Revision as of 13:10, 10 December 2014

This is a page for requesting tasks to be done by bots per the bot policy. This is an appropriate place to put ideas for uncontroversial bot tasks, to get early feedback on ideas for bot tasks (controversial or not), and to seek bot operators for bot tasks. Consensus-building discussions requiring large community input (such as request for comments) should normally be held at WP:VPPROP or other relevant pages (such as a WikiProject's talk page).

You can check the "Commonly Requested Bots" box above to see if a suitable bot already exists for the task you have in mind. If you have a question about a particular bot, contact the bot operator directly via their talk page or the bot's talk page. If a bot is acting improperly, follow the guidance outlined in WP:BOTISSUE. For broader issues and general discussion about bots, see the bot noticeboard.

Before making a request, please see the list of frequently denied bots, either because they are too complicated to program, or do not have consensus from the Wikipedia community. If you are requesting that a template (such as a WikiProject banner) is added to all pages in a particular category, please be careful to check the category tree for any unwanted subcategories. It is best to give a complete list of categories that should be worked through individually, rather than one category to be analyzed recursively (see example difference).

Alternatives to bot requests

Note to bot operators: The {{BOTREQ}} template can be used to give common responses, and make it easier to keep track of the task's current status. If you complete a request, note that you did with {{BOTREQ|done}}, and archive the request after a few days (WP:1CA is useful here).

Please add your bot requests to the bottom of this page.

Revive SDPatrolBot

It would be very useful to have User:SDPatrolBot revived or replaced. This one used to pick up where a creator of a new article removed a speedy deletion tag, which they're not supposed to do. Editors are doing this all the time and these are the savvier ones, some of whose pages probably need deleting more than most. The bot faded out in August 2013, can't see where this was ever commented on: Noyster (talk), 10:41, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As Kingpin13 seems to still be around (even if intermittently), I'll ask him about it with a view to taking it over if he doesn't want to revive it himself. If I can't get in touch, I'm more than happy to re-implement the functionality from scratch. – Reticulated Spline (tc) 12:02, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly I don't realistically have the time any more to run a full-time bot like SDPatrolBot. It would probably be best for someone else to take it over. I'm open to providing the source code, but since you're willing to work from scratch that is probably actually the best thing to do because it started to become rather bloated. I have to admit I'm a bit wary because of your lack of account experience Spline, and the fact that this is clearly not your first account. - Kingpin13 (talk) 11:26, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Kingpin13: You are right in your assumption that this is not my first account - I previously edited under a different account a few years ago. I had long ago forgotten the password to it, and felt that the simplest option would be to create a new account. I have informed ArbCom of this, and have now placed a message in my talk page header to make this link explicit.
Returning to the matter of SDPatrolBot, having the source code may be helpful to avoid me re-inventing the wheel algorithm. If it would be easy for you to make it available I'd appreciate it, but no worries at all if not. – Reticulated Spline (tc) 13:10, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Film taskforce tagging

At the Film Project three new task forces have been created. Please could a bot tag the {{WikiProject Film}} banner of articles in the following categories with the appropriate tags:

If an article currently doesn't have a talkpage or a film project tag on an existing talkpage, to add that too. Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 13:53, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've dropped a note on the bot-owners talkpage. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 08:08, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming articles containing T cedilla

T cedilla (Ţ) was wrongly atributed to Romanian language, which is using T comma (Ț) instead. There are 458 articles containing T cedilla in the name. They must be renamed, but also the S cedilla must be changed into S comma too (for example Căpăţâneşti has to become Căpățânești. I made the list with the articles to be renamed at User:Ark25/Robot#T Cedilla and I created a list with the current names and the correct names at User:Ark25/Robot#T Cedilla - Paired with the desired result. Most of the destination titles already exist as redirects to the respective page - they can be re-written without any problem. Thanks. —  Ark25  (talk) 22:43, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Note, however, the move does not complete the task—one needs also to replace respective words inside articles, too. For example you moved page Căpăţâneşti to Căpățânești, but the contents still says Căpăţâneşti may refer to several places in Romania: • Căpăţâneşti, a village in(...) --CiaPan (talk) 06:05, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It seems likely we're going to run into inconsistency here: Romanian words containing both "Ș" and "Ț" will be replaced, while those containing only "Ș" won't (and a bot can't tell whether the word is Romanian rather than one of the several languages using Ş). Anomie 12:42, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What about a template that says (cedilla in error?) in the style of the citation needed template. It would also categorize as "Romanian articles that may have words spelled with cedillas instead of commas". That would at least help human editors find them. WP:Goings-on

Could we have a bot to do all of the stuff described here: Template:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia:Goings-on? Oiyarbepsy (talk) 04:50, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for archiving a certain talk page content

I want a robot where you can ask that robot and he'll archive some talks in the talk page for you. Ask for archiving with 60-day-or-older talks and he'll do this. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 07:43, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some articles can really be messy and I want some of the talk pages to have archives. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 07:50, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Qwertyxp2000: Bots already exist for this job. They look for a block of instructions at the top of each talk page; see Help:Archiving a talk page for help with setting this up. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:06, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Which robot does such thing? Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 08:12, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help me. I don't know how. Please give me a brief way to grant want I wanted. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 08:22, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Qwertyxp2000: Start at Help:Archiving a talk page#Automated archival. Note the line of text "Note: Make sure to establish consensus before setting up lowercase sigmabot III or ClueBot III on a talk page other than your user talk page". Then, if you still want to go ahead, copy this text...
{{User:MiszaBot/config
| algo=old(90d)
| archive={{SUBST:FULLPAGENAME}}/Archive %(counter)d
| counter=1
| maxarchivesize=400K
| archiveheader={{Automatic archive navigator}}
| minthreadsleft=4
| minthreadstoarchive=1
}}

...and paste it at the top of the relevant talk page. Some time in the next 48 hours you should find that the older threads have been archived for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:29, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

So I copy that piece of text and paste it to the page that needs archiving? Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 08:34, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Qwertyxp2000: Yes -- John of Reading (talk) 08:40, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But it can't go just anywhere - it needs to be before the first section heading, and outside of any other templates that may already be there. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:30, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
