| Tracy Beaker || Dani Harmer || 2002-2006 || Tracy Beaker is the main character of the series. She is a child who resides in a care home, and has been a resident for quite some time. The series opens with her being taken back to the care home after a failed fostering situation. Tracy is a tomboy with behavioural problems, likely as a consequence of her mother abandoning her and failing to show an interest in her.

! style="width:180px; background:lightblue;"|Duration
In the first few series, she continually lies about her mother to get other children's attention and perhaps to try and convince herself that one day her mother will appear. In the later series, journalist Cam Lawson and her new husband Gary adopt Tracy. Tracy disliked Gary at first, but by the end of the series they remain on good terms. Tracy's story continues in Tracy Beaker Returns which tells the story of how Tracy became a care-worker at Elm Tree House, the former children's home she knew as the 'Dumping Ground.'

| Justine Littlewood || Montanna Thompson || 2002-2004, 2005, 2006 || Justine Littlewood is Tracy Beaker's worst enemy (although there are times in the series where Tracy and Justine seem to tolerate one another). They initially fight over Tracy's former bedroom, which Justine was given when Tracy was unsuccessfully fostered. To win back the room, Tracy held a 'dares' contest, which she won after eating a worm Justine had dared her to eat. Tracy got her own back on Justine, by refusing the room, after Justine had cleaned it out. One of big fighting points between Justine and Tracy have is parents, as unlike Tracy, Justine has a Dad who visits her irregularly. Over the course of Series Two and Three, Justine's relationship with her dad changes as he gets married to a new wife, Carrie, who is expecting their child. Carrie and Justine bond over time, and at the end of series three, she returns home. Justine also has a crush on Crash.

During series 4 Thompson only reprised her role once, in an episode where Tracy and Justine meet at a convention for Elaine the Pain. However, Justine returns to the children's home in Series Five because her cousin, John, moved into the household and Justine's father expected her to let John have her bedroom. After a game of football and an allergy to nuts the three of them became closer and Justine decided to move back in with her dad again. She is an angry, bad-tempered girl with attitude who likes to wind up Tracy and get her into trouble. Her best friend is Louise, until Louise leaves in Series Three. When she comes back, she becomes friends with Jackie and Crash, with who she later has a crush on. Thompson guest-starred in an episode of Tracy Beaker Returns when she comes back to visit the home, after her engagement.

|-
| Louise Goven || Chelsie Padley || 2002-2003, 2004|| Louise Goven is best friends with Tracy before Justine moves to The Dumping Ground. When Justine first arrived, Tracy was living with a foster family which made Louise feel better about making a new best friend. In the very first episode, Tracy becomes angry when she realises that her former best friend seems to have forgotten how close they were. Louise gets fostered at the end of series 2 by a large family. At first, she is reluctant to tell Justine how happy she is with her new family, for fear of upsetting Justine and making her jealous. She returns to the Dumping Ground often to see Justine and visit the residents of the DG, Padley appearing in episodes 4, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 26 of series 3.

Adele is treated by Duke, Mike and Jenny as a sort of unofficial fourth member of staff, doing odd jobs around the house and organising the younger teenagers. Adele's past is referred to briefly, when an former fellow resident comes back to look after the house. It is also mention that she used to sleep walk.

She is then let down and Amber spitefully tells Tracy to 'go play in the traffic'. Amber can be very moody. Amber presumably gets fostered in series 2, by some punk rockers, when she becomes close to them when they visit for the day. She meets them on the same day Louise gets fostered.

When his dad comes back, he gets nervous but faces up to his fears and eventually they get back on good terms.

| Jackie Hopper || Abby Rakic-Platt || 2004-2006 || Jackie is a friend of Tracy and Crash and is a trainee athlete. In her first episode, she is determined to get her grandpa out of his care home and cannot accept that he has Alzheimer's disease. Eventually she ends up staying at the Dumping Ground even though she doesn't like it. At the end of series 4, her grandpa dies and she leaves to go to a sporting academy. In series 5, she returned to the Dumping Ground after an injury. It was later revealed that she was missing everyone and faked her injury so she could come home. During the final episode of series 5, she and Crash convinced Tracy to go to Cam and Gary's wedding. She spent a lot of time running away at first until Tracy convinced her to stay and run off again when they least expect it which is really just a ruse to get her to stay there and not run off at all.

|-
|-
|}
| Michael Grys || William Tomlin || 2004 || The most unpopular resident of 'The Dumping Ground' in the third series. He is rivals with Liam "Crash" in and has a crush on Louise when she comes to visit. In one episode it is revealed that he has an older brother who is on the run from social services. Fostered in between series 3 and 4.

|-
| Roxy Wellard || Sophie Borja || 2005-2006 || The youngest of the Wellard family, the enemies of everyone else in the Dumping Ground. She is the brains of the family. She gets annoyed when Rio mixes with the other kids and continues to cause trouble. Roxy is a stereotypical goth. The audience eventually learns that her bad attitude is just a front and she is a shy and insecure girl who feels that it is necessary to maintain a tough exterior. For example, Roxy and Tracy engage in various games in order to decide who shall 'run' the care home. When Tracy loses a chocolate eating contest, Roxy is declared the winner. Tracy tells Roxy that she lost the contest on purpose. Roxy discovers that she reminds Tracy of the way she used to act as a child. The only way that Tracy survived was by being tough. In showing such fortitude, many of the children admired her and she often got what she wanted. Thus, this revelation brings Tracy and Roxy closer together.

|-
| Rio Wellard || Craig Roberts || 2005-2006 || The middle child of the Wellard family. He is a rival of Crash in Series 4, but by the end they are good friends. He mixes with the other kids after Chantal leaves. In Roxy's opinion he had "turned into a right goody two shoes." He pretends his dad is in prison when in fact he doesn't know who his dad is; claiming he was a thief & a teacher abuser.

|-
| Chantal Wellard || Deepal Parmar || 2005-2006 || Eldest of the Wellard family. The glamorous child of the Wellards. At the beginning of series 5 she moves in with her dad. She is portrayed as rude and tough, though she has shown kindness to the other kids. For instance she returns Jackie's stolen jumper and trainers, which she neatens up for Jackie. She does this in a sneaky way as if she doesn't want her siblings to know. She also bonds with Crash about his dad being a prisoner, implying she has a similar relationship with her own dad.

|-
| Shawn "Wolfie" || Felix Drake || 2005-2006 || A boy with rich parents who likes to live roughly because he has a fear of being trapped. Wolfie has a dark sense of humour but has had a troubled past before the dumping ground. He got his nickname from Dumping Ground kids, who heard rumours that he was bought up in the wild by wolves. Wolfie thinks the rumour is funny, so he doesn't bother denying it. Wolfie can be sarcastic but he's never malicious. In one episode it is revealed that his family are very rich after Roxy finds lots of cheques in a draw, which Wolfie's parent continuously send to him in the hopes of winning him back, but he vows that he can never forgive them after what they did to him. What happened between him and his parents is never explained. All the children act friendly towards him, but he finds out they only did this because of the money. Wolfie and Lol become good friends by the end of series 5, and he unintentionally drives Lol away from Bouncer.

|-
| Milly || Holly Gibbs || 2006 || Milly likes to watch Marco dress up and joins him when they befriend each other. However, she is very shy and chooses to be a mute. She speaks only twice on screen in the whole of her stay at the Dumping Ground. Milly is best friends with Marco and gets fostered with him by The Boxers. During a dream episode in series five where Tracy becomes careworker, Milly tells her to "shut her big fat gob".

|-
| Rebecca Chalmers || Georgina Hagen || 2006 || Rebecca is a rival to Justine, causing problems when she is forced to share a room with her. She also has a crush on Crash, and always manages to find a way out of her problems. Rebecca has no friends in the Dumping Ground but does not let this phase her. She has a younger half brother called Jake whom she does not see anymore. Rebecca is very two faced and sneaky. She makes out that she is lovely when behind everyones backs she is spreading rumours, telling lies and splitting friends up.

|-
| Alice || Olivia Grant || 2006 || A young hippie girl who believes in fairies. She thinks Roxy Wellard is her best friend and likes to see the good in everyone. She also likes charms and pretends to read a crystal ball on Lol's leaving day. Alice is also best friends with Layla and always hangsout with her. She is nice in all episodes but one of the episodes, she turns evil and gets revenge on Elaine. Alice shares a room with Layla.

Her calm and peaceful approach annoys all of the children and she often gets in the way of their lives although she ultimately cares about them and is trying to help them. She usually wears sandals, which Tracy pointed out near the beginning of the third series. Sometimes she tries too hard to do things the kids don't want her to do. For example find foster homes for them. The kids hate her and they call her 'Elaine the pain'.She is very into trying new techniques for anger which was shown during an episode where Tracy shows Cam what its like to be her for a day. In one episode Elaine sees a life coach and changes her life around, her appearance and her attitude are all changed but the kids change her back into her old ways.

Duke is very well-liked by the children and he often supports them when they are unhappy. He has a great sense of humour and rarely speaks harshly to the children. Thus, the residents of the 'Dumping Ground' are not often cross with him. He also cares very much for his plants because he uses many of them in order to prepare meals for the residents of the 'Dumping Ground.' At the end of series 4 he retired to be with his family.

Although he has been accused by his co-workers as well as some of the other children of being unprofessional, his 'childlike' manner allows the residents to trust him. Unfortunately, his behaviour also causes trouble and unintentionally hurts the residents' feelings. For example, Tracy becomes cross with him when he accidentally ruins a t-shirt which Cam sends her from New York. Furthermore, he also has to be reminded to complete his coursework. Nathan, however, can always be relied upon to view situations from the residents' point of view. Nathan is particularly fond of Dolly even though she lost him a girlfriend. He is sometimes referred to as the 'oldest kid in the home.'

| Camilla "Cam" Lawson (Previously Eyette) || Lisa Coleman || 1-8 || Cam is a writer and eventually becomes Tracy's foster mother. Cam met Tracy when Cam visited the care home in order to write a story about children in care. Although Tracy really wants her birth mum to see her, she also dreams of Cam becoming Tracy's foster mother. At one point in the series, Cam tells Tracy that she sees herself more as Tracy's 'big sister' and Cam does not think that she would be a good foster mother to Tracy. At the end of the series, Cam agrees to foster Tracy.

At the beginning of Series 2, Cam sent Tracy back to the Dumping Ground after she had burned down Cam's kitchen. Cam then again fostered Tracy in series 4. In series 5, Cam had a boyfriend named Gary who Tracy did not like and so Tracy moved back into the Dumping ground. Cam and Gary got married at the end of series 5 and adopted Tracy. In Tracy Beaker Returns, Cam and Tracy live in a new house and she seems to have divorced from her husband Gary. She appears in most episodes and sometimes is in the Dumping Ground, although she is usually set in her house. At the start of the second series of Tracy Beaker Returns, she fosters Lily Kettle, but days later Lily decided went to live with her Dad instead. When it is Lily's respite care she will stay at the DG instead of with Cam and Tracy. Cam appears in all series. In the end of series 5 Cam marries Gary Eyette but they were supposedly divorced after Tracy talked to Mike Milligan at the police station (where he was picking Liam up from AGAIN)in the first episode of Tracy Beaker Returns.

| Ben Batambuze || Luke Youngblood || 1-2 || When Tracy first meets Ben, he leads her to believe that he is homeless. Tracy later learns that he is from an exceedingly rich background. He is friendly, outgoing and best friends with Tracy. Although he does not live in the Dumping Ground, he participates in many of the adventures the children have. He even initiates some schemes of his own in order to make the Dumping Ground a better place for the residents. At the start of Series 3 it was revealed that he left to go to boarding school, but he does appear in a photo halfway through the series. This is the last we hear of him because Ben only appears in series 1 & 2. Lastly, Ben is a character who is usually able to calm Tracy down and encourage her to listen to other people.

Ben's wealthy aunt and uncle try to foster Tracy. They, however, wanted to take her to Scotland. Tracy rejects the offer in order to stay with her friends in England.

Synopsis

The series is the story of various children in a British carehome, told through its lead, Tracy Beaker. In the first three series, Tracy lived at the carehome and the stories revolved around her desire to leave the home, nicknamed by the kids as 'The Dumping Ground'. By the start of the fourth series, Tracy has been fostered by author Cam Lawson; the events of this are depicted in The Movie of Me. Because of this, the focus of the programme shifts slightly with the plots now focusing on Cam and Tracy's relationship, while back at 'The Dumping Ground', characters such as Jackie, Crash, Lol and Bouncer have been taking over Tracy's narrative role there. With the fostering of the series' primary antagonist, Tracy's worst enemy, Justine Littlewood, a new family called "The Wellards" are introduced to the home. Tracy's role is reduced further in the final series, notably she does not debut in person until episode 4, with the main narrative being the return of Justine to the 'Dumping Ground'. However when Tracy does return, she moves back into the children's home because of Cam's new boyfriend, Gary. Gary and Cam marry, which Tracy is initially hostile to, before adopting Tracy full-time. This closes the original series.
