Song |
"Side to Side" is a song recorded by American singer Ariana Grande, serving as the third single for her studio album, Dangerous Woman. The song features the vocal collaboration of Trinidadian-born American rapper Nicki Minaj. Grande co-wrote the song with Minaj, Savan Kotecha, Alexander Kronlund, Max Martin, and Ilya Salmanzadeh, with the latter two also handling the song's production.[1] The song was released on August 30, 2016.[2]
Composition
The song has been described as reggae-pop and R&B.[3][4]
Lyrically, "Side to Side" talks about soreness after sex.[4] In an interview to MTV News reporter Gaby Wilson, Grande explained "that whole song is about riding leading to soreness."[5]
Music video
Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the music video made its official premiere on American clothing brand Guess's website on the night of August 28, 2016.[6][7] It was released on Grande's Vevo channel on August 29. As of September 3, the video has received over 20 million views.[8]
The music video opens with Grande leading a spin class on stationary bicycles, performing a synchronized choreography with backup dancers.[9][10] The video then transitions to a gym and locker room scene, where Grande and the backup dancers are seen with boxing equipment.[9][11] Grande and Minaj is then seen in a sauna scene, surrounded by male models. The video featured product placement from Guess.[12]
Live performances
Grande performed "Side to Side" at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards with Minaj. Stationary bicycles and a pommel horse were featured as props in the performance.[13][14]
