The Guyue Bridge (traditional Chinese: 古月橋, simplified Chinese: 古月桥, pinyin: Gǔ Yuè Qiáo) is an ancient Chinese arch bridge located in Yiwu, Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China[1].
"Gu" means ancient, "yue" means the moon, so "Guyue Bridge" literally means the bridge of acient moon.
Introduction
The bridge is located in Chi'an Village (traditional Chinese: 赤岸鎮, simplified Chinese: 赤岸镇, pinyin: Chì'àn Zhèn), and it's about 100-meter western of the Yazhi Street (雅治街). It goes across the Dragon Creek (traditional Chinese: 龍溪, simplified Chinese: 龙溪, pinyin: Lóng Xī).[2] [3]
It's a single span arch bridge. The design is very special, precisely speaking, its structure feature is girder-arch, and the girders are arranged like ribs. Such design can be found in the famous roll-painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival of Song Dynasty by Zhang Zeduan.[2]
The bridge was completed in the sixth year (year 1213) of the Jiading Era (traditional/simplified Chinese: 嘉定, pinyin: Jiā Dìng), Southern Song Dynasty. Since then it has never been rebuilt or repaired in history till now, which is also very rare.[2][3]
On the body of the bridge, it's engraved 12 Chinese characters: Huangsong Jiangding Guiyou Qiu Runyue Jianzao[3] (traditional/simplified Chinese: 皇宋嘉定癸酉季秋润月建造, pinyin: Huáng Sòng Jiā Dìng Guǐ Yǒu Jì Qiū Rùn Yuè Jiàn Zào)[1], which literally means: Constructed in Autumn September Imperial Song Jiangding Era the Year of Guiyou ("Huang" means Imperial. "Song" reveals Song Dynasty. "Jiading" is an era 1208-1224 of the Emperor Ningzong of Song. "Guiyou" is the year 1213, it's the Sexagenary cycle-way to record years in traditional Chinese calender. "Jiqiu" means the late autumn period of a year. "Runyue" implies September of that year, Runyue is a means of recording month in traditional Chinese calender, and means those shorter months - months that have 28, 29, 30 days).[2]
Basic parameters
The arch of the bridge over the river is pentagon. The span is 15 meters, and the height of the arch is 4.15 meters.[2][3]
The total length of the bridge is 31.2 meters. The width of the bridge is 4.5 meters. Each of the bridge approaches has a length of 8.1 meters. The gradient is 30°.[2]
The bridge in total has 30 stone bars, and 4 horizontal-locking stone bars.[3]
In June 2006, the bridge was announced as a National Historic Site & Cultural Heritage under State Protection (全國重點文物保護單位 / 全国重点文物保护单位) of China.[2][3] Now local people are worried about the conditions of the bridge due to increasing human activities and the weathering of the bridge's stones[4].
