The Mullagori (also Malagori)(In Pashto ملاكوري) are a Pashtun tribe that inhabit the Khyber Agency, one of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan.

Origins

The Mullagoris are believed to be one of the tribes descended from Muhammad of Ghor. They are mainly settled just north of the Khyber Pass during the times when Islam was brought to South Asia. The other areas in which the Mullagoris inhabits are Munda (Near Shabqadar), Harichand (Charsadda)and in Peshawar near Shah Qabul areas of Dabgari and on Dalazak Road. They themselves follow the tradition that when Mohammad of Ghor was killed by the enemies some of his family members came to the hills of Tatara of Khyber Agency and laid the foundation of a village named Bara Dara. They fell safe there, because at that time there were forest on the hills and enemies could not find them another reason of the selection of that area was that in these forests there were wild fruits and vegetables which were sufficient for their survival. About the name of MULLAGORI is also historical facts. The word MULLA means religious leader and the word GORI came from the word GHORI which itself came from the name of MOHAMMAD OF GHOR ( SHAHAB U DIN GHORI) in colonial government because BRITISH can not speak GHORI so in governmental records the word change from GHORI to GORI. However about their origin JW Spain states in his book "The Pathan Borderland" to be the descendants of the Mulla Ghor, son of Ba-Yazid Ansari, the Pir Rokhan of the Pakhtuns, and Pir Tarik of the Mughals. The great Pakhtun historians like Bahadur Shah Zafar Kaka Khel(in his book Pukhtana da Tarikh pa Ranra key. Pashtu) are of the opinion that Mullagoris are actually a section of the Mohmand Tribe. In the earlier times they were having the hold of the extensive areas. But due to their internal disputes and disunity their areas were occupied by Afridis from Ghundi side, and by Arbabs from Shah gai Bazar, Sufaid Sang, Kafur Dehri, and warsak side, by Sheen saris near Warsak Dam and Ragha Baba, and by Khans (who are aliens and belong to Afghanistan) near Nehr Ghara.

Sub-Tribes

The forefather of the Mullagori was said to have had four sons. Each of these sons went on to progenate a sub-section of the Mullagori tribe. The four sub-tribes are:

  • Pahar Khel
  • Taar Khel
  • Daulat Khel
  • Ahmad Khel

Taar Khels are the 50% of the total population of the Mullagoris living in Khyber Agency. They are the most educated and having the occupation of the influential jobs, while Pahar Khel are dominant in the affairs of their tribe.

The Mullagori tribespeople inhabit two main areas: the Khakata Mena (or lower area) and Lowarha Mena (or upper area). The ‘Tatara’ hill, a famous resort for tourists, separates the Mullagori tribepeople from the Afridis, while the Kabul River separates them from the Mohmand tribe.

There are considerable number of Mullagori families residing in Mohmand Agency, other side of the River Kabul.

Visiting Spots

most of mullagori area has dry hills with only wild grass and local fruit trees of Gurgure. But it donont means that there are no picnic spots in mullagori area. Tatara is famous picnic spot from the coloniel era. it is a small village of 1000 to 1500 masses with beautiful green hills, water springs and cold weather during summer. here is a famous shrine of Hazrath Masoom Baba.People of Tatara are very simple, hospitable and famous for their Respectability Another picnic spot in the area is famous Warsak Dam.There is a rnest house for visiters made by government of Pakistan. Village Shaheed Mina is situated on the bank of river kabul that is also counted is a good spot for picnic.

Population

Now a days the population of Mullagori tribe is about 30,000. Famous villages are Lora Miana, Paindi Lalma, Sher Braj, Murad Dand, Tatara and Nehar Ghara.

Education

Mullagori tribe has still lack of education because of the non-availability of educational institutions from the government of Pakistan. The population is about 30,000 but there is no high school for girls and no college or higher secondary school for boys. My name is Ibrar Mullagori, one of the educated member of Mullagori trib . In 1975 the government of Pakistan built a high school but after passing 34 year, we are still in the same position . For girls here is no middle school in Mullagori sub tehsile of Khyber Agency. We show great loyalty to the Government but in response they provide us with nothing when it comes to education for girls and boys. The FC has started a cadet college in Mullagori area but despite the promises, gave no seats for MULLAGORI STUDENT and we are kept ignorant from education . The former governor Saeed Aftkhar Hussain Shah has given a Higher secondary school to MULLAGORI tribe when he visited to Jamrud the work has been started in Lowara Mina high school six room has been built but after completion of work the govt stopped funding for additional rooms and told us that this is not for higher secondary school. We are still hopeful that govt. will upgrade this school and will also give seats in cadet college Warsak Mullagori.
