This article is inaccurate. Ball blocked the royal car with his own and jumped out. He moved toward the right rear of the car, where the Princess was. Beaton left the car as he later put it, b/c he thought the driver had broke down. When Ball produced a gun, Beaton pulled his own duty weapon from its protective housing. Ball shot him in the shoulder. Beaton returned fire but missed Ball and ended up putting a bullet between Anne and Mark Phillips in the back seat of the car. Beaton got back into the car and closed the door. Ball aimed again with his weapon and fired. Beaton put up his hand to block the shot and was shot again in the hand. The chauffeur attempted to get out and was shot in the chest, not seriously. He stayed in the car. Beaton leaned across to try to shield Anne and Mark Phillips. He got into the back seat. The lady-in-waiting at some point got out of the car and went to pick up Beaton's jammed gun, but as Anne put it in a Parkinson interview, "Some bossy lady on the street told her NOT to touch it!" She left the scene. Beaton was delirious at this point from his wounds and in his words, believed there was a crowd of people behind Ball. He told Mark Phillips, who was holding the door closed from Ball, to release it as Beaton would kick it open and Ball would fall back into this imaginary crowd. It was a solid plan, but didn't work. Beaton weakly kicked at the door, which allowed Ball to shot him in the torso. Beaton staggered out of the car over to a small grassy area and laid down. Around this time, a journalist that had trailed the couple approached Ball and for some reason, tapped him on the shoulder (Anne said the man didn't realize Ball was armed). Ball turned around and shot him in the chest. An Australian passerby, Ronnie Russell, noticed the row and approached the car, just as a police constable came up, who was shot in the torso. Russell, angered by this shooting of a police officer, punched Ball in the head. At this point, the police swooped in from everywhere. Ball, seeing the jig was up, tried to run but was tackled by another police officer and was in Anne's words "smothered by the local rugby team". THAT is what really happened.
