Moonbeam City is an American animated comedy television series created by Scott Gairdner and starring the voices of Elizabeth Banks, Rob Lowe, Kate Mara, and Will Forte. It premiered on Comedy Central on September 16, 2015.[1]

A parody of 1980s cop shows such as Miami Vice, it is animated in distinctively bright, neon colors similar to the style of the 1980s artist Patrick Nagel and features a soundtrack of '80s-style synthesizer music, performed by Night Club.[2]

Characters

  • Dazzle Novak (Rob Lowe): Protagonist and Moonbeam City PD detective, despite being unqualified for the job due to poor impulse control, horrendous reasoning skills, ridiculous libido and ego, and (often) even worse aim. Any success is normally due to luck or the assistance of others (usually his junior partner, Chrysalis). Has an odd talent for invention and design, and is the son of stuntman Razzle Novak[3]. Dazzle's mother died when he was a child.[4]
  • Pizzaz Miller (Elizabeth Banks): Police chief, and Dazzle's irascible supervisor. She is frequently at odds with Dazzle due to his shoddy police work and defiance of authority, but fails to harshly discipline him for even severe infractions due to a revealed mutual attraction between the two.[5] It is later learned that Pizzaz is an heiress (and eventual sole inheritor) to Moonbeam City's founder, laser prospecting mega-millionaire, Vector Azimuth Miller. Pizzaz also has four abusive and conniving sisters: Charisma, Panache, Sophistica, and Accoutrement.[6]
  • Chrysalis Zirconia Tate[7] (Kate Mara): Dazzle's rookie colleague. A former lab tech, Chrysalis is the polar opposite of Dazzle (competent, level-headed, responsible), and often suffers from his irresponsibility. Chrysalis' job usually entails the detective work and technical aspects of the job, in addition to taking heat from Pizzaz over Dazzle and Rad's inept behavior. Chrysalis is the daughter of eccentric Naval Commander Blade H. Tate.[8]
  • Rad Cunningham (Will Forte): Dazzle's violent and childish rival/teammate from Canada[9][10] in the Moonbeam PD. He fears authority more than Dazzle, and is prone to even greater lapses of judgment, usually when trying to outdo or outsmart Dazzle. While initially seeming fierce and threatening, Rad is eventually shown to be incredibly cowardly and immature.
  • Genesis Jones: News anchor who appears in every episode.

Other characters by episode

Following is a list of minor and one-shot characters grouped by the episodes in which they appear.

"Mall Hath No Fury"

  • Aiaiaia: A new age singer and windchime player Dazzle becomes smitten with when he sees her perform at the Dell Moon Ridge Oaks Circle Square. Her name is variously pronounced as "eye-shah-shah-say" and "eye-shah-shah". No one is sure of the pronunciation, because, as she puts it, in her old country "If a woman utters her name out loud the shah will cut off your elbows." She mentions her parents are trapped in the said shah's copper mines.
  • El Diablo Malo: Drug lord and murderer Dazzle pursues in this episode.
  • Jade Armstow: A member of Aiaiaia's band π.
  • Manheim Crowkicker: A member of Aiaiaia's band π, who plays the rainstick. Also, an alter ego of El Diablo Malo.
  • Tyrus: A member of Aiaiaia's band π, anal flute player.
  • Uakpasiaq;A: Immigrant singer discovered by Rad, working in "a sweatshop that makes uncomfortable chairs for other sweatshops". Her name is even more unpronounceable than Aiaiaia's, being pronounced as an eagle scream.
  • Zenoo Windstoke: A member of Aiaiaia's band π.

"Lights, Camera, Reenaction!"

  • Odyssey: A nasal voiced sky dancer at the children's rave.
