Ramaleela is a 2017 Indian Malayalam-language political conspiracy thriller film written by Sachy and directed by debutante Arun Gopy. It stars Dileep, Mukesh, Kalabhavan Shajon, and Prayaga Martin in the lead roles. The film is produced and distributed by Tomichan Mulakuppadam under Mulakuppadam Films. Ramaleela's release was delayed on account to Dileep's arrest for conspiracy of kidnapping and rape attempt on an Indian film actress.[4] Despite calls for a boycott, the film released in India on 28 September 2017.[1]
Plot
Advocate Ramanunni (Dileep) is an MLA who after getting expelled from his communist party, the CDP, because of assaulting the State Secretary Ambady Mohan (Vijayaraghavan) who insults him, joins the rival Congress party, the NSP. Ramanunni, who has been receiving many threatening blackmails, decides to take a gun license for self-protection which becomes a big controversy. Ramanunni's mother Ragini (Raadhika) disapproves of his decision to join the NSP as they come from a communist-oriented family. To contest in the upcoming elections, the NSP decides to appoint Ramanunni as their candidate. The decision is opposed by Udhyabhanu (Siddique), a veteran politician of the NSP, who lost to Ramanunni in the previous election. Ramanunni, along with his sidekick Thomas Chacko (Kalabhavan Shajon), attends an interview of a news channel with Ambady Mohan, who assaults Ramanunni. As the promotions for the elections begin, the CDP announces their candidate as Ragini, who they think is the only person who can defeat Ramanunni. While promoting the election during a football match, Ambady Mohan gets assassinated and Ramanunni and Thomas Chacko, who were sitting the gallery at that time, become the prime suspects. The investigation officer, DYSP Paulson Devassy (Mukesh) finds out that one bullet is missing from Ramanunni's gun and the bullet that killed Ambady Mohan is the same type used in Ramanunni's gun. Ramanunni and Thomas Chacko escape from police custody and shelter in the house of V.G Madhavan (Renji Panicker), a journalist and a good friend of Ramanunni. Madhavan's daughter Helena (Prayaga Martin) decides to help them hide from the police. With their appearances changed, Ramanunni and Thomas Chacko are escorted to a resort in an island off the coast of Goa. Unknown to Ramanunni and Thomas Chacko, Helena televises all their actions through hidden cameras in order to find the real culprit. Ramanunni beats up Thomas Chacko to spit out the truth as he knows to find out who the real killer was. Thomas Chacko, who suspects Ramanunni, asks him what happened between him and Ambady Mohan during the interview. Ramanunni responds that Ambady Mohan and Udhayabhanu was the reason behind his father's death and that he reacted to Mohan who in turn kicked him out of the room. As the videos get televised, Paulson Devassy gathers evidence that all lead to Udhayabhanu, who was also at the gallery at the time when Ambady Mohan was assassinated. The gun of Udhayabhanu is also similar to that of Ramanunni's and a can of Red Bull, which was used as the silencer, is found from the gallery, which suggests that Udhayabhanu is the assassin as he is an avid drinker of Redbull. Thus, Ramanunni becomes free from the accusation and Udhayabhanu is arrested. The televising of Ramanunni's veiled life was really a plan concocted by him and Helena in order to prove his innocence. With his innocence proved, Ramanunni wins the election as an independent candidate. Ramanunni is praised by his followers and returns to his home. In the end it is revealed that it was in fact Ramanunni who had assassinated Ambady Mohan with the help of a fellow CDP comrade called Chandran (Suresh Krishna). He accused Udhayabhanu because he played a vital role in his father's death. He explains to his mother that as a communist, it's his duty to remove all obstacles from the CDP. His mother becomes proud of him and salutes her son.
