Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah | तारक मेहता का उल्टा चश्मा | is a super hit comedy serial that airs on SAB TV since 28 July 2008 which airs from monday - thursday 8.30pm IST The show is produced by Neela Telefilms and the series writers are Raju Odedra and Rajen Upadhyay. It is based on the column Taarak Na Undha Chasma written by Indian columnist and journalist Taarak Mehta. The television series bears various issues faced by the nation and these concepts are very well shown through comedic sarcasm. Sometime moral values are also advocated. Example of these issues are "Dependence of Indian Housewives on Domestic Help", "Popularity Of Cricket In India", "Thinking Of Husbands", "Significance of Literate person in the society" etc.

The serial completed its 200th episode on July 28, 2009. The show celebrated a TAARAK MEHTA KA OOLTAH CHASHMAH WEEK for 200 episodes airing each day a one-hour special episode from 27-31 July 2009. The show completed its 300th episode on 18 January 2010.

The common methods used to generate the satire in this serial are:

• Daya's habit of coming in the balcony and saying things to Jethalal (to unintentionally embarrass him) when he is on the compound on his way to his shop. Example,

The Mehta Family

Taarak Mehta=

He is a journalist and a good friend of Jethalal. He is always hungry because his wife,Anjali(ATM) keeps him on a diet of salads and boiled food. He is the main protagonist and usually ends the show with a speech.

She is the wife of Taarak Mehta. She is a well educated woman who is a dietician by profession.

Gada's family

This is the Gujarati family consisting of Jethalal Gada (Husband), Daya Gada (Wife), Tipendra (Tappu) Gada (Son), Champaklal Gada (Grandfather) and Sundar, Daya's brother (Saala).

Jethalal Gada

He is a Gujarati Businessman who always wants to flirt with Babita. He always has fights with Aatmaram Tukkaram Bhide. He is afraid of his father Champaklal Gada.He owns the store "Gada Electronics".

Daya Gada

She is the wife of Jethalal Gada. She believes in creating something useful out of the waste and thus experiments extensively persuing this habit. She controls Jethalal's diet by giving him "Churan" (a powder for the digestion of food). She is the leading character of the show. She unknowingly insults Jethalal in front of others. She is very good at doing 'Garba' and almost hurts nearby people by doing it.

Tipendra (Tappu)

Tapu is the son of Jethalal and Daya Gada and is the head member of "Tappu Sena". He is very notorious and is not a good student. He likes Sonu, the daughter of Bhide and he is an influential person. He always gets the support of his grandfather, Champaklal Gada. He is somewhat mad at doing fun and plays pranks a lot. Bhide does not like this mad, brainless, senseless Tapu.

Champaklal Gada

He is the Father of Jethalal Gada and he always gets angry with Jethalal's behaviour.

Sundar

He is the only brother of Daya Gada. He is a very irritating person to Jethalal.

Bhide's family

This is the Maharashtrian Family, Consisting of Aatamaram (Husband), Madhavi (wife), Sonu (daughter)

Aatmaram Tukkaram Bhide

He is the secretary of the society & he is a tutor & runs a tutorial called Bhide Tution Classes in his home. He is very stern by nature and he always leads a simple and honest life. He ensures that he saves every single paise whenever he can, which shows that he understands the importance of money, this habit of his is laughed by many. In one of the episodes it becomes a reason for quarrel between Daya Gada and Madhavi Bhide.

Bhide lives by the basic virtues in which he believes. He loves his wife and ensures that he listens to whatever she says.

His relations with Jethalal are not quite good. Bhide hates the naughty behaviour of Tapu and he wants his daughter to stay away from him.

Madhavi

She is the wife of Bhide & makes papad and Achar and supplies them in the society.

Sonu

The only daughter of 'Mr. Bhide',she is a very sweet child who is not only well mannered but cultured as well. She is an intelligent and systematic girl. She goes to school on time, attends all her classes, comes back home, plays for a little while, does her homework, prepares her bag for the next day, prays to God and goes to sleep. Unfortunately her father's insecurities irritate the little girl.Though Tapu and she argue a lot they get along equally well. Mr. Bhide's constant effort that she ties Tapu a Rakhi goes down the drain.She is indulged with good habbits.She is the only girl in the Tapu Sena.

Iyer's family

Consisting of Mr.Iyer (Husband) & Babita Iyer (wife)

Krishnan Iyer

He is a scientist from Tamilnadu. He doesn't like Jethalal because Jethalal always tries to flirt with his wife Babita who happens to be the most beautiful and stylish woman in their society.

Babita

Wife of Krishnan Iyer, She's a Bengali & from Kolkata. She works as an A- GRADE' junior artist.Jethalal always tries to flirt with her everytime. She is very good looking. Jethalal gives more respect to her than any other woman in the society.

Sodhi's family

This is the Punjabi-Parsi family.

Mr. Roshan Singh Sodhi

He is a Punjabi garage owner and a drunkard .He owns a transport business and also runs a Mandap Decorators service as an ancillary business to support his wife. Mr. Sodhi is a very short tempered and aggressive man. He hates 'Tapu' for breaking the glass of his window unlimited number of times. He is also one of the wealthiest in the society but still does not show his ego and is very helpful and jolly.

Mrs. Roshan Sodhi

A Parsi lady married to a Sardar defines Roshan who also shares her name with her husband. She is a sweetheart and very co-operative. She innocently commits a mistake but never realizes it which turns into a funny light moment. Both Sodhi and Roshan always have communication issues because of the language barrier.

Gogi

Son of Mr. & Mrs.Sodhi. He is also the youngest member of the "Tapu Sena".

Dr.Hathi's Family

This is the family from Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. Hansraj Hathi

Dr. Hansraj Hathi is a doctor who weighs 250 kgs, and is very fond of eating.He also keeps falling off to sleep in the middle of conversations. All the society's residents go to him for medication. Most of the time he uses the dialogue 'sahi baat hai' (Translated: That's right.) But the funny part is, he keeps saying that to everyone even with conflicting views. He is a very good doctor. Whenever he compares stuff, he uses food as his examples.

Komal

She is wife of Dr. Hathi. Dr. Hathi and Komal share a very lovely relationship. She never gets angry at any food request and prepares it with love, similarly Dr. Hathi never gets angry with Komal and allows her to take part in the societie's activities.

Goli

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Hathi . He is the heaviest member of tapusena. He always want to eat lots of food like his father.He is fond of eating and always begs for food.He's drawing is very nice but he makes drawing of food.

Miscellaneous characters

Abdul (Hindi: अब्दुल)

He has a small shop near the gate of the society, is also a familiar figure in the society. In the evening, all the male of the society gather at Abdul's Shop to drink soda.

'Matkaa-King' Mohanlal(Hindi: मटका-किंग मोहनलाल)

He is the kingpin on illegal gambling activity, and hence referred as 'Matka' king by other characters.

'Patrakaar' Popatlal(Hindi:पत्रकार पोपटलाल )

He is a reporter who came back from Bhopal City to Mumbai. He is a single man & always carries an umbrellawith him. He is very thin, but always in mood to pick up fight with everyone. His repeatedly uses a dialogue "Main Duniya Hila Dunga" (Translated: I'll shake the world.) and also a word "Cancel kardo" (Translated: Cancel this work) . He works for the newspaper "Toofan Express". Popatlal irritates everyone and that is why everyone ignores him.

Kerry

She played a brief role of a foreign tourist who met Jethalal when he visited London. While spending time with Gada family, Kerry (played by American Kari Irwin) starts loving the Indian culture and stay there with the family from Navratri to Diwali. The family also goes to Ahmadabad with Kerry to celebrate Navratri, during this time, Patrakaar Popotalal falls in love with her, and tries to get married. But later it is revealed that Kerry was already in love with another man named Nilesh. After knowing this Popatlal helps them get married.

Rita Reporter

Rita reporter in the society is a journalist of a channel "Kal Tak" . Any problem in the society, Rita reporter is there to take a report on it and telecast it live world wide. She always harasses every one by reporting the society's problems to the whole world.

Pinku

Pinku is a member of Tappu Sena. But the TV show never shows his parents. In Parent-teachers' meeting, Anjali Mehta had to come as his guarding, since his parents were absent. However its never disclosed during the story, why his parents are absent, so two assumptions can be made

• both are working parents and leave home early.
• both parents are abroad, and Pinku stays in India.

Nattu Kaka(Hindi: नटु-काका)

Nattu Kaka is the manager of Jethalal's electronic store, which is called "Gada Electronics". He is a very talkative person and Jethalal doesn't like him. Most of the time he tells Jethalal to increase his salary, but of no avail. Inspite he is working in the store he many times takes decision on his own which Jethalal does not like. Nattu Kaka many times uses the fear of Bapuji to convince Jethalal for many tasks. Sometimes even Sundar gets his work through Nattu kaka which increases expenditure of Jethalal and Jethalal doesn't like this.

• In the recent episode, its shown the Nattu Kaka used to live in Unaai town of Gujarat state and used to work as a female actress in 'Bhawai' (a form of traditional dance and drama in Gujarat state of India.)
• His wife stays in Ahmedabad, while he works in Mumbai. That's why he has to goto a Bhojnaalay (भोजनालय-dining house) everyday to get his meals.

Bakaa(Hindi:-बका )

• He is a friend of Sundar (who is the Brother in law of Jethalal)
• Bakaa refers Jethalal as 'Party'
• He is always shown eating paan-masala.
• When Jethalal's family visited Ahmedabad, Sundar had given the task of arranging the return train-tickets to Bakaa, but he forgot it, and due to that, Jethalal's family was forced to come back to Mumbai via Taxi. But Mr. Champaklal suffered backpain due to long taxi travel and he got angry to Jethalal. (a routine strategy to generate humor, because Jethalal's father always blames him even for the mistakes by other people.)
• In the Holy episode Bakaa is shown dancing like Rajesh Khanna who was a famous actor in old times in Bollywood.
• Bakaa also gets to color Babita during the Holy celebration while Jethalal is forced to watch it from the balcony and this greatly enrages Jethalal.

• During the 'IPL Match visit' episdoe, He promises Jethalal to give IPL cricket Match tickets.
• But he never said that he'll give it for free, hence his man, later asks Jethalal to give Rs.33,000/- for 11 tickets.

• In 'the Saree Sale' episode, he sells defective sarees to the ladies of Gokuldham society.

Episodes

Picnic At Tikuji ni Vaadi

• All the women, children and Champaklal went to picnic at Tikuji ni Vaadi.
• All the male members remained at home (because earlier they had said NO to picnic to their wives.)
• In the Picnic, Gogi (Son of Mr. and Mrs. Roshan Singh Sodhi) fell asleep in a bench and there was chaos because everyone thought he went missing.
• This prompted all the male members to quickly reach the spot, only to find out that everything was well and fine.

Navratri in Ahemdabad

• Some of the female & some of the male members of Gokuldham Society had gone to Ahmedabad to enjoy the Navratri festival.

Gogi goes Missing

• Rita Reporter gives all the children of Tappu Sena a chance to appear in the a TV Commercial called 'Choco Day'
• During the auditions all the members of Tappu sena gets selected (Except Gogi, son of Sodhi).
• Because of this Gogi is upset, because he couldn't appear on TV like his friends.
• To cheer him up, Tappu makes a plan, that they'll hide Gogi in the empty apartment (where Kerry used to live earlier) and then Rita Reporter will telecast the report of missing Gogi on the news channels and thus Gogi will apper on the TV channel just like his friends!
• Finally, Champaklal discovers their plan and exposes them all in front of society and they're punished. After that the director of 'choco day' calls Rita Reporter. She then tells him that the TV ad director has an add for a sardar and asks him whether Gogi can do that ad and the reply answer goes 'yes'. Everyone gets happy.

Swimming with Babita

• Babita joins as a swimming coach for Silver club.
• She also gets other women of the society to join the club to learn swimming.
• Jethalal also wants to learn Swimming from Babita but he can't, as Babita teaches only during 1 to 3 pm. At the club and during that time men are not allowed.
• However Jethalal infiltrates the club posing as a waiter. but ultimately he is busted when he tries to catch a peeping tom taking photos of ladies inside the swimming pool. Jethalal tries to grab him, but the bad guy throws him in the pool, so Jethalal's fake beard is washed off and Babita and other members find that it was Jethalal as the waiter.
• However Jethalal saves his reputation by claiming that he deliberately had infiltrated the club posing as a waiter because he knew about that peeping tom's activity.
• This episode ends with Bhide announcing to every member of Golkuldham Society that Jethalal will be given a bravery award on 26th January 2010. i.e गो.वी.पू - गोकुल्धाम विरस्ता पुरस्कार

Makar Sankranti in Ahmedabad

• Daya's mother had called the whole Gada family to celebrate Makar Sankranti in Ahmedabad.
• The whole Gada Family goes to Ahmedabad for this purpose. But then they come to know that Daya's mother is in Allahabad!!

Laughter Club by Taarak Mehta

• To make everyone relax Taarak Mehta opens a laughter club in the society.
• Members of the society laugh as loudly as possible.
• While laughing, Dr. Hansraj Haathi goes ill and each and every moment he just laughs.
• This laughter of Dr.Hansraj Haathi creates a bang in the society.
• Each and every member tries to solve this great problem but don't succeed.
• Later Taarak Mehta thinks for a plan which works out and Dr.Hansraj Haathi's laughter STOPS.
• Later the gents come to know the laughter was not because of club they had started, it was due to alcohol (bhaang) in a sweet (mithai) eaten by Dr.Hansraj Haathi.

Finding of RED CHERRY 8400

• Once Jethalal brought a phone for Babita, which was a good model of a Red Cherry 8400 which cost Rs.27000 at home. Later due to some mistakes of Jethalal's Bapuji Champaklal the phone was kept by him in Sundar's bag and no one knew about it.
• Jethalal comes to know about the phone missing in the house while Sundar goes to Banglore with his bag.
• Jethalal tells Daya that Sundar might have taken the phone and claims that he is a thief.
• Daya gets angry and gives Jethalal a warning that if the phone is found from Sundar's bag then she will break relation with her brother and if not then she will break relation with Jethalal.
• Later after lot of drama taking place with Taarak Mehta solving the case was closed with the phone found in Sundar's bag.
• But when Bapuji Champaklal returned he explained about his mistake and the case was solved.

Gokuldham Premier League(GPL)

• Conflict between Aatmaram Tukkaram Bhide and Jethalal Champaklal Gada made them to play a match of cricket between themselves.
• Like IPL there were members of the society to play for Jethalal and Bhide which included women also.
• In Bhide's team Tappu, Daya, Gajraj Hathi (brother of Hansraj Hathi), Mrs Roshan Singh Sodhi, Krishnan Iyer, Patrakar Popatlal, Anjali Taarak Mehta, Pinku and Gogi were there. Mohanlal was franchisee of Bindass Bhide (name of Bhide's team).
• In Jethalal's team Sonu, Madhavi Bhide, Mr. Roshan Singh Sodhi, Sehwag, Manhohar bhabi (wife of Gajraj Hathi),Goli,Monty (son of Gajraj Hathi and cousin of Goli Hathi), Abdul and Nattu Kaka were there.Babita was franchisee of Jabardast Jetha(name of Jethalal's team).
• The lossing captain will clean the society compound with the broom as per the condition set by both the captains.
• Finally the cricket match ended in a tie (because Police came and asked them to stop playing, because of the Supreme court's guideline on late night events after 11PM. ) and both the captains cleaned the compound with the broom.

Valentine's Day

• The male members of the society were gossiping about their respective wives.
• None of the couple were talking to each other due to this problem.
• Meanwhile, the TAPPU SENA comes to know this and plan for a program which would solve all the problem.
• They decide to plan a "SHANTI HAWAN" which would clear all the problem.
• This works and all the problems between the couple gets solved.
• In the evening there's a special VALENTINE's DAY program...and surprise guests - Sharman Joshi and Vatsal Sheth.
• All dance to the beats and end the program by enjoying it greatly.

HOLI

• Jethalal was going to MahaBaleshwar to celebrate Holi with Babita.
• Iyer lies to Daya that he and Babita are going to MahaBaleshwar.
• Before Jethalal and his family were leaving for MahaBaleshwar Jethalal saw that Babita and Iyer were not going to MahaBaleshwar.
• Jethalal then lies that he is unfit and they cancel their trip.
• Then Jethalal cannot celebrate Holi with Babita as he was ill and was advised bed rest for 2-3 days.
• And adding insult to the injury, even Sundar's friend 'Bakaa' is also shown putting color on the face of Babita during the Holi celebration while Jethalal is forced to watch it from the balcony because Daya had locked the door from the other side to prevent him from playing Holi.
• Later when Jethalal escapes from the house, Bhide told that it was 1 PM which meant that Holi had to be finished till that time but increased by half an hour more due to Jethalal's plight that he did not play Holi.

Tempo At the Society Gates.

• Earlier during a night, Mr. Champaklal (Jethalal's father) spotted a suspicious person loitering around the society, hence he warned everyone.
• This prompted Mr. Bhide (Who also happens to be the Secretary of the society) to install barbwires in the compound wall.
• But on the next morning, when everyone woke up, to their surpize, a Tempo (one type of small truck) had crashed into the gate of the society and had completely blocked the path. So that no one could get in the society and no one could go out.

However the members of the society deviced tricks, like Tapu Sena (kids of Society) used the nearby tree's branches to climb down.

• But while transporting Mr. Mehta using a portable-stairs above the compoundwall, Mr. Iyyer got hurt (it was later claimed that he actually broke his leg.)
• After this a doctor was called, and he was transported above the compoundwall via a tyre-swinging method deviced by Daya.
• After a while, Abdul inspected the tempo and found guns and granedes in it, but later police came and concluded that they were fake (perheps used for film production)
• After this, the original tempo owner came, and said that he had crashed the tempo because he was drunk last night.
• Although society members wanted to take him to the police, but Mr. Champaklal asked them to forgive him, since he said he'd never drink again and has a family to feed.

Thief on water saving mission

• after the previous 'tempo stuck at gates' episode, Tarak Mehta came back at night and saw that a suspicious person was climbing the wall, he called everyone.
• They caught the thief but it turned out that he wanted to shut down the main pipeline of the society's overhead water tank so that next day, people would understand the value of water and will think twice before wasting it.

Exam Stress & Parent- Teacher Meeting

• All the parents of GokulDham Society were called in the school for PT Meeting.
• Sodhi had brought his jeep to carry everyone to school.
• But the tyre of the jeep got flat, and it took a lot time to get it repaired.
• Thus the parents went late to the meeting and the Principal told the Tapu-Sena members that they won't be allowed to sit in the Exam if their parents didn't come in 10 minutes.
• But after request from Tarak Mehta, the Principal starts the meeting and forgives them for coming late.
• Interestinly, during the meeting all the students from Tapu Sena get positive review by teachers except Sonu, who is otherwise a very brilliant student.
• The teachers warn Mr. Bhide that his daughter Sonu (who otherwise gets 1st rank in all exams) is not doing well.
• This makes Bhide very angry, and he scolds his daughter.
• Later Sonu goes missing and everyone assumes that she ran away from home due to Bhide's harsh words, but in reality she had gone to her friend's house for subject-revision before the exam.

Gokuldham Society wants to see IPL in stadium

• Upon request of Babitaji Jethalal arranges 11 tickets for the IPL match between Mumbai Indians & Kolkata Knightriders. At the fag end of their plan, all women start withdrawing their interest to witness the matches stating their children's examination as reasons. But Popat insists on his ticket, which enrages everyone. Finally their plan to visit an IPL match gets abandoned (without anyone knowing that Jethalal has not received the ticket)
• and adding insult to the injury, Jethalal is asked to pay 33,000 Rs. for the tickets by the agent of Mr.Nikhilbhai afterward.
• during this story thread, when everyone cancels the stadium event, Jethalal and other male members of the society decide to have a 'party' (drinking wine) at Taarak Mehta's home since his wife Anjali had gone to visit a relative.
• But when these members come goto Mehta's home after buying the liquor bottles from nearby store, they are surprised to see that Jetha's dad Mr. Champak is already present. and this makes them scarred and embarrassed as Champak against liquor consumption.
• However they manage to hide the bottle (wrapped in a black polythene bag) , by saying that, there is only cold-drink in it, and Mehta goes to kitchen with the bottle and brings cold-drink from another bottle from the fridge.
• But what did Mehta do to the liquor bottle afterward, did he throw it? or did he give it to Sodhi (who is a drunkard) , is not disclosed in the story.

The Saree Sale

• While Jethalal is busy on mobile phone, Daya wraps a saree (traditional indian women's costume) around his body. and Jethalal then goes to drawing room only to be discovered by Champaklal and Babita (who had came there to take address of Daya's tailor.) This greatly embarrses Jethalal especially since his secret love Babita saw him in women's garments.
• Later, Anjali's friend tells her that a Saree sale is held in Mumbai, where Sarees worth 20 thousand Rupees are sold for merely 2000 Rupees.
• Anjali distributes this news to all the ladies of Gokuladham Society, who then decide to visit the sale, on the same day at 4 PM.
• although all other ladies manage to get the permission and money from their husbands, Daya isn't so lucky, since she already got Jethalal embarrassed in front Babita during that Saree wrapping scene. So Jethalal denies permission to Daya for visiting that sale.

Anti-Tobacco Campaign

Once all the members of Gokuldham Society went for Anti-Tobacco campaign, where Daya stops one young man from eating Gutkha saying that his fiancee will dump him because of his stinking mouth and even if she marries him, she'll become a widow.

Anti-Liquor / Prohibition

Mr. Sodhi is likes to drink wines whenever he gets the opprotunity . but once when he comes home drunk, his wife locks the door from inside and doesn't let him in. This forces Sodhi to give a suicide thread, but finally he feels sorry for everything and promises not to do such activity again.

31st December and Liquor Party.

For celebrating 31st December (end of the year) party, the male members of Gokuldham society had decided that they'll go to some posh hotel and drink wine. But the women of the society along with Sunderlal played a trick and told them that we'll serve the liquor here in the society on that night. But instead, they gave those males, only ice-tea. This enraged Mr. Jetha and Sodhi, but Mehta gave them a lesson that the women were right and 31st December is not about drinking, its all about celebrating with the family.

Real Taarak Mehta (Original author)'s view on prohibition

• In one of the articles written by Original author (real) Taarak Mehta in Gujarati newspaper Divyabhaskar's Sunday edition's column named 'Bawaa no bagicho' (बावा नो बगीचों), Taarak Mehta had wrote that while he was in Mumbai during his days while working in drama theatres & as a reporter, he once had visited an illegal bar along with friends and had consumed liquor (while there was prohibition in Mumbai during Morarji Desai's rule.) but afterward he had stopped drinking.

Child-Marriage

In one of the episodes, Mr. Champaklal wants to get his grandson Tappu married in the child age so that he doesn't elope with some girl and bring dishonor to the family in future. Things take a turn for the worse, when a friend of Champaklal even agrees to marry his daughter to Tappu (actually he taught that Tappu was an adult.) in the end, that girl (who is 18+ year old) says that she is ready to marry with Tappu as atleast she is mature and can take care of him. This prompts a heart change in Mr. Champaklal and he admits his mistake that Child marriage is wrong.
