Harper's Island is an hour-long American murder mystery series created by Ari Schlossberg for CBS's 2008-2009 television season. It premiered on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 10:01 pm ET/PT. The show will be 13 episodes long, and at least one character will be killed off each week.

Development

The show was created by Ari Schlossberg who also wrote the pilot script and developed by CBS for the 2008-2009 Television Season.[1] In March 2008 CBS ordered a 15 minute pilot presentation of the project. In May 2008 the show was retooled, with Jeffrey Bell coming onboard as showrunner and Jon Turteltaub as an executive producer. Schlossberg remained onboard as a co-executive producer along with Karim Zriek and Dan Shotz.[2] Bell subsequently rewrote the first episode which Jon Turteltaub would direct. During the retooling process many of the castmembers from the pilot-presentation were replaced, including Ryan Merriman (Henry Dunn), Samantha Noble (Trish Wellington) and Bill Pullman (Uncle Marty).[3] Actors that remained with the show from pilot-presentation to the aired television pilot include Elaine Cassidy, Cameron Richardson, Adam Campbell, Matt Barr, Brandon Jay McClaren, Cassandra Sawtell, Sean Rogerson, C.J. Thomason and Chris Gauthier.

Plot

The television show is a horror/drama, described as Scream meets And Then There Were None (the mystery novel by Agatha Christie).

The central plot is a murder mystery. Friends and family attending a wedding celebration on a secluded island off the coast of Seattle and one-by-one die. The island was also the scene of a famous series of murders seven years prior.[4]

In addition to a web series based on the show, CBS's multimedia promotion includes a live online chat on a Fancast Forum each Friday with the "murder victim" from the Thursday night U.S. broadcast, where questions and comments from viewers trying to solve the mystery are encouraged, as well as providing a behind-the-scenes view from the series.

Harper's Globe

Harper's Globe is a social show produced by EQAL and CBS. It is the online equivalent to the CBS television show, Harper's Island.[5] The show will last for sixteen weeks. Harper's Globe will be the first EQAL show not to be a part of the LG15 Franchise. The series stars Melanie Merkosky, who played the character Jennie, in lonelygirl15.

The show will be following the story of Harper's Globe, a newspaper in conjunction with Harper's Island. The main character of the social show, Robin, who is also a minor character in the television series, will video blog about her experiences on Harper's Island along with interacting with the community about the mysteries that occur. The show will be premiering its weekly episodes on March 18, 2009, although daily posts began on March 10, 2009.

Creator Miles Beckett says of the series, "The story of Harper's Globe is about a girl named Robin, with a very mysterious past, who's gone to Harper's Island to work for the newspaper, Harper's Globe, and to digitize articles from the newspaper and to create a community online for the Harper's Globe newspaper and the citizens of Harper's Island. And then she gets pulled into the story as it begins to unfold on the island."[6]
