Dave Coffey (born November 2, 1970) is an American author and digital marketing pioneer and leader. He is the President of The Coffey Group LLC, a Michigan based limited liability company that provides marketing, business, and IT consulting services in the United States.

Coffey is also the author of Reading is Hard Work [1] a guide to helping children understand dyslexia. In addition, Coffey has published several articles on digital marketing and social media.

Education

Following graduation from Cadillac High School in 1989, Coffey earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Western Michigan University in 1993. Coffey also attended and studied German at the Salzburg International Language Center in Salzburg, Austria in 1992.

Career

In 1993, Coffey joined Campbell-Ewald an Interpublic agency and over the course of three years, he served in roles ranging from media planning on Chevrolet to serving as a team member in media research. Coffey also was part of the media planning team on Amoco.

Coffey joined Omnicom from Campbell-Ewald in 1996 as Supervisor of New Media Communications, responsible for overseeing digital media for Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler. He was promoted to Senior Vice President and Director of PHDiQ [2]. During that time, Coffey's digital marketing efforts at Chrysler contributed to Mediaweek naming him the Mediaweek 1998 All Star for New Media. Coffey later went on to win Mediaweek's Plan of the Year Award for Best Use of New Media in 2000.

Following his time at Omnicom, Coffey served as Global Director of Media Services for the Sapient Interactive Group at Sapient Corporation. While at Sapient, Coffey developed and launched a global offshore media platform. Coffey went on to serve as Senior Partner and a member of the leadership team at WPP emerging technology unit Neo@Ogilvy.

In 2009, Coffey formed The Coffey Group LLC. the Coffey Group is a digital marketing and I.T. consulting practice that has serviced several clients. As part of his consulting practice Coffey, he served as the chief digital officer of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based carpooling startup vRide owned by TPG Capital from 2012 to 2014. Coffey is also a seed investor with TPG Capital investments.

In recent years, Coffey has served in a number of advisory capacities, serving as senior advisor to the Chief Executive Officer North America of the media agency Havas Media from 2014 to 2015. In his advisory capacity at NBCUniversal, Coffey assisted his long time colleague Jeff Bell in developing NBC's "Challenge America" campaign, enrolling 300,000 participants and ultimately inspiring the season's theme for the network's hit reality competition program The Biggest Loser for Season 15 that featured the return of Jillian Michaels.

Author

Inspired by the story of his son's battle with Dyslexia, Coffey write and self published the book Reading is Hard work in November 2013. In the forward of the book Coffey wrote, "We decided to write and publish Reading is Hard Work based on our experience with dyslexia. We hope that our project will help you explain to your son or daughter that they are not strange or weird. Rather, God made us all in different ways and reading is going to be hard work."

Coffey has also published several industry articles including: Social Media Manager: Marketing's New Left Tackle [3], How New Media Can Shape Politics [4], Hear, Hear for Web Fragmentation [5], and Targeting Social Networks [6].

Accolades

Coffey was named the Mediaweek 1998 All Star for New Media and was also awarded the Mediaweek award for Best Use of New Media in 2000 for his work on Dodge. In 1995, Coffey was named to Newsweek Top 100 Media Stars of the Future while working at Campbell-Ewald.
