An interesting CFD

Why do you think that this CFD generated so much interest so many new users ? Watchdogb (talk) 17:42, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because newbies are taking us back to pre WP:SLR days. We had spared Wikipedia of these silly arguments for the last 2 years. Taprobanus (talk) 18:35, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your views

Chola mediation

Hi, why did you not leave a message either on the Chola talk page or on my talk page regarding what changes I seek to the page. Well of course I am working on them. Sadly two books I purchased at Tiruchy (one was Ancient India by K.A.N.Sastry) were left at my mom's house at Srirangam.

Of course, I found that around 2-3 Jan. it seems Yellow Monkey entered the Chola article and made changes to the list of great kings by removing the names of Aditya I, Parantaka I, Vira Rajendra, Kulothunga III etc. among others. Just now I left a message on the Talk: Chola Dynasty for Sebastian and on his talk page also, requesting him to examine the same.

Is the kind of intrusion by YellowMonkey allowed? that too into a blocked article that is under neutral mediation by Sebastian.

Anyways, can you and Sebastian examine the change I sought on that talk page? Thanks. It seems Sebastian did not like my formatting of the same request made earlier. I wanted to type plain words, but somehow they got entangled into a table typed above them. Well, being a new editor these problems I will face for some more time, I guess. But kindly help out if possible.

Srirangam99 (talk) 06:47, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Taps. One point regarding inclusion of Kulothunga III among notable rulers was amicably resolved. Dinesh chipped in too. It was nice of him. Dinesh quoted and I did not disagree or dispute (rather that material is quite helpful in zeroing on the period of the actual) Decline of the Cholas. As per 4-5 incidents quoted by Dinesh the Decline of Cholas was between 1213 (definitely after 1210 AD to 1279/81 AD when they ceased to exist).

So I have sought two changes (presently I am insisting on the first part) that the decline of the Cholas started (not in the beginning of the 12th century but) in the beginning of the 13th century (AD 1212 onwards) and their rule came to an end (in 1279/81 AD) in the 3rd quarter of the 13th century.

Can you help with this. Dinesh quoted extensively about attack of Pandiyans, help to the Cholas by Hoysalas, restoration of rule of the Cholas with Hoysala help, all after AD 1210 -- which actually reinforce the above contention of their decline starting from beginning of 13th century.

(My second point will be of course, about Hoysalas NOT being the cause of their decline - mainly because they fought alongside the Cholas and because they were (1) friendly and non-adversarial to the Cholas and (most important) (2) the demise of the Cholas was not followed (automatically and never indeed) by the establishment of rule of at least the Chola areas by the Hoysalas, but it was the Pandiyans who had been rising like a phoenix right from 1170 AD in the Tamil country, who eventually replaced the Cholas in Tanjore/Uraiyur(Tiruchy), Kanchi, and of course their own areas Madurai/Tirunelveli/Kanniyakumari/Ilam. But all of this will be later. But for the present can you help in placing the appropriate citation (as requested by me on the [Talk: Chola Dynasty] page)?

Your guidance will be invaluable. Thanks.

Srirangam99 (talk) 05:37, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Taps,

Long time no hear from you. But even I have been busy. I have this book by Prof. K.A.N.Sastri 'A history of South India : from Prehistoric times to the fall of Vijayanagar' in which the description even in contemporaneous terms are about the Cholas being an empire and not a dynasty (which is of course how the nay-sayers on Wikipedia might like it to be). The Cholas as an empire are described on scores of pages including Chapter IX page 156 which is titled 'Balance of Two Empires' (it is mainly about Chalukyas and Cholas).

The Cholas are described as an empire from as early as the times of King Parantaka I who lost Kanchi and Thanjai to Rashtrakuta Krishna III and this is described as 'Tondaimandalam having been recovered from the Rashtrakutas for the Chola empire - page 163. also scores of instances including this one:

(Krishna III): 'He assumed the title ' Conqueror of Kacci and Thanjai' and thus caused the Chola empire a rude shock at the close of Parankata's reign' (p. 162). then also please see this:

p.163.. "The real greatness of the Chola empire dates, however, from the accession of Arumolivarman, who crowned himself Rajaraja ...................

I do not want to raise any controversy but consider this that in contrast: in the same book: there is a chapter called : The age of four kingdoms (which is about the Hoysala, Seuna, Kakatiya and the Pandiya kingdoms which rose on the fall of the Chola empire) page 192.

In view of these and scores of other examples (I think you too said that there are more descriptions and internet hits on the Cholas describing them as an empire rather than as a dynasty), would it be justified and hence, possible to change the title of this wikipedia topic as Chola Empire (instead of the rotten Chola Dynasty)? My email i.d. is srirangam99@gmail.com. Do reply quickly and help me in this cause (along with other genuine contributors).

Re: Sri Lankan Tamil people

Thank you for your kind words and the barnstar. (I apologize for the late reply; I was essentially on 'wiki-vacation' for the past four months.)

I re-read the article and, in my opinion, it deserves to be featured. After reading the 2nd FA nomination, it seems to me that the primary objections to promoting the article are related to prose—primarily a need to more fully explain concepts that are unique to Sri Lankan Tamil society.

I hope to re-join discussions at SLR, and I'd also like to edit articles about Sri Lankan journalists assassinated in the past few years (at least nine, according to BBC), but I will also work on Sri Lankan Tamil people. The article has come too far not to be featured.

Hope you are well, –Black Falcon (Talk) 08:38, 5 February 2009 (UTC) P.S. I'm happy to see that Eelam was featured on DYK. Sorry I wasn't here at the time...[reply]

Eelam War IV

Hey. Sorry I don't know whether you know, but Mexico and others are trying to get this issue into the UN Security Council but it's being blocked by Russia and the UK. That, as well as the worldwide protests, recent atrocities, and international calls for ceasefire etc I think could go on the Eelam War IV page. Would you be willing to help out? Also, I wondered whether you found any more sources on these Declarations and Resolutions like the US Massachusetts House of Representatives et. al. recognising Eelam Tamils and the Tamil nation, and the restoration of their separate state? Help needed..

Hello Taprobanus,

thanks for polishing the [Chola_navy] article and moving it into article space. but, its been nearly 9 months since I asked some help over at people from Project Tamil to help me write some name and details in Tamil script, and Still no action...

If you know how to add tamil script you can make this article richer. I use A transliteration software which incidentally uses another codepage and just leaves some junk if copied.

Unfortunately, My tamil tying skills are not good o allow me to type in tamil ina US QWERTY Keyboard... Any help in this regard is highly welcome...

Hi

Hi! How are you? It has been a long time, hasn't it! I'm sorry I barely login to my Yahoo account once a month or once every two months or so.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 06:21, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-retired?

Hi Taprobanus. I hope your "semi-retirement" is a temporary response to real-life commitments, and not something permanent. You write excellent articles on a niche area about which Wikipedia (and the world in general) definitely needs more information, so I really do hope you'll be back in action before long. -- Arvind (talk) 17:15, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That does sound hard. Let me know if there're any articles you'd like me to keep an eye on while you're away. -- Arvind (talk) 21:44, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck with your endeavour. I'm planning to pare my watchlist down to a manageable limit. Will add some of the articles from your list to it. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 07:16, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tamil protests

Hello, are you Sri Lankan? Are you familiar with any of the Tamil protests that happened in the other countries? It would be great if you could create an article on one of the links that have not been made yet on the 2009 Tamil protests page. Thanks! Eelam StyleZ (talk) 11:54, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
