LocationHar Nof, Jerusalem, Israel
DateNovember 18, 2014 (2014-11-18)
Deaths7 (5 civilians and 2 attackers)
Injured7 civilians
PerpetratorsUday Abu Jamal and Rassan Abu Jamal

On 18 November 2014, two Palestinian militants entered Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue, in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israel, and attacked the congregants with with a pistol, axes and knives. They killed four worshipers, three American citizens and one British, and a responding police officers. The two attackers were then killed by police. Seven other people were wounded.[1] The event was the deadliest attack in Jerusalem since March 2008.[2]

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) immediately claimed responsibility for the attack,[3] however the police chief stated he believes it was a lone wolf attack.[4]

Victims

Among the dead was Rabbi Moshe Twersky (50), head of "Torat Moshe" kolel, and son of Isadore Twersky[1] Also killed were Rabbi Calman Levine (50), Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Goldberg (68) and Rabbi Aryeh Kopinsky (40) were killed in the attack. Zidan Saif (30), a police officer shot in the head during the attack, later died from his wounds.[5][6] Seven more people were wounded, 3 of them seriously wounded.[7]

Attack

At approximately 7:00 a.m, during the Shacharit (morning prayer), the assailants entered Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue, and proceeded to attack the worshippers with axes, meat cleavers and pistols.[8][9][10] Two traffic policemen who heard gunfire came running to the synagogue and proceeded to engage the attackers. A third policeman arrived shortly after, and shot and killed both attackers. Two of the policemen were wounded, one of them critically.[11]

The first responder was Israeli-Druze police officer Zidan Sayif, who was critically wounded after sustaining gunshot wounds to the nose and brain.[12]

According to witnesses, the perpetrators screamed Allah hu'Akbar as they attacked the worshipers.[13][14]

Perpetrators

The perpetrators, cousins Uday (22) and Rassan (27) Abu Jamal came from the East Jerusalem neighbourhood Jabel Mukaber,[9]and worked at a grocery store near the synagogue.[15] They were relatives of Jamal Abu Jamal, who had been held in Israeli prison for militant activity, and released as a gesture of goodwill to the Palestinian Authority as part of the 2013–14 Israeli–Palestinian peace talks.[16] The two men were reportedly affiliated with the PFLP,[17] but their family stated that they were unaware whether such claims were true.[18]

Response

In response to the incident many protests were conducted around the world. Rabbi Avi Weiss conducted a protest at the Palestinian Embassy in New York City.[19] Ten right-wing Jews were arrested at a protest in Jerusalem,[20] and an additional 23 were arrested attempting to block the Jerusalem Light Rail.[21]

Palestinian response

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip celebrated the attack, handing out sweets, and brandishing axes and posters of the killers.[22][23] Palestinian television displayed photographs of celebratory scenes in Bethlehem, in the West Bank[22] and Palestinian radio called the killers "martyrs". Hamas praised the attackers and urged for "more revenge attacks". [24]

Reactions

  •  United KingdomDavid Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, condemned the Palestinian attack writing "I'm appalled by today's horrific attack on worshippers at a Jerusalem synagogue. My thoughts are with the victims' families."[29] the chairman of the Conservative Party Grant Shapps also condemned the attack, saying his prayers were with the families of the victims. He criticized former Cabinet Minister Baroness Warsi who apparently compared the attack to protests by "Israeli extremists" at Al-Aqsa mosque. Warsi stated that both Israelis and Palestinians have been killed by extremists and she wanted "justice for all".[30]
  •  France - François Hollande the President of France issued a statement condemning "the heinous attack this morning in a synagogue in Jerusalem and those who dared to welcome the act". Hollande "expressed his deep concern over the chain of violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank."[32]
  •  United Nations - Robert Serry the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, strongly condemned the attack saying "there can be no justification whatsoever for these deliberate killings."[34]
  •  Palestinian AuthorityMahmoud Abbas the Palestinian President stated that "the presidency condemns the attack on Jewish worshipers in their place of prayer and condemns the killing of civilians no matter who is doing it."[38] Hamas stated the attack was a response to the bus driver found hanged, which was ruled a suicide, however many believe it was staged.[39]
  • Hamas - In the Gaza Strip people distributed sweets to celebrate. Hamas praised the attack as "an appropriate and functional response to the crimes of the Israeli occupation."[40][41]

Media coverage

Originally CNN reported the attack as Palestinians killed in a mosque.[43] Additionally in their coverage they referred to the death toll as four Jews and two Palestinians, failing to note that the Palestinians were the attackers. They later removed their original stories and issued an apology.[44]

CBC News ran the story under the title "Jerusalem police fatally shoot 2 after apparent synagogue attack", emphasising the death of the terrorists rather than the attacked party. [45]
