"Shades of Cool"
Song

"Shades of Cool" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey for her third studio album, Ultraviolence (2014). It was co-written by Del Rey, and Rick Nowels, and produced by Dan Auerbach.[1] The song was released on May 26, 2014, by Polydor and Interscope Records, as the first promotional single from Ultraviolence.[2]

Background

Composition

Consequence of Sound described the song as "a slow and slightly gloomy ballad marked by reverberated guitars, slight atmospherics, and Del Rey's vocals that alternate between a hushed whisper and ephemeral wailing."[3] Billboard called it a "sweeping, atmospheric ballad that contrasts the more pop-savvy swaggering 'West Coast'".[4] The song consists of "a chiming guitar, slow-burn bass line, and swelling orchestra" which surround Del Rey's vocals.[5]

Critical response

"Shades of Cool" has received universal acclaim from music critics. Josh Wigler of MTV called it "fifty shades of great".[2] Chris Coplan of Consequence of Sound complimented the song for its "grace and sophistication".[3] Saran Shetty of Slate called "Shades of Cool" "a beautiful, brooding return to form [for Del Rey]" and compared it favorably to her previous single "West Coast".[5]
