The Guardian Project is a fictional superhero squad created by comic book mogul Stan Lee^[1] in conjunction with the NHL. There is a graphic novel out and soon to be a movie, the purpose for this is mainly to attract ones who do not play the game, to show you can still be fan. Each NHL Franchise is represented by one of the 30 heroes, titled "Guardians".^[2] They are all named in accordance with the name of the team (e.g. The Senator for the Ottawa Senators).

Main Characters

Mike Mason ("Team Leader") - A regular kid, he is a part of every Guardian (and they are a part of him). The Guardians are Mike's fantasies personified, born from an unexplained explosion at his father's workplace. Mike's mother died when he was young and his father died to bring about the Guardians to protect Mike. Mike's eyes burn blue when he's in sync with the Guardians. At this point (after Dark's attack) in time he is unable to communicate with any of the Guardians.

Deven Dark ("Arch Enemy") - Wealthy business man and owner of Dark Laboratories, Deven gained unexplained powers of agility, strength and control. He created an army of giant soldiers. It is Dark's intention to capture all the Guardians, for reasons unknown.

Plot Synopsis

“The Guardian Project” is the series’s eponymous fictional comic book story envisioned by one of the series’s main characters, Mike Mason. Mike created the Guardian story by combining his two favorite passions, the sport of hockey and the world of comic book superheroes[citation]. Through an as yet unexplained scientific phenomenon, Mike’s fictitious Guardian characters come to life during an explosion at Dark Laboratories.

After being brought to life, each of the Guardians goes on to defend their respective home cities against a series of villains presumably all controlled by the series antagonist, Deven Dark. The Guardians emerge victorious from each of these encounters, but it is later revealed that these encounters were case studies for Deven Dark, who noted each Guardian weakness during these events to be exploited later at the 2011 NHL All-Star Game in Raleigh N.C.

All-Star Event: At the All-Star Game in Raleigh, N.C., Deven Dark takes the arena hostage and threatens the lives of everyone in attendance. Mike sends the Guardians to deal with the threat. Once all the Guardians have gathered at the arena, Deven transforms the arena into a massive wind tunnel device that traps 29 of the Guardians. Only the Hurricane evades the trap as he manages to reverse the device’s magnetic pull, and he is able to close the vortex.

During the event, Deven also learns that the identity of the Guardians’ leader is Mike Mason.

After Math: The capture of the Guardians at the event in Raleigh weakens Mike Mason. Mike begins a long process of releasing his Guardians from capture one at a time.

Currently, the Hurricane, King, Bruin and Capital have been freed and have engaged Deven's forces.

He also has an incredible sense of smell and is able to track things from miles away. His sense of smell makes the Bruin the resident early alarm system for the Guardians as he can smell trouble coming. He's also an excellent interrogator as he can tell if someone is lying just by smelling them. He also has a roar that can freeze his opponents with fear. All of these abilities aside, however, the Bruin is at his core, a brutish superhero who can tear his opponents to pieces. Despite his incredible power, the Bruin is a giant kid at heart. 	Carolina Hurricanes	The Hurricane	January 3	A barometric nightmare with a personality as wild as the weather patterns he commands. The Hurricane takes flight by attracting water molecules from any nearby body of water. The moisture then circles his body like a personal water spout and lifts him into the sky. The Hurricane commands atmospheric pressure systems to generate hurricane like conditions. He also controls a power known as "barometric implosion\| wherein he's able to focus his powers on a specific object causing it to implode from the pressure. The powers of the Hurricane are enhanced when in a state of rage, an emotion not difficult for him to conjure, especially when his Guardian buddies, or Mike Mason, are in trouble. He can soar to incredible heights and possesses the ability of telescopic sight allowing him to pinpoint objects from well over 30,000 feet. The King’s body is sculpted like a bronzed Adonis. He wears a coat of armor comprised primarily of titanium mesh that allows for maximum flexibility without compromising durability. He has an enormous shield that bears the LA King’s crest which allows him to create a force field around himself during particularly dangerous situations. He also carries with him a broadsword that he of course refers to as Excalibur. The King can thrust the sword into the ground and grasp it with both hands, channeling energy into the earth’s crust, thereby creating small earthquakes. When the King tells you he’ll move heaven and earth in pursuit of his enemies, he means it. Marketing

The Guardian characters were revealed sequentially according to a bracket pairing Guardians and encouraging fans to vote via Facebook on who which character they would like to see first. ^{[citation needed]} The superheroes were revealed every day from January 1, 2011, until January 30, in time for the for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game in Raleigh, North Carolina.^[3]
