}} "1999" is a song by British singer-songwriter Charli XCX and Australian singer Troye Sivan, released as a single on 5 October 2018.[1] The single cover was inspired by the 1999 film The Matrix.[1] It follows several singles released earlier in 2018 by Charli XCX and Sivan's 2018 album Bloom.

Background

The song marks the first collaboration between Charli XCX and Sivan.[2]

Artwork

The cover art was noted to be similar to 1999 film The Matrix, with Sivan dressed as the character Neo wearing dark sunglasses, a black overcoat and dyed black hair against a bright green background.[2] He is flanked by Charli XCX, who was said to be dressed as the character Trinity.[2] Billboard also noted a similarity to Aaliyah in the music video for the 2000 song "Try Again".[3]

Promotion

Charli XCX and Sivan shared a "cryptic" exchange on Twitter before both shared the cover art and title of the song.[4][5]

Music video

The music video was released on 11 October 2018, and features Sivan and Charli XCX in various homages to 1990s pop culture, including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Titanic, The Matrix. American Beauty, The Sims and music videos of Spice Girls' Say You'll Be There, TLC's Waterfalls and Backstreet Boys' I Want It That Way.[6]
