Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

Secretary of the IPA → PatriciaKeatingIPA

  •  Bureaucrat note: Your username needs to represent you and not indicate that you are representing or speaking for any group or organization. Please select a username which meets these criteria. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 08:53, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Bureaucrat note: I'll leave the user a note. --Dweller (talk) 12:51, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • (Non-bureaucrat comment) Bureaucrats - you're not helping much here. Why not PatriciaKeatingIPA? Do you mean there has to be an "at" between the personal name and the organization name? "PatriciaKeating at IPA"? That sort of name is encouraged AFAIK. Victor Yus (talk) 15:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(Non-bureaucrat comment) I think they mean, that "IPA" shouldn't be in the new name. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 09:49, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(Non-bureaucrat comment) My understanding is that names like "PK at IPA" are not prohibited and are even encouraged, as a way of letting everyone know about the personal connection (or "potential conflict of interest", for the paranoid). The WP:Username policy seems to bear that out. Victor Yus (talk) 10:39, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • WP:CORPNAME explicitly uses "Mark at WidgetsUSA" as an example of a perfectly valid user name, and as far as I can remember we do have similarly named users actively editing Wikipedia as well, so I don't see what's wrong with this request. --Conti| 10:55, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • If I could chime in, with an observation more than anything. There seems to be an implicit issue with the consensus opinion on CORPNAME in the community right now; Conti is correct that the text of the written policy currently allows a name like this, but such names are regularly blocked at UAA and declined at ACC. There's not a lot of consistency to go on. NTox · talk 14:56, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Do you have any examples for that? We ought to immediately change the policy if it's not being applied as it is written, then. --Conti| 15:18, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • We have a 'Mark at Alcoa' precedent which means that those kind of names are not blocked at UAA. Secretlondon (talk) 05:22, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • Looks like we need an RfC to sort this matter out. I just started one at the username policy page. And for the moment, this user (if she hasn't already been deterred from further contribution by all this mindless bureaucracy, for which I think sincere apologies are in order) should be allowed to use whichever of the proposed names she prefers. Victor Yus (talk) 09:32, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
          • Thanks, Victor. I plan to stop by that RfC in time, possibly with examples of ublocks that have been applied on this basis for context. I remember seeing a couple Alcoa-type requests declined via unblock-un recently; I'll see if I can track them down. Kudos, though, to those administrators who currently honor the precedent.
