== Error in graph ==

The pictorial graph showing Villa's league positions over the years has a significant error.

It shows the 1959-60 season as a first division season. In fact they were relegated in 59, so the graph should show them top fo div 2 in 1960 - it in fact shows them as div 1 champions!

The graph appears on a few pages - not just this one, Can someone put it right?

FA

This article has now been granted FA status, as part of this i have now "Archived" all the last disscusions as it was clogging this page up! (Everlast1910 16:45, 24 July 2007 (UTC))

Now that status has been achieved, I shall add a spoken version at some point in the next few weeks. Hassocks5489 11:32, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done - see link above. Hassocks5489 21:29, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Current squad

Can editors please not ignore the hidden text. it is there for a reason - to stop unreferenced edits. I am referring to "If changing REO-COKER OR HAREWOOD squad numbers please REFERENCE' it (Sky Sports, AVFC, BBC or other reputable sources)". Several editors are amending the squad numbers without referencing it. I understand that the speculation will be rife until August 11 and then August 31 but only edit this page if you have HARD FACTS. May i also remind editors of the other hidden text " When amending the current squad PLEASE REMEMBER to realign the "MID SQUAD" to avoid an uneven look. " Thankyou. Other pages requiring Villa info

Would some Villa fan who remembers the 1975 League Cup Final better than me (I was only 11 at the time!) like to augment the Match Review section. EddieCam 19:06, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good call - and the other Aston Villa finals need documenting too, 1977 in particular needs an entry, the first team to win the trophy 3 times. MegdalePlace 05:38, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zat Knight

it clearly states that zat knight is on loan from fulham, look just after his name and on the squad list on right hand side. follow the link... http://www.avfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Squad/Profiles/0,,10265~11316,00.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sjjames (talkcontribs) 23:03, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AVFC sometimes you have to wait for it to be updated also the site is going through a revamp and we will be getting a new site soon check these links:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/6966524.stm http://www.skysports.com/football/player/0,19754,11677_155047,00.html Everlast1910 07:29, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ok but surely AVFC site is more of a source than BBC and Sky Sports, i'm not saying that he is on loan because i believe it to be a permanent deal but this really is hard evidence, that's what this site relies on and well here it is, the best source for AVFC is surely their own site! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sjjames (talkcontribs) 10:34, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What the squad profile actually says is that he was loaned to Peterborough United F.C., not that he is on loan to Villa. (Note the placing of the commas, admittedly it is a poor layout). The best source for info is not neccessarily AVFC. We also need to have third party sources instead of just relying on what AVFC say. Yet i understand in this case, in terms of statistical data Villa would be the best place to start. Woodym555 11:51, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Club crest

Whilst it is informative to have information on the new crest, it is only of particular interest at the moment because it is current. In the fullness of time, the current design will be no more noteworthy than any of the others. What would be good in my view would be a history of the crest in its various forms over the years. This would require the use of images, but I believe would be more relvant overall. MegdalePlace 05:44, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at any other FA football article there is information on "colours and crest" or maybe just "crest" and "colours". While I understand your point the new crest in 10+ years time will still be relevant as it was one of the first acts Randy did at the club. But that is my opinion. Hajime Hosogai

Why is this person on villa's players list i've never heard of him and definatly no signing of him is this vandalism or has he been signed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonoridge (talkcontribs) 10:30, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That was vandalism and has been reverted now. Thanks. Woody (talk) 11:48, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Famous supporters

I have removed the re-addition of the famous supporters section because of concerns raised in the last peer review. It states Get rid of the "Famous supporters" section. A celebrity's support for Villa has no effect upon the club, if a person's support for Villa is truly notable it should be included in their article, not Villa's. This view has been backed up by consensus on the WP:FOOTY project where it was thought that this information should be included in the articles of the persons concerned, and not the main Aston Villa one. Thankyou for your contribution though. Woody (talk) 14:37, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

True Woody if you can find the old Diff I had it at the bottom with flag icons and all correctly ref'd and we removed it! :) Everlast1910 16:05, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I copied over the bulk of that text above from the one in the archive! ;) Lazy I know. Previous version is here Woody (talk) 16:10, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Its come on a long way! Everlast1910 17:36, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Revert and Civility issues

Will the anonymous IP address who is constantly reverting please stop and discuss your issues. The famous supporters issues is addressed in the section above me. Why do you object to the loan section and the foreign featured article link at the bottom. ({{Link FA|ro}}). Please DISCUSS your issues here in a calm and civil manner. Thankyou. Woody (talk) 00:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Managers

I've removed Joseph Venglos from the table of managers, as the table gives only those who won a trophy with Villa. "Dr Do little" didn't win anything, so doesn't belong there. If true that he was the first overseas manager at a major club, than this is note-worthy in itself, but should be elsewhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MegdalePlace (talkcontribs) 10:00, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Venglos was the first forgien coach in the premiership and for villa thus is notable and falls within the criteria. Everlast1910 11:13, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The editor does have a point though. The text above the table reads "The following managers have all won at least one trophy when in charge of Aston Villa:". If Venglos didn't, then the wording needs changing to something that justifies his inclusion. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:54, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, have amended accordingly. Thanks. Woody (talk) 12:12, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes i have just realised that! Opps :) Everlast1910 12:13, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Colours, crest and kit design

I was led to believe that Arsenal copied our kit design when Herbert Chapman was in charge (ie plain shirts with lighter sleeves). I am sure I read it either on here or the Arsenal page but now can't find it anywhere. Has anybody got a link to prove this to be the case? While we're at it has anybody got a link to confirm Barca copied their colours off us? Would be much appreciated, thanks. Villafancd (talk) 10:42, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that Arsenal's kit came from borrowing Nottingham Forest shirts and adding white sleeves. JSL595 (talk) 17:09, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heart of Midlothian and Rangers are said to be the origins of the claret and blue colours. If anyone can find an encyclopedically acceptable reference to it it would answer a question in the article 00:27, 24 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.40.215.245 (talk)

Shirt sponsors

I have removed the shirt sponsors and manufacturers section as it adds nothing to this article, the main article on the club. In the history of the club, the shirt sponsor has little relevance. If it needs to exist anywhere, which I doubt, then add it to the Aston Villa F.C. statistics and records article. As it stood, it was incomplete and without references, which all articles need, especially featured articles. Please stop reverting and discuss its inclusion here per Bold, revert, discuss Woody (talk) 18:11, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

it was complete, the list carried all of Aston Villa's Sponsors and kit manufactures that ther has been, if it adds nothing to the article why have other teams pages got the same information?? Mrengland (talk) 20:35, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody keeps making changes to the Aston Villa squad. This includes adding players from the youth/Reserve teams that have not been officially confirmed as first team players and also adding squad numbers when non as yet been assigned. The latest edit of this squad is based on the squad as featured on avfc.co.uk, the clubs official website. May I suggest that any changes made to the squad should reference articles or link to, the official website. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RLoffman (talkcontribs) 15:38, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Intertoto Cup (season 2008-2009)

I have just been checking through the honours for Aston Villa and noticed that it shows we have only won the intertoto cup once (2001). This season Aston Villa are now in the UEFA Cup first qualifying round after winning the intertoto cup stage. Shouldn't this now be displayed like the 2001 achievement? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.36.115.86 (talk) 13:51, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since (I think) 2006, all you get for progressing through the Intertoto rounds is qualification for the UEFA Cup. In 2001, only three teams went through to the UEFA Cup so they counted all three as "winners"; see UEFA Intertoto Cup 2001. But now there are eleven, so they changed it such that the winner of the Intertoto Cup is the club which progresses furthest in the UEFA Cup having qualified via the Intertoto; see UEFA Intertoto Cup 2008. So Villa haven't won it yet, but they might if they do well enough in the UEFA Cup. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:01, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proximity of West Midlands rivals

"They have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with local rivals Birmingham City, although West Bromwich Albion is actually the closest professional football club." There's no citation given for this, and if anything I'd have said Villa are marginally closer to Blues than to Albion. Given that it's a relatively close call, a measure should also be given - is it by road, as the crow flies etc? Driving directions generated by entering the clubs' postcodes into Google Maps gives 3.2 or 3.3 miles between Blues and Villa, and 3.7 miles between Villa and Albion. --Jameboy (talk) 14:53, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will try and dig out the programmes from when Villa shared the Hawthornes. As I remember, there were various reports and articles stating that the clubs were closer than Blues/Villa. I will try and find a ref for it. Regards. Woody (talk) 17:20, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to add that either way (by car or as the crow flys) that statement contradicts google maps satellite view. Thanks. 78.32.178.161 (talk) 22:21, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Fourth most successful"

I have rephrased this statement to reveal that they have won the fourth largest number of trophies by an English club. Describing success solely on a quantitative basis is a POV. Going by this approach, a team winning both the Premier League and Champions League five times would be deemed as "successful" as another team winning the League Cup ten times. Here we can see that stating which trophies have been won reveals more than a total number would. Solely describing the number of trophies won, without qualifying it as "success", leaves the reader to draw their own conclusions. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 12:36, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In Popular Culture

In popular culture In the first episode of Yes Minister Jim Hacker MP says he needs to get off early to watch Aston Villa play. However, in a later episode, he launches a campaign to save his local team, the fictional "Aston Wanderers".

I've always thought this to be a clever reference to The Wolves rather than Villa. In 1982, Wolves had been just minutes away from bankruptcy (like Aston Wanderers in the show) when saved by The Bhatti Brothers consortium headed by Derek Dougan. By calling it Aston, the writers ingeniously set the club in the West Midlands, and by adding Wanderers, left no doubt (in my mind at least) who they were refering to.

The Peace Cup is not a notable enough tournament to list it under the club honours section on this page. This page lists the major European and national honours that Villa have won. It does not include invitational and minor tournaments such as the Peace Cup. Otherwise it would have to list all 19 Birmingham Senior Cup victories et. al. which would end up devaluing, in terms of space used and emphasis used, the other more important tournaments listed. Woody (talk) 23:10, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Squad numbers

Further to the hidden comments in the current squad section, please do not make changes to the squad numbers without an official source. Wikipedia should only list verifiable information. At the moment there is no announcement and the official squad list is not showing any changes. The numbers used against Fiorentina are not neccessarily the normal squad numbers as pre-season friendlies often use different numbers. Please wait for the official release or add a means to verify the information, otherwise it will be removed. Regards, Woody (talk) 17:37, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen O'Halloran

Note: I have opened up a discussion about Stephen O'Halloran and whether he should be included in the squad list over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Stephen O'Halloran: grey area. Summary:

  • His contract has expired
  • The 2009–10 press release from Villa about squad numbers omitted him ("Squad Numbers 2009-10". Aston Villa F.C. Retrieved 2009-09-02.)
  • The UEFA squad list omitted him ("Aston Villa FC". UEFA. Retrieved 2009-09-02.)
  • The Aston Villa main squad list though does still list him and that is generally what is used to determine the squad list and squad numbers.("Squad list". Aston Villa F.C. Retrieved 2009-08-20.)

All discussion over at FOOTY would be most welcome. Regards, Woody (talk) 10:22, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Intertoto cup last season

We definitely did not win the Intertoto cup, that was Braga. We only qualified through the competition for the UEFA cup! 88.106.55.233 (talk) 09:51, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What is Villa Park's Capacity???

I've started a little discussion on this here. The official stats say one figure (42,783) but the official attendance at Villa -v- Man Utd was 42,788, confirmed by both BBC Sport and Sky Sports, Willdow (Talk) 15:22, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
