Andrea Martin (born January 15 1947 in Portland, Maine) is an American actress and comediennne of Armenian descent.
Her most famous work was on the Canadian sketch comedy television series SCTV. Her best known recurring role on it was Edith Prickley, a flamboyant television producer at the television station in Melonville.
Other memorable characterizations by Martin included repressed sexologist Dr. Cheryl Kinsey, insecure self-affirmation guru Libby Wolfson, pidgin-tongued janitress Perini Scleroso, tone-deaf children's entertainer Mrs. Falbo, Texan curio pitchwoman Edna Boil and impossibly tight-jeaned Melba, the Disco Queen.
Especially vivid is Martin's stunning depiction of an unhinged Wolfson struggling to write, mount and perform her own off-Broadway feminist theatre production entitled I'm Taking My Own Head, Screwing It On Right, and No Guy's Gonna Tell Me It Ain't.
Martin also played Wanda the Word Fairy in numerous short segments on Sesame Street.
One of Martin's first prominent roles was as the bookish sorority sister Phyllis in the 1974 Canadian slasher Black Christmas. Other famous roles include Aunt Voula in the popular film My Big Fat Greek Wedding; manager Phyllis Stein in the film version of the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch; and the current waitress on the Bounty paper towel TV commercials.
Star Trek fans may recognize Martin as one of two actresses to play Moogie, Quark's iconoclastic mother on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. For her role as Quark's mother, Martin was heavily made up to appear as an older woman. In reality, Martin is a little under three years older than Armin Shimerman - who played Quark in the various Star Trek television series. She decided to not return to the role as she found the Ferengi makeup to be uncomfortable, so Cecily Adams stepped into the role.
She is the voice of Miss Winifred Fowl on the Jimmy Neutron TV show. Fans of The Simpsons recognize Martin as the voice of Apu's mother, who appears in the episode "The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons." She also did voicework on the Earthworm Jim animated television series as the character Queen Slug-For-A-Butt.
She wrote and performed in the critically acclaimed one-woman show in Los Angeles and New York entitled "Nude, Nude, Totally Nude". She won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program in 1982 and 1983. In 1992, she made her Broadway debut as Alice Miller, King Kaiser's former performing parter turned comedy writer, in the musical My Favorite Year. The performance earned Martin a Tony award for Featured Actress in a Musical. In 2005 she hosted the 25th Annual Genie Awards. Along with the rest of SCTV she received the Earle Grey Award at the Gemini's in 1995. Later in the same year, Martin played the part of Golde in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway opposite Harvey Fierstein. In the 2000s, she had voiced Ron Stoppable's mother, Mrs. Stoppable on the Disney Channel's cartoon, Kim Possible.
She has two sons with ex-husband Bob Dolman, Joe and Jack. Dolman's sister, Nancy, is married to Martin Short.
Martin was named as a former lover by rock singer Carole Pope in Pope's autobiography Anti-Diva.
