The Boatlift is the third studio album from Miami rapper Pitbull and was released on November 27, 2007. The singles are "Sticky Icky", "Secret Admirer", "Go Girl" and "The Anthem".

The album debuted #50 with sales of 22,203 copies in its first week, far below expectations. Second week sales fell to #134 selling 9,686 copies, bringing the total to 32,084.[1]

Musical Influence

On Pitbull’s MySpace Page the artist’s photo appears where it is accompanied by the phrase: “too Latin for hip-hop, too hip-hop for Latins” [2]. Pitbull, a Miami-born Cuban-American rapper considers his influences to be: former member of 2 Live Crew Luther Campbell, poet José Marti, 2 Live Crew-sponsored group Poison Clan, and rap group 2 Live Crew, a group that controversially produced sexually explicit material from 1985 to the present [3]. The rapper’s biography on www.pitbullmusic.com states that his work is “brimming with sexy Caribbean influences” and is influenced by “merengue, Bachata and Afro-Cuban” [4]. Pitbull has collaborated with his mentor Lil Jon to create the track entitled “The Anthem” in this album.

Current Projects

In addition to Pitbull’s musical endeavors, the author is also working on other business ventures. For example, the Cuban MC has recently completed the first season of his television show, La Esquina, which chronicles broad themes of homosexuality and immigration from a comedic viewpoint [5]. Accordingly, it is important to think about the individuals that have shaped Pitbull’s attitudes, including individuals that he does not condone, like Fidel Castro [6]. It is vital to consider the context in which Pitbull has seen Cuba exist throughout his life. The collpase of the Soviet Union and the end of its preferential trade arrangements with Cuba in 1991 led to the most profound upheavals in the island’s economy and society since the 1959 revolution [7]. Pitbull is also beginning his very first cartoon called “Rock, Pepe, Scissors” which he claims will be politically incorrect and largely shaped by his ideology and disapproval regarding Fidel Castro[8].
