Reputation (stylized as reputation) is the upcoming sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It is scheduled for release on November 10, 2017, through Big Machine Records.[1]

Background and release

On August 18, 2017, Swift wiped all posts from her social media accounts, as well as her official website.[2] A few days later, Swift posted a series of clips of a coiled snake,[3] which many publications speculated was a reference to her feuds with Kanye West, Katy Perry, Calvin Harris and Kim Kardashian the previous year.[4] Fans speculated that Swift was about to announce an upcoming album.[2][5] On August 23, Swift announced the album on her Instagram, revealing the album cover art and release date.[3] Reputation is scheduled to be released on November 10, 2017.[6][7] The album's lead single, "Look What You Made Me Do", was released on August 24, 2017.[8][9] On September 2, Swift teased a second song during ABC's Saturday Night Football telecast and was later posted on Instagram, titled "...Ready for It?", previewing the new track.[10] The song was released on September 3, 2017 as a promotional single. On October 20, 2017, Swift released a third song titled "Gorgeous" at midnight as a promotional single.[11] A track named "Call It What You Want" was released on November 2, 2017 as a promotional single with an accompanying lyric video.[12]

A month before the release of album, Swift hosted several exclusive secret sessions; in London,[13] Rhode Island,[14] Nashville[15] and Los Angeles.[16] She said, "Everything about this album is a secret." Each party had a number of attendees, with a total of 500 fans chosen from around the world, for whom the album was played but none of them leaked any music. The behind the scenes footage for the sessions was released on November 7 on ABC's Good Morning America.[17]

On November 7, Bloomberg reported the album will be kept off streaming services upon release for an unspecified amount of time.[18]

Artwork and packaging

Reputation's cover art was photographed by Mert and Marcus[19] in London.[20] The cover features Swift in a grey sweater and choker necklace with newspaper headlines of her name over one side of her face.[21]

Target will be releasing two 72-page magazines that contain different content, including the album in the US.[22] Walmart will exclusively carry the magazine in Canada.[23] The magazines will contain photos, handwritten lyrics, poetry and paintings by Swift.[24] The Reputation Vol. 1 magazine cover was shot by Mert and Marcus. Vol. 2 was shot by Benny Horne and features Swift in a camouflage jacket.[25]

Promotion

UPS has announced it will be the "Official Delivery Partner" for Reputation.[26] UPS trucks in select cities will feature a decal of the Reputation album cover. UPS is encouraging fans to take pictures of the trucks and post images to Twitter with a hashtag for an "improved opportunity" to buy concert tickets.[27]

Swift is also partnering with Ticketmaster in a bundling program; those who would like to purchase tickets for Swift's upcoming live concerts can sign up to be put on a wait list, and can also gain wait list priority through a variety of methods, including purchasing merchandise and pre-ordering Reputation.[26][28] The program ends on November 28, 2017 when fans will receive further instructions on how to purchase tickets.[29]

Swift partnered with AT&T to produce a multi-part behind-the-scenes series chronicling the making of Reputation, titled "The Making of a Song". The series will be shown exclusively on AT&T beginning on November 13. A Reputation pop-up store will take place in New York City from November 12 to 16. The store will offer fans the new album for purchase along with exclusive merchandise.[30]

Singles

On August 24, 2017, "Look What You Made Me Do" was released as the lead single from Reputation. The song broke several major records including the most Spotify streams in a 24-hour period by any artist.[31] It hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with the biggest sales and streaming figures of the year, becoming the fifth song by Swift to top the chart and also the first solo number one by a woman with 84.4 million streams since Adele's "Hello" in 2015 and the second biggest after "Harlem Shake" (103.3 million).[32] Its accompanying music video later premiered at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards and was viewed 43.2 million times on YouTube in its first 24 hours, the most in any video in history breaking the 27.7 million views of "Hello" in 2015.[31]

On September 2, 2017, Swift teased on Instagram that the first track off Reputation, titled "...Ready for It?", was going to be released as a promotional single.[33] It was made available for digital download with the pre-order of Reputation on September 3, 2017.[34] On October 23, 2017, a teaser of the music video for the song was released.[35] The next day, on October 24, the song impacted rhythmic contemporary radio as the album's second single.[36] The official music video premiered on October 27.[37]

Promotional singles

On October 19, 2017, Swift announced she would be releasing a new song titled "Gorgeous".[38] It became available the next day through digital retailers and streaming services as a promotional single from the album.[11] The song reached the top ten in Canada and Australia and the top twenty in the United Kingdom and United States. On November 2, 2017. Swift announced she would be releasing the second promotional song from Reputation, while posting teasers on her official Twitter and Instagram accounts. The track, titled "Call It What You Want" was released at midnight on November 3, 2017.[39]

On November 9, she will give a special performance of her new song, for the first time in three years, during the broadcast of ABC's Scandal.[17]

Commercial performance

A week prior to the release of Reputation, pre-orders for the album were reported to be over 400,000 units in the United States. The album was also noted to be Target's biggest pre-sale for music of all time. Billboard stated that this is over twice the amount of pre-sales than Swift's previous album, 1989, which sold 1.2 million in the first week three years previously.[40]
