Françoise Marie de Bourbon, Duchess of Orléans (May 25, 1677February 1, 1749) was the sixth illegitimate child and last daughter of Louis XIV of France and Madame de Montespan, one of the most famous royal mistresses in history.

Early life

Born at the Château of Madame de Maintenon on 25 May 1677, Françoise-Marie was given the courtesy title of Mademoiselle de Blois like her older half-sister, Marie Anne de Bourbon. She was raised by Madame de Colbert and her junior, Mme de Jussac. In 1681 at the age of four, Françoise-Marie was legitimated by Louis XIV; her mother was surprised by such a gift as she had fallen out of the king's favor due to the recent Affair of the Poisons. Subsequently Louis XIV did the same for Françoise-Marie's brother, the future Comte de Toulouse — however, the king's relationship with his son was to break up in later years.

Although his trust in Montespan had diminished, Louis XIV continued to shower her with gifts, one of which was to secure their last daughter, Françoise-Marie, a lavish marriage.

Marriage

The marriage that the king secured for Françoise-Marie was to her first cousin, the 'Duc de Chantres' Philippe Charles, heir to Louis's younger brother and later the Duke of Orléans.

This came as a shock to Philippe Charles's mother, the Princess Palatine, whose prejudice against the royal bastards was well-known. Upon learning of his plans, she slapped Philippe Charles around the face. Despite this, the marriage won the favor of the king.

The oft-unhappy marriage lasted for 29 years, having taken place on 9 January 1692. Their union produced eight children:

  1. Mademoiselle de Valois (17 December 169317 October 1694)
  2. Marie Louise Elisabeth (20 August 169521 July 1719). Married Charles, Duke of Berry.
  3. Louise Adélaïde (13 August 169810 February 1743).
  4. Charlotte Aglaé (20 October 170019 January 1761). Married Francis III, Duke of Modena.
  5. Louis, Duke of Orléans (4 August 17034 February 1752).
  6. Louise Elisabeth (11 December 170916 June 1742). Married Louis, King of Spain.
  7. Philippine Elisabeth (18 December 171421 May 1734).
  8. Louise Diane (27 June 171626 September 1736).

Later years

In 1701 she lost the title of Duchesse de Chantres and gained the title of Duchesse d'Orleans when her father-in-law died, leaving the couple the famous Orleans residences which included the Paris Palais Royal ('given' to the couple in 1692) as well as the Château de Saint-Cloud.

After her husband's regency, which ended upon his death in 1723, she retired to St Cloud. It was at the the Château de Saint-Cloud that she died on February 1, 1749. She was the last of her siblings to die and outlived her husband by 26 years.
