Jackie is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Ciara, and was released on May 1, 2015, by Sony Music Entertainment. It's her first release following the birth of her first child. The album was preceded by the release of the lead single, a Harmony "H-Money" Samuels and Chris "TEK" O'Ryan production called "I Bet". Written by the singer, Samuels and Timothy and Theron Thomas of the production duo Rock City, the song debuted at number 96 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and has peaked at number 43. The album also features appearances by Pitbull, Missy Elliott, Joe Jonas and R3hab.

Background

Following her departure from her previous record label, Ciara signed a new deal with Epic Records, and released her self-titled fifth studio album in July 2013. After her engagement to American rapper Future, Ciara revealed to W in April 2014 that her sixth studio album would be predominantly inspired by her then-fiancé.[4] Ciara gave birth to her first child in May 2014. After claims of Future's infidelity during their relationship had surfaced, it was reported that the couple's engagement had been called off.[5] Following their very public break-up, Ciara's album release was further postponed to 2015,[4] and during this time the singer "quietly" recorded new music, while concentrating on motherhood.[6]

In September 2013, producer Mike WILL Made-It revealed that Ciara had begun work on her sixth studio album.[13] In December 2013, Ciara confirmed she was in the process of making a new album.[14] During an interview with Rap-Up magazine, Ciara revealed that recording for her sixth album began around Thanksgiving of 2013 and she would be releasing new music "really soon".[15] In late January 2014, Ciara premiered a live version of a song entitled "Anytime" at the Degree Women Grammys Celebration in Los Angeles. On February 2, 2014, Ciara premiered the studio version produced by Boi-1da and Katalyst, featuring her then-boyfriend and rapper Future.[16] The album features the song "One Woman Army", a track Ciara previously recorded for her then-similarly titled fifth studio album but was ultimately dropped.

Composition

The album opens with "Jackie (B.M.F.)" an uptempo trap and drum and bass song with lyrics such as; “Man, I just delivered a 9 pound, 10 ounce baby. I’m a bad motherf-cker!”. The next track "That's How I'm Feelin'" along with the sixth song on the album "Fly" are both electro-pop tracks.[17] "Lullaby" is a dance song that uses a metaphor of putting her man to bed tonight with sexual lyrics such as "Me on you and you on me/I don’t mind being your freak”.[18][19] The second single from the album "Dance Like We're Making Love" is a sultry and sensual midtempo pop song that has been compared to Janet Jackson.[20][21] "Stuck on You" and the deluxe edition bonus track "All Good" are both light hearted pop songs.[22] The lead single ""I Bet" is slow tempo 1990s-style R&B track with lyrical content that are based on subjects of betrayal.[23][24] The next song "Give Me Love" is an uptempo dance-pop and house track that uses Ciara's deeper, smoother levels and tones of her voice.[25][26] "Kiss & Tell" is an 1980s influenced fun and flirty dance-pop song.[27][28] The following track "One Woman Army" is an electro heavy dance song which starts with glitchy synths and has been described as a club empowerment anthem.[29][30] "Only One" is a powerhouse R&B ballad while the closing track "I Got You" was described as a classic Ciara ballad.[31]

Release and promotion

On January 14, 2015, Ciara announced the title of her album would be "Jackie" via her official Twitter account. Then in March 2015, Ciara announced that she will release Jackie in May 2015 and that she planned on touring the US later in the year.[32][33] The album is titled after her mother, stating, "I can now see the world through her eyes and I know what it’s like to be a mom... I am a mini Jackie and it's that simple."[33][34]

Ciara embarked on the Jackie Tour, her first tour in six years, to promote the album. The first leg of the tour goes from May 3 to May 31, 2015 and will visit 18 cities across the United States.[33][34] Ciara performed "I Bet" on Live! with Kelly and Michael on April 3, 2015 and during the BET Black Girls Rock! special on April 5, 2015.[35][36] She preformed the "I Bet (R3hab Remix)" with producer, R3hab, at the Coachella Music Festival on April 18, 2015, as well as the song, "Baby Get Up", which will appear on R3hab's upcoming compilation album.[37] On April 24, 2015, Ciara premiered a video snippet for the album's sixth track, "Fly", on social media site, Instagram; the video was filmed by Taylor Cut Films.[38] She went on to premiere video snippets for the album's other tracks, "Give Me Love" and "One Woman Army (Intro)" in the following days.[38] On May 8, 2015, a music video was released for "I Got You" in honor of Mothers Day.[citation needed]

Singles

"I Bet" was released as the official lead single from the album on January 26, 2015 in the United States.[39] It officially impacted Rhythmic and Urban contemporary radio in the US the following day.[40] The "I Bet" music video made its television premiere on Extra on March 9, 2015, followed by an immediate release to Vevo and YouTube.[41]

On April 24, 2015, Rap-Up magazine reported that the Pitbull and Missy Elliot collab, "That's How I'm Feelin'", would be released as Jackie's second single.[38] Three days later, however, it was announced via Ciara's official social media accounts that "Dance Like We're Making Love" would serve as the album's second single instead. "Dance Like We're Making Love" was then made available as a digital download on April 28, 2015 in the United States, along with the pre-order of the album.[42]

Following the announcement that "Dance Like We're Making Love" would serve as the album's second single, "Give Me Love" was given an official US urban contemporary impact date of June 9, 2015.[43][44] A new audio upload of "Give Me Love" featuring the official single cover, was uploaded to Ciara's Vevo account following the single's announcement.[45] However, on June 4, Ciara confirmed herself that the aforementioned "Dance Like We're Making Love" would be issued as the album's second single as previously planned.[46] The song impacted US urban contemporary radio on June 30, 2015.[47]

Commercial performance

The album debuted at number 17 on the US Billboard 200 chart with 25,000 equivalent album units (19,900 in sales) and has the lowest first-week sales amongst her first six albums.[48]
