Hauser & Wirth is a Swiss art gallery specialising in contemporary and modern art. It was founded by Iwan and Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser in 1992, and has spaces in Zurich, in London and Somerset in the United Kingdom, and in New York and Los Angeles in the United States. The Financial Times has called it "the marketplace of ideas".[2]
History
Hauser & Wirth has three exhibition spaces in the former Löwenbräu Zürich brewery building in Zürich, in Switzerland.[3]
The gallery opened a branch in London in 2003.[4] It was housed in the old Midland Bank building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built in 1922–1923.[5] In 2013 it was one of the spaces used for a non-selling show of works from the collection of Reinhard Onnasch, curated by Paul Schimmel.[6]
In September 2009, the gallery opened a New York branch in the former Martha Jackson Gallery townhouse on 32 East 69th Street, in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where in 1961 Allan Kaprow created his installation Yard. The first show in the new gallery was a re-creation of the work by William Pope.L.[7] Another New York space was opened in 2013 in a 1930s garage and stable building on 511 West 18th Street.[8][9]
In 2014, Iwan Wirth opened a branch of the gallery at his home in England, a farm near Bruton in Somerset, with a restaurant and a garden landscaped by Piet Oudolf behind the gallery buildings. The first show was of work by Phyllida Barlow.[10][11][12]
In 2015, the gallery began construction on a new building, designed by Annabelle Selldorf, at 542 West 22nd Street in New York.[13]
In March 2016, in partnership with Paul Schimmel, the gallery opened a branch in a former flour mill at 901 East 3rd Street in Los Angeles, California,[14] and in March 2018 it opened a branch in the H Queen's building in Hong Kong.[15]
A book on the gallery, Hauser & Wirth: 20 Years by Michaela Unterdörfer, received an award for "most outstandingly produced book" at the Spear's Book Awards in 2013.[16][17]
