Rising Star is a reality television singing competition which began airing on ABC on June 22, 2014. It is based on the Israeli singing competition HaKokhav HaBa (meaning "The Next Star") made by Keshet Broadcasting Ltd. The program is a continuation of the Israeli show Kokhav Nolad (meaning "A Star is Born") which features aspiring singers competing for a winning title. The program format combines the internet, smartphones, and television, and will be filmed live in Los Angeles.[2] The show will also be carried in Canada with advertising simultaneous substitution and voting access on CTV.[3]

Format

As opposed to other singing competition TV shows which feature a cast of celebrity judges, Rising Star features a cast of celebrity experts and considers the viewers at home the judges.[4] During each performance, the audience at home is able to decide in real time whether or not a contestant is sent through to the next round by using a mobile voting app.[5]

While the viewers at home are considered the “judges”, the expert panelists (Brad Paisley, Kesha, and Ludacris)[6] also influence the vote.

Each performance begins with the contestant singing behind a screen (“The Wall”).[7] Once the contestant reaches 70% of "Yes" votes, the wall is raised and the contestant goes to the next round of the competition. Alongside the viewers' vote, three of the panelists (excluding the host) have 7% of the vote each, which will be added should they vote "Yes". [2] Throughout the season, competitors are eliminated if they fail to raise the wall, until reaching the final stage of the competition, wherein four singers compete to win the title of "The Next Rising Star" and a recording contract with Capitol Records.

Time zones

Due to the effects of time zones on North American broadcasting, the show will broadcast at 9 PM EDT in the Eastern, Central, and Mountain Time Zones. Thus, the program will air at 7 PM Mountain time, with the program which normally airs at 9 PM Eastern/8 PM Central airing at 9 PM Pacific.[8] Additionally, the network's affiliates in the Caribbean Sea region, including Aguadilla, Puerto Rico's WPRU-LP and WSVI in the United States Virgin Islands will carry the series live despite being an hour ahead in the Atlantic Time Zone, as they both take ABC's Eastern feed an hour ahead.

In the state of Arizona, which does not observe Daylight Saving Time, the program will air live at 6 PM Mountain Standard Time. For Pacific and Alaskan time zone viewers, a dedicated feed will be provided to show real-time voting particular to these viewers and a comparison to how the earlier time zones voted. In an instance where a contestant who didn't pass based on viewers from the Eastern, Central, and Mountain Time Zones, yet ends up faring better with the Pacific and Alaskan time zones, the contestant will pass. As Alaska is one hour before the Pacific Time Zone, and programming normally airs similar to Central and Mountain time, Alaskans will be able to participate live as well; however, residents of Hawaii will not be able to participate since Hawaii time is two hours ahead of Pacific Time, and residents of the Mariana Islands, including Guam, cannot participate as well (since most of ABC affiliate KTGM's programming is a day ahead of the rest of the mainland United States). Live cut-ins to show reactions of contestants who passed only with West Coast viewers will be provided. There is no revocation of "pass" status should West Coast viewers reject a contestant. ABC has stated that the chances of the West Coast differing substantially from other viewers is statistically small.[9][10]

For CTV viewers in Canada, broadcasts will follow the ABC model completely, including CTV's Saskatchewan and Manitoba stations in the Central Time Zone airing the Eastern feed live and CTV stations in British Columbia and Alberta carrying the Pacific version (Alberta is on Mountain Time, but all television service providers in the province use U.S. network affiliates based in Washington state). Stations in the Atlantic time zone will air the show live with the Eastern feed. There are currently no CTV stations based in the Newfoundland Time Zone, but in general viewers in Newfoundland and Labrador will be able to watch the program on Atlantic Time-based CTV stations at 10:30 NT.
