At the 2005 World Fencing Championships she won a bronze medal in the individual épée event, becoming the first Canadian to ever win a World Championships medal in the sport. In the 2008 Olympic Games, Schalm was widely expected to challenge for a medal, but lost in the second round. She was seeded 9th.[3]

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she reached the last 32 but lost to Shin A-lam.[4]

She retired in 2013.[5]
