Koodo Mobile is a flanker mobile brand in Canada started by TELUS in 2008. [citation needed] Koodo differs from its parent TELUS by not requiring a fixed term contract.[1] Koodo offers all its services on a month by month basis.[citation needed] Koodo uses the concept of a Tab which allows customers to build credit towards new phones or accessories.[2], Being a subsidiary of TELUS[3], Koodo has been able to offer extensive coverage and a strong presence in mobile retailers. This has allowed the young company to gain a respectable presence nationwide.[citation needed]

History

Koodo Mobile was launched in Canada on March 17, 2008 by TELUS as a discount service provider.[4] Koodo has used an extensive advertising campaign using iconic characters and a neon color palette to launch their brand and attract customers.[citation needed]

Plans and Phones

Compared to the traditional mobile carriers in Canada, Koodo has a limited number of phones available for its customers. Until May 2010, Koodo's selection did not include any smartphones, but as a result of customer demand, Koodo released the BlackBerry Curve 8530 on its network in May 2010.[5]

As a discount carrier, Koodo's plans tend to be cheaper in price than the traditional carriers.[citation needed] Additional features on Koodo plans tend to be all or nothing in nature.[citation needed] For example while other carriers may offer 100MiB, 250MiB, 500MiB, or unlimited web browsing, Koodo offers 50MiB or 500MiB.[citation needed]

Koodo currently uses TELUS's CDMA network, and has recently come out with a HSPA network, allowing users to purchase Koodo sim cards for unlocked phones. However koodo has not announced if they will offer the iPhone or other HSPA+ smartphones. TELUS has decided they will share their HSPA network with Koodo.[6]

Koodo Tab

Instead of a fixed term contract, Koodo Mobile uses a system called the Tab. For a new customer, the Tab takes off up to $150 off the price of a new cell phone, by applying this amount as an interest-free loan to their account. Customers will never be billed for this tab unless they cancel their service with Koodo Mobile. The Tab is paid down monthly by applying 10% of the bill towards the outstanding amount. Anyone using the Tab can simply pay off the remaining amount (less than $150) and keep the phone if they decide to leave (rather than pay early cancellation fees of typically $300 to $600 on other carriers).[2]

Once the phone has been paid off, the Tab begins to accumulate a positive balance up to a maximum of $150, allowing customers to apply that toward phones in the future.[2]

Payment Plan

Like any postpaid carrier, a credit check is necessary prior to activation.[citation needed] While Koodo does not utilize fixed-term contracts, if service is canceled the customer needs to pay off the balance left on their tab.

Unlimited Messaging

Koodo changed their rate plans in July 2008 to charge more for unlimited text messaging. The plans originally had unlimited text messaging available for $5/month,[7] but was replaced by an unlimited messaging plan, which included text, video, and picture, for $10 per month.[8] This was perceived by potential customers as contradictory to the company's initial campaigns, in that the plans were advertised as purely talk and text centric, without "fatty" extras such as video, pictures, mp3s, Internet. etc.[9]. However, in January 2009, the price for text messaging dropped back down to $5/month[10], now including both Text and Picture Messaging.

J.D. Power and Associates

Koodo Mobile was ranked “Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Postpaid Wireless Service” in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Canadian Wireless Customer Satisfaction Study.[11]
