Incidents

2010 accident

Train services were disrupted at stations between Woodlands and Yishun in the southbound direction for about an hour on the Vesak Day afternoon of 28 May 2010. This was due to a track incident at Sembawang Station.

About 7,300 commuters were affected when a man was hit by a train. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 11.30am.

To maintain service on the unaffected stretches of the North-South line during the incident, all southbound trains were turned around at Woodlands MRT Station.

Some northbound trains were also turned around at Yishun MRT Station.

To ease traffic, SMRT deployed bus bridging services to ferry passengers between Woodlands and Yishun MRT stations during the disruption.[1]

2011 accident

On Apr 15 2011, a man in his mid-30s, had fallen onto the train tracks at Sembawang MRT station. The Singapore Civil Defence Force and Singapore Police Force said they received a call at about 11.35pm.

Citizen journalism website STOMP said the man, who had been hit by the train, was transported to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and later arrested for attempted suicide.

He complained of back pain.

An online news portal reported a SMRT spokesperson as saying that about 1,500 passengers were affected by the incident. Buses were deployed to ferry passengers from Woodlands to Yishun MRT Stations.[2]

Platform Screen Doors

As with most of the above-ground stations built in the past along the North South Line, it was initially built without Platform Screen Doors that prevent commuters from falling onto the train tracks. After much delay, on 28 October 2011, the platform doors has arrived. On 29 October 2011, the installation of the platform doors begins. As of 30 October, three-quater of the gates have been installed on the northbound of the platform.
