Coronado High School is a public secondary school located at 1001 Coronado Center Drive in Henderson, NV, part of Clark County School District. It admits students in grades 9-12. The school's mascot is the Cougar, and the school colors are red, white and blue. It is a public school that contains roughly 3,000 students, and has 114 certified professional staff members. The current administrators are:
- Principal: Lee Koelliker
- Assistant Principals: Paul Fagone (Activities/Discipline), Sam Johnson (Athletics/Facilities), and Bob Mars (Curriculum)
- Deans: Louis Hendrickx and Marla Kober
History
The school was named after a Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador, who between 1540 and 1542 visited New Mexico and other parts of the southwest of what is now the United States. It was opened during the 2001-2002 school year, with the first official graduating class in 2002-2003.
Extracurricular Activities
Clubs
There are a variety of over 50 activities a student can participate in while attending. Clubs range from Spanish Club to French and German Club, to Teenage Republicans and Young Democrats club and even a Forensics and AP club.
Forensics
Coronado High School's forensics team is one of the best in the Golden Desert District. It has had quarter-finalists, semi-finalists, and finalists in the district tournament. This year, the team is looking to do extremely well with qualifying students for the National Tournament sometimes in June.
Athletics
Sports range from golf to football,
Football
The 2003-2004 varsity football team, coached by Paul Berg, featured Nevada's first ever female player, Ali Smallwood.[citation needed] Smallwood was chosen for the All-Sunrise Region Second Team in the 2004-2005 season, once again making history.
Cross Country
The cross country team is coached by Mark Tondryk, the successor of Coach Steve Behm. The men's 2006 cross country team placed fourth in state, while the women's placed eighth. The 2007 women's team placed first at regionals.
Wrestling
Coached by Bob Clements, sending a multitude of athletes to state each year, including Austin Byrd, Alberto Ruiz, Josh Barnes, and Mark Rillera.
Swim team
The men's team won the sunrise region during the 05-06' season. and finished 3rd at state championships. The women's team won the sunrise region during the 05-06' season and finished 1st at state championships. Brook Brayman is the swimming team's coach.
Bowling team
Since the school's opening, Bob McKee has led the girl's and men's bowling team to success. The men bowlers captured back to back Nevada State Championships in 2004 and 2005, while the women bowlers took the Nevada State Championship in both 2006 and 2007.
Golf team
The men's golf team won back to back regional championships in 01'-02' & 02'-03' season. The first state champion of the school was golfer Matt Edwards, who moved on to play for UNLV's golf team. He now plays for NMSU's golf team where he won the 05'-06' WAC Championship as an individual and a team.
Cougar Pride Marching Band
Coronado's band is directed by Danielle McCracken and Benjamin Franke. The drum majors for the 2007 marching season are Patricia Reyes, Maurice Robbins, Nathan Pandian. The band made finals at the Bands of America performance at Northern Arizona University, only the fourth school to do so in the history of Clark County School District. They also performed in finals at the Las Vegas Invitational, located at Las Vegas High School. The band consists of 174 members, including a six-member drum line. The have traveled to San Diego, London, to march in the New Year's day parade, and to Washington D.C. to perform in the national cherry blossom festival.
Music Groups
Big Beat Battalion is a rap group widely recognized by students of Coronado. Smooth J, a member of group, teaches social studies at the school. Official Website
Other notable local bands have members at the school, such as Shredmill, Dayoff, the Tramlines, The Sharkicorns, Syndicate, One Pin Short, Coral, and Preferred Meat.
Academics
- Coronado High School has been named as high achieving according to the state guidelines for two out of past three years.
- Many different AP classes are offered to students, ranging from Computer Science to U.S.– History and Chemistry to Psychology.
- About 40 percent go to four year colleges and 30 percent enter two year community colleges after graduating senior year.
