On-Demand Education Marketplace, doing business as ODEM (English pronunciation:[ōd-əm]), a Swiss-registered provider of educational services, training, software, and credential-verification systems, is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, with operations in San Francisco, California and several satellite offices.

ODEM was founded by Richard Maaghul and J. William Bayrd, II in December 2017 to use blockchain technology to streamline and reduce the cost of organizing short-term learning programs. ODEM has ownership and operational ties with Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Excelorators Inc, an established developer of training courses for international students on the campuses of elite U.S. institutions including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.[1]

Through the ODEM Platform, students can directly connect with educators to complete short-term blended academic programs.[2] ODEM’s programs will include blockchain, STEM, AI, machine learning, robotics, and more. The Platform uses smart contracts to manage transactions between students, educators, and service providers including payments and disbursements of curriculum royalties.[3] Payment for programs can be made in cryptocurrency or fiat.

ODEM helps educational institutions and companies issue Ethereum blockchain based certificates of achievement to students and employees.[4] The certificates include the name of the student, the educator, program, institution, date, and the IPFS hash where the physical certificate can be accessed with a passphrase. In December 2018, ODEM partnered with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to issue and store blockchain certificates for its students. The polytechnic became the first post-secondary institution in Canada to issue such credentials.[5]

Academic institutions will be able to transfer selected educational records from the blockchain to their databases. Students can negotiate the cost of courses through the Platform’s bidding process. Employers can dictate which programs, that upon successful completion, will enable the student to become their employee. Licensing of course material, service providers, tutors, mentors, sponsorships, and an ODEM Token (ODE) reward system will also be available on the Platform.

ODEM’s mission is to make higher education more accessible, affordable, transferable, and verifiable.

History

December 2017 - ODEM founded

February - March 2018 - Token sale generating 10,000 ETH (about $10 million in the first quarter of 2018)

September 2018 - ODEM DApp activated on the mainnet

February 2019 - ODEM Platform scheduled to go live

ODEM Token (ODE)

The ERC-20 ODE sold in the token sale will provide access to the ODEM Platform through the staking process. The ODE economic model is based on the Sweetbridge Foundation’s discount-token research. The design isolates the utility of ODE on the Platform from external market forces, ensuring that use of ODE is always advantageous.[6]

The ODEM staking architecture is based on the adoption of the Ethereum ERC-900 interface.[7] A student stakes a desired program by committing a small amount of ODE. Educators stake courses they intend to teach. Staking assists the Platform in assessing levels of student and educator interest. If a participant backs out, their staked ODE are forfeited. Using ODE eliminates issues associated with fiat, including high fees and lengthy processing times.
