- Miss Chinese International Pageant 1996 was held on January 27.[1]
February
- Intelsat 708 was destroyed on February 14 (day in China at the time).[2]
- On February 14, Long March 3B launched its first flight.[3]
- On February 3, 1996 Lijiang earthquake hit Lijiang City and left at least 322 killed, 3,925 serious injuries, and 13,000 injuries.[4]
March
- The Republic of China presidential election took place on March 23. Lee Teng-hui was elected president and Lien Chan was elected vice president.[5][6]
- The Third Taiwan Strait Crisis ended on March 23.[7]

- China competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics. The closing ceremony of the Olympics was on August 4. In total there were 294 athletes who competed for China.[8]

- Chinese Jia-A League 1996 ended in late October. Dalian Wanda won the championship.[10]
