School crest

Castleknock Community College, is an Irish community college Located in Carpenterstown, Co. Dublin. Established in 1995, the school is part of the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

The college is a co-educational post-primary school catering to an ever-increasing population growth within the greater Carpenterstown area. A comprehensive academic curriculum is promoted in addition to a wide-ranging programme of extra-curricular activities.

History

The college opened on Wednesday 30th August 1995 in temporary accommodation at Hartstown Community School. An official visit by the Minister for Education, Niamh Bhreathnach, took place on December 1996. The first students sat the Leaving Certificate examination in June 2000.

Achievements and awards

  • Junior Debating team won the Inter schools Dublin West Debating Competition in May 1996.
  • College Canoeing team entered Liffey Descent in May 1997.
  • Parents Association hosted The Fashion Show and raised €21,970.50 (£15,000.00) in November 1997.
  • School Choir reached the finals of Slogadh in March 1998.
  • First students sat the Junior Certificate in June 1998.
  • Gold Medal success in Leinster Athletics Championships in May 1998.
  • Silver Medal in the All Ireland Swimming Gala in the 200m.
  • Individual Medley. Students selected to represent Ireland and the College in the FISEC games in Spain in July 1998.
  • Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) launched in September 1998.
  • College Relay Swimming team won All Ireland Finals in Belfast in October 1998.
  • College Choir performed in the National Concert Hall in the County Dublin VEC Festival of Music in February 1999.
  • Grandparents' Day hosted by the college in May 1999.
  • Under 14 boys won All-Ireland Basketball Final in Kilkenny in April 2000.
  • Girls Under 14 Basketball won All Ireland Final in May 2000.
  • Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights launched the Refugee Solidarity Badge in December 2000.
  • Mental Health Public Speaking Team reached the All-Ireland Final in Trinity College in May 2001.
  • Leaving Certificate Applied Programme (LCAP) launched in September 2001.
  • College Basketball teams won three Leinster titles in April 2002.
  • School was visited by Chief Justice Minister John Howell in September 2003.
  • The Mentor Programme was launched in September 2002.
  • College Relay Team won the All Ireland Finals in May 2002.
  • Under 14 Leinster Gaelic football Champions in 2003 and 2004.
  • A senior student was elected chairperson of Dáil na nOg in Dublin. A Fingal County Council initiative to promote political awareness.
  • National Finalists in the Mental Health Public Speaking Project in 2004.
  • Pupil represented Ireland in the International Physics Olympiad in Amsterdam in May 2004, and won a silver medal.
  • Under 14 boys Gaelic football team won the Division B Leinster Final.
  • LC1 students of 2008/2009 raised €60,000 for street children in Calcutta in partnership with Bekind Ireland by holding an LC1 for Calcutta Day on 24 April 2009.
