Jason Randolph Johnston (born July 10, 1979 in McAllen, TX) is an American artist, photographer, writer and independent filmmaker. He is also a Christian though his work rarely seems influenced by his faith.
Autobiography
I was raised by my mother (Carol Ann Blackwell Johnston) and father (George Milton Johnston) in San Juan, TX with my sister (Crystal Ann Johnston Noble Mohr). I have two brothers-in-law (ex, Tom Noble and current, Kendall Mohr) from marriage to my sister. Crystal and Tom had conceived a son before their divorce in 2006; Ethan Hunter, my nephew.
Extended family includes Patricia Ann Blackwell Carlisle Blackwell (my mother's sister) and her husband, uncle-by-marriage Dwayne Blackwell (no relation to my mother's maiden name), uncle Jack Johnston (my father's brother) and his wife Jan. Back in the day Patricia was married to Creg Carlisle and they conceived my cousins Cody and Cori. Cody has since married Adeline previously from Belgium, and Cori has since married Brent O'Brien and together they have a daughter, Brooke. Another uncle on my mother's side is Robert "Bobby" Blackwell who has disappeared from the public eye. His whereabouts have been unknown since the early 1990s.
On October 12, 2007, my father passed away at around 1:39 AM CST at our home in San Juan. My mother and I stood by him at his bedside. His body was later cremated. The memorial service was held at Bit O'Heaven, a retirement village where my father liked to play steel guitar, on Thursday, October 18 at 1 PM.
Career
Mr. Johnston is the television promotions department for a local Fox affiliate where he serves as a video editor, camera operator, director, animator, writer and voice-over talent. He is also the sole proprietor of a photography and graphic design company that bears his name: J. R. Johnston Photography.
Personal life
Jason lives in San Juan, TX which is just north of the US-Mexico border and sits comfortably near the Gulf of Mexico. His pet cat (named Cat) gradually de-evolved into an outdoor animal and successfully hunted avian. Jason enjoys playing the piano, writing songs, singing, developing scripts and pursuing independent filmmaking, animation and visual effects.
Photography
Mr. Johnston was a photographer for the PSJA High School newspaper publication The Bear's Tale during his junior and senior years in high school. His freelance career began in 1997 with the purchase of his first camera: a Canon EOS Rebel XS 35mm film camera.
Jason's current equipment consists of a Canon EOS 20D digital SLR camera with BG-E2 Vertical Battery Grip, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lenses, a Canon 420EX Speedlite, a Bogen/Manfrotto 681B pro monopod and a few specialty lenses. Jason has a working studio in his Texas home that utilizes a monolight strobe system, as well as a portable system complete with light modifiers, reflectors and a collapsible background.
