"Broken-Hearted Girl"
Song
B-side"Poison"
"Video Phone" (Remix, featuring Lady Gaga)

"Broken-Hearted Girl" is a song by American R&B recording artist, Beyoncé Knowles. It is the seventh single released from her third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. It was written by Knowles, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen. It was also produced by Knowles alongside Stargate.

Release

'Broken-Hearted Girl' " was originally lined up as the sixth US/fourth worldwide single from the album, but was replaced by "Sweet Dreams".[citation needed] In July 2009, it was confirmed on Beyoncé's official website that it was to be released as the seventh U.S. single from the album and fifth single for international markets.[1] It was later cancelled for a U.S. release, and was replaced with "Video Phone" as the seventh U.S. single.

The single was released physically in Australia on August 28, 2009.[2][3] The song was released in the UK on November 2, 2009, the same time as the Platinum edition was released.[4]

Critical reception

Pop Matters said that "The piano-balladry of “Broken-Hearted Girl” is simply more Celine Dion than Aretha Franklin".[5] Village Voice called the song "romantic-comedy soundtrack fare".[6]

Music video

A video for the single was released on June 16, 2009 on the Above and Beyoncé - Video Collection & Dance Mixes.[7] The video was directed by Sophie Muller who also directed "Déjà Vu" and "Ring The Alarm" for Beyoncé. Its UK premiere was on September 19, 2009 on 4Music at 11:00am[8] with it showing on every other music channel from 11:30am.

Reminiscent of Herb Ritts iconic videos from the 80's "Cherish" by Madonna and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" by Janet Jackson. It shows Beyoncé in a car crying after having an argument with the man. She is then shown walking to the beach from the car. Scenes are shown with Beyoncé with her love interest playing around on the beach, which seem to be recalled events that Beyoncé is thinking while in the car. Beyoncé then walks on the beach for a while then in the water with teary eyes singing into the camera. While in the car she imagines holding hands with her love interest while it goes back to her in the water. The remaining scenes are shown in color, where she is in a green dress with a rose than starts to go backwards and repair the rose, placing all the petals back and even walking backwards. Beyoncé is shown again playing around with her love interest before the music video ends with Beyoncé wiping the tears from her face, smiling, and drives away.
