Charles "Charlie" Brenneman (born February 9, 1981), better known as The Spaniard is a former high school Spanish teacher turned professional mixed martial arts fighter and winner of the first season of the television show Pros vs Joes. He is currently training at AMA Fight Club.

Biography

Charlie Brenneman was born to Charles and Marie Brenneman in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The youngest of the four Brenneman children, he was raised in a traditional 1980's suburban-American home where the chance for success and opportunity was always within his grasp. Throughout his elementary and high school career he wrestled and wrestled well, laying the seeds which would later sprout as his enthusiasm and drive to win at MMA. Upon graduating from Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School in 1999, Charlie attended Lock Haven University[1] where he continued wrestling and finished his Collegiate Wrestling career with a Top 12 finish at Nationals and a nearly achieved All-American status.

Charlie earned his B.A. in Secondary Education/Spanish from Lock Haven University and soon returned to his hometown, having gained a teaching position at his former high school. During his three years as the primary high school Spanish teacher at the Hollidaysburg Area School District, Charlie excelled at teaching and inspired his students to the same level of success he enjoyed throughout his academic career.[2] He continued his education, gaining his Masters from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania in Sport Management. All the while the call from the ring beckoned him. It was during the first season of Pros vs Joes where he enjoyed a taste of the spotlight. He was unexpectedly cast after submitting his application to participate in the reality game show. Through the grit and determination he developed as a lifelong athlete, he succeed and won the first season competition alongside his older brother Ben. “It was awesome,” said Charlie Brenneman. “It was unbelievably surreal. The pros were super generous, super gracious. The competition was intense, and it was definitely real.” [3] In the time following his victory on the Pros vs. Joes game show, Charlie began casting doubt upon his career choice. “When I was teaching, each day was very similar,” he said. “What I love about fighting are the ups and downs, the good days and the bad days, the victories and the defeats.” [4] After some time of deliberation and thought he ultimately decided to begin doing what he loved most once more - fighting. He eventually resigned from his day job and began doing what would soon evolve into a successful and prospective MMA fighting career.

Fighting career

During his amateur career, Charlie maintained a 5–0 undefeated record. In an attempt to maintain his momentum, he quickly turned professional - debuting on July 28, 2007 against Marcello Olivera. Throughout early 2008, Charlie maintained a strong winning streak; notably winning a split decision over Drew Puzon at the ShoXC event on January 25, 2008.[5][6]

2008 Injury and AMA Fight Club

During a sparring session with one-time UFC fighter Chris Liguori, Brenneman sustained a major kick to the face, shattering his left orbital bone; knocking him down to his knees and temporarily blinding him. "Instantly, my eye went black,” says Brenneman, recalling the May 2008 incident. “In that instant, my whole plan, my whole future, everything I worked for, was over. Suddenly, it was about everything I couldn’t do.” [7] Brenneman was forced to undergo emergency surgery to repair the damage at nearby Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center at Rutgers University campus. During a multi-hour long procedure, vertical and lateral plates were inserted into his face to repair the aspiring fighter's face. “Even right after the surgery, it wasn’t fixed,” He said. “I lost vision in my left eye. I couldn’t train. I couldn’t fight.” [8] Following a successful procedure he slowly but surely began to regain vision once again as he endured a short yet agonizingly-long recovery period. Four months later he was back in the ring. The still yet-to-be defeated Brenneman felt the pain of his first official loss in the ring during his September 12, 2008 match against John Howard. It was then the solo-fighting Charlie Brenneman realized his need to be part of a team, subsequently joining AMA Fight Club. “I learned how important it was to be part of a team,” Brenneman said. “Up to that point, I was self-trained. Right after the loss, I joined up with AMA. My game is tenfold better now.” [9]
