Jaya Bachchan (born Jaya Bhaduri April 9, 1948 in Calcutta - now Kolkata), is one of the most versitile and talented actresses of the Indian film industry. She is an alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India. After initial success in her native West Bengal, she moved to Mumbai and starred in many Hindi films. In 1973 two films of her, Zanjeer and Abhimaan were released. Her co-star in the film was Amitabh Bachchan with whom she had fallen in love. On June 3, 1973, she married him. They had 2 children in their marriage: Shweta Bachchan Nanda (b. 1974) and Abhishek Bachchan (b. 1976). After her son Abhishek was born she retired from films for a few years and focussed on raising her children. However, she came back in 1981 with Silsila and once more, after a gap of eight years, in Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa -- establishing herself, once again, as a superb portrayer of emotions on the silver screen.
She stars rarely in movies these days, although she does also some stage-shows. Of late, Bachchan became active in politics, notably with the Samajwadi party and is a M. P., representing the party in Rajya Sabha.
Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan, have acted in many a films together. With Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum, after a 20 year gap, the husband-wife pair returned to the silver screen creating a media frenzy like none other. Many of the movies they have acted together supposedly reflect their real life stories -- in Abhimaan, Amitabh portrays a jealous husband of a more successful artist; in Silsila, Amitabh has an extra marital affair with a woman played by Indian actress Rekha (with whom he supposedly also had an affair in real life) while being married to Jaya. She has lives her entire married life underneath the very bright, and invading, lights of the camera, yet she has always kept her distance from the media (espcially when it comes to her personal life).
Awards
She has received various Filmfare Awards -- most prestigious of Indian Film Awards -- for her roles in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Fiza, Nauker and Abhimaan. She also received a Special Filmfare Award in 1998 for her contributions to Indian cinema.
She is a recipient of the Padma Shri.
