Questions from...

Transcluded from User talk:NarSakSasLee/adoption

23 December 2009

Season's greetings! Okay, so I went absent for a long time I hope this hasn't phased you in any way. I'm looking for something to do is there any areas where you can direct me (such as a list of articles for clean up) in the anime and video games projects?? I'm usually bored and looking for something to do here ever since I finished DKC2 Also how do I create a template? I want one for my userpage. NarSakSasLee (talk) 12:23, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, I'm fine. In fact, it's probably a good thing that you didn't show up for a while. My life got a bit of an upheaval and it's messed up my editing abilities for a short time. Mostly fine now though. Anyway, hi! If you want, I can search for the anime WikiProject, but since I know where it is, here's the video games lists so far. This category contains pages marked for clean-up. This page, on the other hand, allows you to click on any of the importance or quality rating and be given links to all of them (though, as far as I can see, it's sadly impossible to pick both the importance and quality, so if you want to work on High-importance stubs, you'll need to search around for them). Secondly, exactly what sort of template are you looking for? Are you looking for a userbox, a page to transclude to the userpage (meaning that all of the coding is on a different page, thus tidying up the page a bit) or do you mean you want something like my new userpage? --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 12:43, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, well, i just hope your okay now with your life. As for the template I was think something like those at the bottom of articles. I want shortcuts, personalised of course, so I can quickly navigate to other articles, wikiprojects and clean up lists or catagories or even people. I didn't realise that userboxes were proper templates too. As for your userpage -- its far too complex for me because there is probably so much code that my brain may get frazzled. Yeah and I probably want them "transcluded" (such big words for a simple task!) how do I go about doing it?. NarSakSasLee (talk) 13:07, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What the...? Damn it! Sorry about the wait. I had responded about an hour or two after your question but the edit clearly didn't go through for some reason. (grumbling) Okay, let me see if I can remember what I'd said... First off, it's just a simple matter of doing this ("{{uaa|nb}}"). That's the most simple way to add a template. However, transcluding does have a few problems. If an alteration is made to the page being transcluded, that alteration will appear on all the pages it is being transcluded to. This is sometimes helpful (e.g. it allows me to see your responses here on my talk page). However, if a vandal attacks the page, it you may end up with a swear word on a couple of thousand pages, say. Hence, substition is sometimes used, like so ("{{subst:uaa|nb}}"). Depending on what the template is, you may want to transclude, you may want to substitute. It's complex, but you'll probably get the hang of it quickly enough. Anyway, as for the template, I'll create it for you and then tell you what I did (that'd be the easiest thing to do). Give me a bullet point list of everything you want in the template (and if you want them in any particular grouping or if that's left up to my judgement). I... err... think that's everything I'd said... --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 01:40, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Update: "This page, on the other hand, allows you to click on any of the importance or quality rating and be given links to all of them (though, as far as I can see, it's sadly impossible to pick both the importance and quality, so if you want to work on High-importance stubs, you'll need to search around for them)." All WikiProject using this system have been updated and you now can crossreference quality and importance (though it takes you outside of Wikipedia to do so). --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 15:29, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have a few Qs I was hoping to get help with:

  • what template should I use for adding references to articles? In real life, I am most familiar with APA style and want to use that if possible
  • what gallery template do you recommend?
  • what templates should I use to add "citation/source/reference is needed" to a claim I think doesn't make sense?

Thanks, --The.Filsouf (talk) 20:41, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To answer in order:
  • It depends on where the information comes from. For online content, the most common, it is {{cite web}}. The second most common (in the articles I edit, anyway) is {{cite journal}}. A full list can be found here. Let me know if you have any trouble with them.
  • Gallery template? I don't generally have much to do with pictures, but I can bludgeon problems better well. What context is it in? What article is it for?
  • If you need a citation for a specific statement, use {{citation needed|date=December 2009}}. If it's an entire article at issue rather than a sentence here or there, see here for the list of them. Again, if you have any trouble with them, simply ask. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 20:50, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation

Okay... about a month ago, I received a death threat. Nothing serious, just a random cretin shouting "You reverted my edit, I'll kill you, faggot!" with bad spelling. Nothing I haven't seen before. I deleted it and went back to removing more vandalism. A few days later, same thing. And again twice more. That's when I noticed something odd. None of the addresses were real. They were all just random strings of characters and they were all different from each other. I've seen it before, I know you can fake an e-mail address. An old friend once e-mailed me from "jameskirk@federationhq.co.milkyway." I've had spam mail from my own address. But I thought it was rather odd that someone was doing it just to send me crap like that when I didn't even know what I did or who it was. Then things got more complex. They started to say things that sounded very fishy and, after the third e-mail like that, I figured it out why I was suspicious. Somehow, they were finding out personal information about me. Forum posts from months ago, little snippets of my life. That's when I started responding. After a few days, I started to worry about how much they knew about me. Then they started to quote some things that even I had forgotten about and promised me that they knew more about me, including where I lived. They gave me a choice: retire from Wikipedia or they'd find me and kill my family.

I wasn't willing to take that chance so I retired...

That's why I retired. No more. Here and now, I'm stopping this. I know you're reading this, whoever you are, so I'm telling you, in public, to fuck off. I can't believe someone would be pathetic enough go to this length of shit to protect their right to vandalise a fucking encyclopaedia! All of your e-mails were deleted after their arrival. However, the next one you send me won't be. If you ever contact me again, I'll call in every one of the numerous favours I am owed. Fake e-mail address or not, I will track you down. And when I do, you're going to have a nice little chat with the police. If you ever come near me or my friends and family, I'll fucking disembowel you and hang you from a tree. I do not have to put up with this shit, so I won't. If you out me, I'll find you. If you threaten me, I'll find you. If you come near me or someone I love, I'll kill you. Are we clear? If I ever see you again... You failed. I will not retire because someone demands it. I will return later tonight. Anyone else who wants to fuck with me, this was your only warning as well. I will not tolerate this. You fuck with me, I fuck right back. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 21:17, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It's amazing how s--- brained some vandals can be.Abce2 (talk) 23:51, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey you shouldn't retire! Just because someone is making a threat doesn't mean they will act it out. Keep coming on wikipedia. I was just getting to know you! You can't let them control their life. In fact I think that person lives far away from you. Celebrities get this sort of thing all the time. Email the people who run the forum sites and ask them to blank out or remove your personal information. Its as simple as that. If they don't get in touch with the host company. I suspect this person may have known you if he revealed loads of personal information about you. If they didn't; its an empty threat. You can google anyone's name and obtain tidbits of info. When you get that sorted that then I'm sure this person will leave you alone. NarSakSasLee (talk) 00:03, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that this page isn't blanked any more is tantamount to the fact that I'm certainly not retiring. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 00:04, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would send this by email but this time it's not the email that's messed up it's the entire computer; so I still won't be able to email you for a while. But the main topic is this, if they do it again don't leave me out this time; I never leave friends on their own. So what I'm saying is simply if he does it again tell me and mes'll help you to find the messed up, cynically dysfunctional, social leaper, pathetic little fucker anyway I can (hopefully anywhy, there are several factors I will email you about). Even if it means trying to get the same guy who made both my computers hack-proof (don't know how, the rough jist of what I caught of all the technical jargon was 'seperating your *blah blah* from the main line but still enabling it to connect to the *blah blah* via a sub line that is *blah blah* meaning that only *blah blah* and *blah blah* files can get through which the latter can only be recognised and accepted by the computer as it is binary. But for safe measures I've put a *blah blah blahdidy blah* netting so any random hacker shit will simply get fake files...', yes that is all I could deciper; tough I would have to refind him as he left my school, I have his email somewhere though. I'll email you when possible but to keep in semi-continuatio of everyone else here, GO VANDAL' no wait that's not right, lets try that again shall we in a less retarded fashion GO ACE, you fight back like err... the rebels in star wars? I don't know, anyway, kick all morons arses (and if you can't I'll teach you how, 5 years of Muay Thai and BJJ as well as a trophy from the world championships of a Karate which I'd being doing for eight years have gotta count for something). You've been mentioned at WT:UAA

This is to notify you that I have mentioned you at WT:UAA. Agolib (talk) 00:37, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the comments made there, whilst they are blunt, they do have some merit. UAA does not really need "clerking", or a feedback process, as the noticeboard is for blatant violations only. Feel free to continue to watch the noticeboard to learn, but may I advise you dedicate your attention to another area which is more backlogged, such as Redirects for Discussion, Article Assessment at WikiProject Videogames, Peer Review, or even Wikiquette Alerts. Feel free to contact me if your interested in Article Assessment, as there is a large backlog there, as many "Stubs" are actually expanded without ever being updated. I can also advise on Redirects for Discussion if you so wish. Hope this helps, but remember these are only recommendations, you can do whatever you feel you can do. --Taelus (talk) 00:54, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On second thoughts, I decided to ask at WT:UAA for administrators opinions, as there aren't really any instructions or guidance on commenting at the noticeboard. Anyway, its no big deal, you contributed in good faith so that is what matters. Of course, the areas I mentioned could always use you anyway! --Taelus (talk) 01:31, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While I've largely "quit" the whole U/UAA scene (because I find the atmosphere caustic and largely in contravention to the "spirit" of Wikipedia; call me a softie if you will) I have enjoyed seeing your input there and hope you don't feel put off by this particular incident. It's about time we saw some input from a broader spectrum of users, including those who have not yet been granted the sysop bit. Thank you for your contributions there. Listen to what Sypheria told you. You're being rude, over-the-top and you should put new threads at the bottom of the page. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 03:47, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Listen to what you wrote on the IPs talk page - "Don't refactor other people's comments". Which was exactly how Sypheria caused the situation in the first place? Wiki policy on talk pages states "Never edit someone's comment to change its meaning". Considering that Wikipedia is generally not censored, and that many people resort to foul language (look up) do you really think that Sypherias role has been exemplary? Is there any reason why Sypheria should not also receive a warning template? From the IPs page - "If you continue to delete or edit legitimate talk page comments, as you did at Talk:Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2‎, you will be blocked for vandalism.". Does that not apply firstly to Sypheria? I think if Sypheria actually believed that the edit was vandalism they could have deleted it as such but altering someones comments to make them seem less like vandalism perhaps isn't the way to go? Cheers. Weakopedia (talk) 07:11, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, all Sypheria edited was the thread title. I've seen that happen all the time, from user talk pages, to article talk pages and even to (I believe) AN/I and no-one bats an eyelash. Personally, I feel that swearing is not something to be proud of and I try to do it as little as possible though sometimes, such as the above thread or when we first came across each other, my temper frays to the extent that I let out more than the odd "damn" or "bloody hell." However, just asking for the article to be unprotected could easily have been done without swearing about it. I probably would have done the same as Sypheria. If it had been part of the comment itself, then no, absolutely not. However, the thread title seems to be a bit of a gray area in terms of the policies I've encountered. I don't think Sypheria could have removed the thread, as someone else had already commented to that thread. If you wish to warn Sypheria, then go ahead. However, give a clear explanation as to why (or a link to this thread). --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 18:34, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Note to TJF: Removal of personal attacks is specifically not included in the general prohibition against editing others comments, although there is considerable disagreement about this, and the general consensus is to replace the attack with a <personal attack removed> note. Please see WP:RPA regarding this if you wish for more detail. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 18:54, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The problem in this case was a poorly worded talkpage topic rather than a personal attack. That wasn't the only problem, it was in the wrong place and the editor who made the section reverted it's move to the bottom a bunch, but it just made me wonder whether it was better to remove something suspected as vandalism or alter it to become non-vandalism. I find TJF to be a committed editor and I value his opinion on the matter. Weakopedia (talk) 03:25, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My comment was of a general nature regarding the policies, as TJF had stated "Wiki policy on talk pages states "Never edit someone's comment to change its meaning". " Not being certain whether TJF was aware of the possible exception, I mentioned it. My comment was not intended to be a remark on the current situation whatsoever. You may have missed it, but TJF did request I mentor and act in an advisory capacity, based upon another editors suggestion - and so I'll be butting in and making lots of comments such as this for a bit. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 01:53, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you inform Weakopedia I had responded to him, but omitted mentioning to me that I had been strongly accused - inaccurately, as it happens - by him? I would appreciate your clear answer to this conundrum. Thanks - KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 18:49, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) No one at Wikipedia has any obligation to do anything, everyone volunteers.
Obviously there are certain things that users aren't allowed to do, however, as far as I'm aware, there is nothing wrong with a user not doing something (please note: I make no comment on the whole Weakopedia incident, and am not even fully aware of what it was about). Kind regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 18:56, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't think badly of TheJadeFalcon, I am guessing he regretted even mentioning it to me as soon as he did so, but he is also a very thorough editor and may have (quite rightly) assumed that I had not marked the page for my watchlist and that you, being a much more experienced editor, would have done so. As to the 'The Weakopedia Incident' (cheers Spitfire ;]) I quite honestly believed you had told me to 'STFU' and if I was wrong about that as you have suggested I happily apologise for making that mistake. Regards. Weakopedia (talk) 02:54, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The entire discussion regarding language on that page was about an incident wherein TJF said "STFU", and I commented in thread, beginning with ""STFU" notwithstanding,... " I find it difficult to believe you thought I was speaking to you, rather than about the same darn thing the previous 20 or so posts had been talking about. If such is the case, it is a very odd case of you suddenly forgetting the topic at hand. However, if that is the case, allow me to suggest that you read more carefully and attempt to leap to confusions less often. Your apology is accepted. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 02:00, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you want something that is wrong if you don't do it is fill in a statment thing for certain incidents. And probably more but can't think of any right now (ie can't be bothered) 'The Ninjalemming'' 17:54, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, to whom are you speaking, and what do you mean? I cannot make sense of this. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 02:00, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what this discussion is about and I'm not meaning to intrude, but I do want you to know, KillerChihuahua that Jade Falcon is really a fine fellow and I've never known him to do harm to anyone. So if there's an issue where you think he may have done something against you, I'm confident it's all a misunderstanding all the way around. He's a most excellent vandal fighter and has the utmost respect for editors and admins alike. He's a great asset to wikipedia, as are you.Malke2010 02:11, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, there is no such situation. I have not criticized TJF for any action at all, ever. I have asked a question, with no criticism implied or intended. Depending upon the answer, I may or may not have advice for future situations. I have to say, this is the first time I've taken on mentoring of any kind to have a veritable mob of other editors rush to the mentoree's defense - unnecessarily, I might add, as I would not have agreed to this coaching had I not thought TJF had considerable potential and merit already. I trust that all the loyal talk page stalkers will now breathe a sigh of relief and calm themselves. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 12:56, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, this may be late but KillerChihuahua, I was addressing Spitfire not you; sorry. I do write in weird ways most of the time so not really understanding who it was to just made it worse. Sorry 'The Ninjalemming'' 17:01, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
KillerChihuahua, Yes, breathing and calm. Well said.Malke2010 17:07, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Re:Ninjalemming: Not late at all - thanks. I still have no idea what your post means, but as its not addressed to me, its not a problem. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 20:34, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
O.o This was a heck of thread to come back too... Anyway, moving on rapidly...
It's been too long for me to remember exactly why. However, after examining the time stamps, I've come to a few conclusions.
  • A) I assumed that since you hadn't responded to my own reply (which I was half-expecting you to do), I thought that you hadn't noticed the talkback yet (maybe due to not being online) and therefore decided not to create another one.
  • B) I assumed that you may have it on your watchlist after my response (unlikely, since I always assume that another person doesn't have it until it's confirmed that it is on there).
  • C) I regretted mentioning it to Weakopedia instantly, seeing how long the editor review got in the end and decided that, should he respond, I would just leave it there and hope the review died silently and without notice.
  • D) I'm an idiot and I simply forgot to place a second talkback.
All of those are plausible. Regardless, if you took any offence from it at all, I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 18:34, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No offense at all; it was a simple query to try and get a glimpse at how your mind works. I had no idea the world would descend and make a novel of it - I am sorry, it must have been daunting to see this thread when you returned.
I suggest that in the future, if you notify one person, whether you regret it or not, you should notify other parties. To do otherwise can have the appearance, however unintended, of selectivity - favoring one editor over another, or focusing attention on one and not the other. Please note this will occasionally happen regardless. All one can do is one's best. Also; if you think the discussion is spiraling out of control, you can always notify the second party and mention that; eg: "I am notifying you about blah. It seems to be spiraling a bit out of control, and I'm not sure if you'll want to participate, but as I had already notified EditorYadda, I felt it only fair to also notify you." This may work to head off complaints.
FYI, I am almost impossible to offend. If I am offended, I will say so, clearly - you will not be wondering if I'm offended. Hope this helps! KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 13:46, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, this is a message I hope all of my watchlisters will pick up on, regardless of who they are. Over my brief Wikibreak, where I just wanted to do some other stuff for a time, I ended up thinking on this subject considerably and how I react to it. I came to the conclusion that I am very lenient towards it and why I am like that. While I will still be lenient towards it and won't hand out instant warnings to new users, some of the people who appear here to be MySpacey have been around long enough to know better and I will be gradually cracking down on it more and more. From now on, all MySpacey edits will be reverted without discussion. You're all aware of my e-mail address, it's not like I keep it hidden. Use that if you just want to chat. If it continues, warnings will start to appear on your talk page, regardless of where I see the MySpacing, whether it's here or on another talk page. Thank you for reading and I hope everyone takes this into account. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 18:34, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Agree. Emails only from now on. And thanks for the edit to my talk page. I like my new clock.Malke2010 18:41, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
