|ShortSummary= Damon insists on Katherine to reveal her plans to him. She tells him that she has the necklace, and she has Jeremy. Pearl once told Katherine she knew how to kill Klaus, but she didn't share the information with her, only with Anna. Bonnie accidentally lets is slip to Katherine that Vicki and Anna have been communicating with Jeremy from beyond the grave. Anna never had the intentions to help Katherine, but Katherine threatens to hurt Jeremy so Anna gives in. The only person that can kill Klaus is Michael. The problem is that he is entombed and if they let him out, he'll kill everyone since he kills vampires.Klaus realizes that the original witch had lied to him saying he had to kill the doppelganger - he now knows he has to keep Elena alive. Hybrids needs doppelganger blood to complete their transition. He tests this on Tyler and feeds off his blood.Klaus compels Stefan to feed on Elena. He tries to resist but ends up giving in, sending Elena to the hospital. Klaus goes and siphons her blood to create more hybrids. Damon comes to stop Klaus. Damon says "Michael", which is enough to send Klaus running. Damon takes Elena home and offers to compel her to forget everything that's happened. She refuses, insisting that everything she's experienced is importnat to remember.
|ShortSummary=Despite all that has happened, Caroline is determined to see that Elena, Bonnie, Matt and Tyler all enjoy a traditional Senior Prank Night before the school year begins at Mystic Falls High School. However, when uninvited guests shows up, it doesn’t take long for the evening to take a deadly turn. Damon convinces Jeremy that he can use his new connection to the other side to help find a way to defeat Klaus. Klaus deepens his hold on Stefan and uses him for increasingly violent and dangerous purposes involving Elena too. And finally, Tyler and Caroline's relationship will suddenly be in danger.

The third season of The Vampire Diaries, an American drama-horror series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec based upon the series of novels by L. J. Smith. The CW officially renewed the series for a third season on April 26, 2011. It premiered on September 15, 2011 and will consist of 22 episodes.

Production

On April 26, 2011, The CW officially renewed The Vampire Diaries for a third season.[10] On May 19, 2011, with the reveal of The CW's 2011-12 schedule, it was announced the series would stay on Thursday's at 8:00 pm Eastern/7:00 pm Central as a lead-in to The Secret Circle which is is also produced by Kevin Williamson.[11] Kevin Williamson, Julie Plec, Leslie Morgenstein and Bob Levy are executive producers for the series.[12]

The third season premiered on Thursday, September 15, 2011.[13]

Cast

The series stars Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert, Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore, Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore, Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy Gilbert, Kat Graham as Bonnie Bennett, Candice Accola as Caroline Forbes, Zach Roerig as Matt Donovan, Michael Trevino as Tyler Lockwood, Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman and Joseph Morgan as Klaus.[12]

TV Line exclusively revealed that David Gallagher was as werewolf Ray Sutton who has a run-in with Klaus in Tennessee.[14] Lilly Roberson has been cast as Sofie, a new love-interest for Tyler.[15] Australian actress, Claire Holt has been cast as Rebekah, a beautiful vampire who had the pleasure of Stefan's company back in the early days when he was feasting on human blood.[16] Sebastian Roché has also been cast as a vampire hunter, who is more specifically after Klaus.[17] Jack Coleman was cast as Bill, a former resident of Mystic Falls.[18]

On October 6, 2011, it was revealed that Alice Evans will join the cast as Esther, Klaus' mother. She will first be seen in a flashback in episode eight.[19] Daniel Gillies will also return in a flashback during episode eight as Klaus' brother, Elijah.[20]

Storylines

"As the story progresses we see his journey, his struggle, his disease take over, this darkness, and it sort of turns into a Stefan that has no morals. "That's really, really fun to play. I get to play a whole new character and I get to do something that I have never done, and the audiences get to see me in a way that they never would've expected."

Over the course of the season, more about Klaus and The Original Family as his motives for wanting Stefan on his side will be revealed during season three. Stefan becomes darker, Damon and Elena struggle with the guilt of their growing bond even as they work together to bring Stefan back. Caroline and Tyler grow closer, causing a war between their two families. Ghosts from Jeremy's past have a message for him, and begin to affect his relationship with Bonnie.[12]

The first episode of the season will feature Elena's 18th birthday, "There will be a small time jump [from where last season ended] as we celebrate Elena's birthday. But as is the pattern in Mystic Falls, the event never reaches its climax." exec Julie Plec said in an interview with TV Guide. She also revealed that Elena will have to deal with her attraction towards Damon over the course of the season.[22] Plec has also revealed that Caroline and Tyler will be happy for a while, but something will "go terribly wrong."[23] “There is an agenda happening with our ghosts that isn’t just, ‘Hey, I want to make amends with my loved ones,’” Plec said regarding the ghosts of Jeremy's past.[24]
