The last name of Anna Faris sounds kind of Middle Eastern. Is she of Syrian or Lebanese decent? If anybody knows the ancestry of Anna Faris, please post.

I have found a reference to Faris on Greek Wikipedia as being of Greek origin. He is a hero of Greek Mythology, founder of the ancient city of "Forrai" (phi, alpha, rho, rho, alpha, iota), son of Hermes and Danaidas, daughter of Philodameias, their daughter was Telegone. I think her cameo in Malcolm in the Middle should be noted. If others are not familiar, it is the one where Hal is remembering waht he was doing when he met the different bosses he had. Role in Brokeback Mountain.

'Her Role in Brokeback Mountain brought her to the attention of a wider audience'. The comment seems unreasonable as Ms Feris could not have appeared in the film for more than 3 minutes. Disagree. I agree she's talented, but prior to Brokeback she was noted primarily for one character in the Scary Movie series. The Brokeback role, though not major, presented her as a more versatile actress. Cresix (talk) 22:56, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I always thought it was Anna, the normal way. Haven't you ever heard DVD commentary tracks where they mention her? For these directors, actors, whatever, it's always Onna. It's consistent. I might even have heard one once where someone says explicitly, "She pronounces it Onna."

It appears to be legitimate, therefore she should have mentioned it in a magazine interview at some point, until they got bored of asking.

In that case I think we can safely dismiss your statement that it is pronounced "Awnna" and not go on a search for confirmation. The first syllable in her name either rhymes with "can" (American) or with "con" (both of which are typical pronunciations; nothing unexpected about it at all). The first syllable does not rhyme with "lawn" (as you suggested with "Awnna"). Even your own examples are inconsistent. "Onna" is not pronounced the same as "Awnna". Lots of people named Anna say it as "Onna", but never "Awnna". People mispronounce and mishear things quite easily. I don't know whether the person on the DVD mispronounced, or whether you misheard, but her name is not said "Awnna". Cresix (talk) 02:12, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

In Canadian English, Onna, Awnna, and Ahnna are all pronounced the same way. The first syllable does rhyme with "lawn". "Saw", "on". As in Lana Turner.

So don't give me a lot of back talk.

In normal American or Canadian English, Anna is pronounced like "banana" or "bandanna", not like UK-style Bahnahnahrahmah. That is why someone bothered to point out the freakish (mis)pronunciation of her name on the bloody DVD commentary track.

She's an American actress, not a Russian opera singer or some Czech model.

Anna is never pronounced Onna/Awnna/Ahnna any more than we say Onne/Awnne/Ahnne of bloody Green Gables.

If you're old enough to be my father, you're probably teetering on dementia, which would neatly explain why you didn't hear the name as it was pronounced. How many decibels of hearing loss do you have exactly? No one -- and I mean no one -- in Canada or the United States (and I've lived all over both) pronounces the first syllable of Anna to rhyme with "lawn", unless they're intoxicated, or you. And if it's Onna or Anna, that's anything but a freakish pronunciation. I've known dozens of Annas who go by each. Can't say I've ever met an Awnna though. And I've never heard of Lawna Turner. I've never fished in a pawnd, but I do know where you can make a bit of cash if you have something that can be pawned. I've never seen anyone with blawnd hair either. I know a couple of guys named Don, but all of the Dawns I know are women. Oh, and I don't "purport" to be running this page, I just "purport" to be able to hear and speak Canadian and American English the way 99.9% of the rest of Canadians and Americans do.
