aside from being on Esquire Philippines and SunStar Davao's year-end lists of the best OPM releases, Kung Alam Mo Lang received little critical attention.[6] Esquire Philippines' Paul John Caña thought it had an impressive "kind of polish and finesse" usually reserved for experienced artists.[13] However, the album was a streaming success. On October 26, it debuted as the 78th most-played OPM album on Spotify. It has now been the most-played for 16 consecutive weeks from January to May 2024.[14] At least three songs from the album have entered Billboard's Philippines Songs Charts: "Alam Mo Ba Girl", which has been on it for 26 consecutive weeks; "Walang Alam"; and "Sumugal".[‡ 3]

After Kung Alam Mo Lang, Hev Abi continued to release singles and collaborations, starting with R&B singer DEMI on "Pakundangan".[15] In February 2024, The Philippine Star's Baby A. Gil noticed that Pinoy hip-hop had taken over the country's music charts—and the most successful rapper was Hev Abi. On Spotify, where he had five of the Top 25 Philippine songs,[5] Abi had accrued over two million monthly listeners.[8] He appeared on three consecutive No. 1 songs on the Philippines Songs Charts. "Makasarili Malambing", a Kristina Dawn song which he featured on, and "Alam Mo Ba Girl" each took the spot for a week in February 2024.[‡ 4][‡ 5] Another song Abi featured on, "Babaero" by gins&melodies, was No. 1 for the next five weeks.[‡ 6] Gil thought modern Filipino rap sounded closer to pop, "softer" and more "lovelorn". While he thought they were worthy competitors for Filipino pop artists, Gil questioned whether the rookie rappers such as Abi would "stand the test of time".[5]

In April, Hev Abi became the first local artist to have eight simultaneous tracks on the Philippines Songs Charts and the most-played male OPM artist on Spotify.[16][17] He held his first solo concert, Morato Most Wanted, in Quezon City's New Frontier Theater on the 28th.[17] Supporting acts included Illest Morena, Dawn, and gins&melodies.[18]

Artistry

Abi's hip-hop has a sense of "duality". While some songs such as "Para Sa Streets" feature more relaxed vocals, his more aggressive rap delivery has been shown in songs such as "WELCOME2DTQ".[8][11] His variety also comes across in Kung Alam Mo Lang, from the UK garage-inspired "Sumugal" (lit. 'Take a Chance') to the boom bap of "Alam Mo Ba Girl", a song about a secret relationship. Abi can also sing.[7]

His inspirations include Kanye West; Tyler, the Creator; Pharrell Williams; and Filipino producers such as pxyche. Scout describes his songs as exuding "confidence and bravado".[8] Although he has a general concept for each song, Abi writes the lyrics offhand,[12] dere-derecho. His songs are produced by NJ.[7]

Hev Abi is from Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City, but little else is known about his personal life, which Gil wrote was a perhaps unintentional but clever "marketing gimmick".[5]
