Kesha

Kesha Rose Sebert (Template:PronEng; born March 1, 1987),[1] better known mononymously as Kesha (stylized as Ke$ha) is an American recording artist. Although she began her music career in 2006, her breakthrough came in early 2009 after appearing on Flo Rida's number one single, "Right Round." Kesha's debut single, "Tik Tok" was released in August 2009, preceding the release of her debut album, Animal, in early 2010.

Early life

Kesha was born in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles to a single parent.[2] Her mother, Pebe Sebert, a singer and songwriter, was struggling financially while supporting Kesha and her older brother at the time.[3] She would look after then infant Kesha onstage while performing.[4] Pebe moved the family to Nashville, Tennessee in 1991 after securing a publishing deal, and Kesha spent the rest of her early years attending St.Bernard Academy.[citation needed] Pebe often brought Kesha along to recording studios and encouraged her to sing, Kesha was exposed to the music of many country music artists while learning to write songs.[3] The Sebert family was featured in an episode of The Simple Life, as the host family.[5] She was already working on her music by then[5] and at the age of seventeen she dropped out of Brentwood High School in Nashville,[6] after being convinced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin,[4] to return to Los Angeles and pursue a music career.[3] Dr. Luke had come across her demos and was so impressed[4][6] that he contacted her with Martin and began a working relationship with her,[2][7] flying her to New York and Los Angeles to make music.[5] she also spent most of her teenage years as a crimanal for many things

Career beginnings

Kesha survived on low income and few gigs while pursuing her career at first,[8] moonlighting as a waitress to make ends meet while furthering her music career in studios with different producers[3] and writing songs for other artists.[2] Kesha lived with her alleged father when she first got to Los Angeles and subsequently moved in with a boy she was interested in,[2] she later lived in a shared mansion in Laurel Canyon.[1][9][5] She once wanted Prince to produce her music, so she snuck into his Beverly Hills home. Once discovered she was thrown out, but not before she left her demo with Prince.[2][3][7]

Between 2006 and 2009, Kesha's music appeared in a variety of media, her song "Former Overexposed Blonde" appeared in Degrassi: The Next Generation,[10] while "Backstabber"[11] and "Chain Reaction" were used in The Hills.[3] During this time, she also co-wrote The Veronicas' single, "This Love",[2][7] sang background vocals for Britney Spears' song "Lace and Leather"[9] and appeared in the video for Katy Perry's single, "I Kissed a Girl"[4] Her appearance in the video arose due to her being friends with Perry,[5] they met frequently as aspiring pop singers in Los Angeles and shared many musical collaborators.[12] Kesha was also given the opportunity of singing background for Paris Hilton's second single, which led to an incident later where Kesha vomited in Hilton's closet.[5]

She gained exposure in the mainstream media after being featured on Flo Rida's single, "Right Round".[8] The collaboration came about when Flo Rida decided that the song needed a female voice, Kesha was then roped in for the part after being suggested by Dr. Luke, who was producing the song.[3] Flo Rida liked the end result so much that he invited her to sing on another song, "Touch Me", for his album.[1] Kesha did not collect any money for the gig[2][8][5] and also turned down the offer to appear in the video for "Right Round" because she wanted to strike out on her own.[9] Soon after, it was announced that she had signed with RCA Records[8] through Dr. Luke and was working on her debut album,[3] Animal,[2] which is due to be released on January 5, 2010 in the US.[5] Her first single, "Tik Tok", was released to US radio on October 5, 2009.[13] It features a cameo appearance by Diddy.[12]

On March 27, 2009, she appeared onstage alongside 3OH!3 at a concert at Avalon Hollywood to perform their duet, "My First Kiss". She also performed at that year's Lollapalooza[9] as part of the BMI Stage. Sebert's musical credits in 2009 include work for Teen Cribs,[14][15] she had previously done background cues for My Super Sweet 16 as well,[16] co-writing the title song for Miley Cyrus'[2][7] The Time of Our Lives EP and appearances on Pitbull and Taio Cruz's albums. She revealed in an interview with DigitalSpy that she had written a song for Rihanna.[7] Kesha was a supporting act of Calvin Harris on tour in the UK[12] and performed with Mickey Avalon on tour dates in the US.[6]
