Kalvakuntla Kavitha (born 13 March 1978)[1] [2] is an Indian Member of Parliament and Telangana Rashtra Samithi party member.[3] She is a daughter of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader K. Chandrasekhar Rao.[4] She was elected as the Chief Commissioner for Bharath Scouts and Guides in 2015.[5] On 15 July 2015, special Indian Postal covers of Kavitha came into existence on the occasion of Pushkaram.[6]

Political career

Kavitha runs a non-governmental organisation called Telangana Jagruthi.[7]

In the General Elections 2014, Kavitha was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from the Nizamabad constituency.[8]

Controversies

Her statement that both Telangana (as part of the Hyderabad state) and Jammu and Kashmir were "forcefully annexed" to India landed her in controversy. Sedition charges were filed against her in August 2014 by Hyderabad police, upon directions from a local court. [9][10] The complaint was made by K. Karunasagar, a local BJP convenor. She even said that few parts of Kashmir belonged to Pakistan and that Telangana and Kashmir were not part of India earlier.[11][12] Kavitha was booked under Sections 124A (Sedition), 153B (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration), 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code for her anti-national remarks.[13] She justified her father KCR's praise of Nizam rule saying Nizam was a great ruler, some small things go wrong in everybody's rule.[14][15]
