XMG Studio Inc. is an award-winning mobile games developer based in Toronto, Canada that has received industry attention as an emerging leader in the global mobile gaming scene.[1]XMG's game portfolio is a mixture of original IP games (such as "Fashion Star Boutique" and " Drag Racer World") and co-production/licensed projects (such as Degrassi, Inspector Gadget's MAD Dash, and Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast).[2]

XMG Studio currently has produced games for three separate platforms: iOS App Store, Google Play[3] and Windows Phone Marketplace.[4] The company was founded in 2009 by former investment banking analyst, venture capitalist and tech entrepreneur, Ray Sharma.

In November 2012 XMG Studio Inc. partnered with international mobile games publisher DeNA. XMG and DeNA will be working together to bring select XMG games to the Mobage mobile social games network and platform for iOS and Android devices worldwide.

  • Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast (2012): An augmented reality, location based first person shooter. Reviewed in USA Today, Mashable, Maxim and JoBlo.
  • Fashion Star Boutique (2012): An extension and evolution of XMG’s hit ‘Style Studio’ franchise. Since launch, users have created over 50 million unique fashion designs.[5]
  • Drag Racer World (2012): Sequel to ‘Drag Racer: Pro Tuner’.[6]
  • Totally Amp'd! (2012): First interactive TV show developed specifically for mobile devices. The co-production with Smokebomb Entertainment (Shaftesbury Films) features 10 amazing appisodes and three interactive studios. Reviewed in USA Today, Wired and The Toronto Star.[7]
  • Powder Monkeys (2011): Monkey pirates face off against bug pirates in an action/adventure game packed with tower-defence style battles. After it’s initial release, XMG Studio Inc. teamed up with leading Chinese market entry specialist Yodo1 to launch localized iOS mobile game ‘Powder Monkeys’ in the Chinese App Store. Powder Monkeys skyrocketed to the top of the Chinese App charts and became #1 app in just two weeks.[8] [9]
  • Degrassi (2011): Co-production based on the popular Canadian TV series ‘Degrassi’ with Epitome Pictures and MuchMusic, allows players to interact with their favorite characters. Reached #2 paid games in Canada’s App store in 2011. [10]
  • Cows vs. Aliens (2011): Aliens are invading and players must save their cows by herding them into the barn using an addictive push mechanic. Won ‘Most Innovative App’ in the 2011 ‘Best App Ever Awards’.[11]
  • Inspector Gadget's MAD Dash (2010): Players take the role of the classic, crime-solving sleuth as he tries to save his niece Penny from the evil Dr. Claw. The popular mobile game has reached over 7 million downloads since launch.[12]
  • Little Metal Ball (2010): A full-tilt platform labyrinth game based on the original Little Metal Ball.[13]
  • Style Studio: Fashion Designer (2010): Application to custom create and design fashion apparel. Continuously featured by Apple in Fashion Week promotions in the App Store.[14]
  • Drag Racer: Pro Tuner (2009): Arcade side-view racing game that puts players in the driver seat. Created the drag racer genre in the App store.[15]
  • Pandemica: AR Shooter (2009): Arcade-style shooting game with single- or multi-player modes.Winner of ‘Best Augmented Reality App’ at the ‘Best App Ever Awards’.[16] Winner of Best Augmented Reality App from the Best App Ever Awards.[17]

  • ‘Totally Amp'd’ was awarded the coveted 'Best in Mobile Applications' at the 2012 annual 'Digi Awards', which honors the best in media initiatives in Canada.[18]
  • Iphone Life Magazine named ‘Fashion Star Boutique’ 'Best App 2012' in Style & Beauty.[19]
  • ‘Fashion Star Boutique’ players create an average of 250,000 new fashion designs every day, bringing the count of designs created since launch upwards of 80 million to date. [20]
  • ‘Ghostbusters™ Paranormal Blast’ is currently nominated in the categories ‘Best Use of Hardware’ and ‘Best Augmented Reality’ [21] ‘Best App Ever Awards’. [22]
  • In 2012, XMG Studio was named one of the the ‘Top 10 Mobile Game Developers to Watch’ worldwide by Pocket Gamer[23]
  • Cows vs. Aliens won "Most Innovative Android Game" in the 2011 Best App Ever Awards. [24]

  • XMG won second place in the ‘Best Racing Game’ and ‘Best Artistic App’ categories of the 2010 Best App Ever Awards for Drag Racer: Pro Tuner & Style Studio: Fashion Designer and also received four honorable mentions.[17]
  • In 2009, XMG Studio won the ‘Best Augmented Reality App’ from the ‘Best App Ever Awards’ for the company's first game released, ‘Pandemica: AR Shooter’.[26]


The Great Canadian Appathon

The Great Canadian Appathon (GCA) is an annual contest hosted by XMG Studio Inc. alongside media partners and sponsors. The GCA challenges college and university students across Canada to create their very own mobile game from start to finish within 48-hours. It is Canada’s largest competitive hackathon and is now going on its fourth segment. Winners of the GCA receive a cash prize, the option to get their game published in the applicable App Store and a job interview with XMG Studio Inc.[27]

The first Great Canadian Appathon took place in March 2011 and brought out 300 students across 10 colleges and universities. The winners of the $25,000 grande prize were a team based out of Edmonton, Ontario called ‘Team Masheen’. The Second GCA was held September 30th to October 2nd, 2011. With over 400 students from 20 schools involved, the participation grew significantly and covered 8 provinces. The winner of GCA2 was ‘Drop Table Teams’ out of Concordia University.[28]
