Operations
Germany
In Germany, Hermes Logistik Gruppe (HLG) is the country's largest post independent provider of deliveries to private customers.
United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, Hermes processes three hundred million parcels each year. The company operates a network of nearly 10,000 independent couriers that provide doorstep delivery.[3] Through this network, Hermes provides delivery services to many online retailers in the United Kingdom, including Next Directory, ASOS, Tesco, John Lewis, Debenhams, Arcadia Group and Asda.[4] In September 2013, Hermes was named the Best Mail/Home Delivery Solution provider at the ECMOD Direct Commerce Awards.[5]
In January 2014, the company was named as the second worst parcel delivery services in the United Kingdom by a consumer survey, with 30% of customers rating their experience as "bad".[6] In January 2016, Hermes confirmed that the peak period of 2015 was its busiest to date. During December 2015, the company processed 30.3 million parcels, representing a 24% increase on the previous year. The busiest day of the year fell on Friday 4 December, when Hermes processed 1.4m parcels.[7]
In September, the government requested that HM Revenue and Customs consider launching an investigation into Hermes, after workers alleged they received pay equivalent to lower than the current minimum wage in the United Kingdom.[8]
In 2017, Hermes won several awards including the Operational and Compliance Excellence Award at the Motor Transport Awards,[9] the Courier Team of the Year award from the Institute of Couriers,[10] the award for the Operations (Large) category at the SHD Logistics Awards[11] and the award for the Customer Experience Champion at the UK Contact Centre Awards.[12]
On 25 June 2018 an employment tribunal in Leeds found that a group of 65 couriers, supported by the GMB union through lawyers Leigh Day, were workers entitled to employment rights, including minimum wage and holiday pay, rather than self-employed as Hermes asserted. The GMB stated the ruling was likely to affect 14,500 Hermes couriers. Hermes are considering an appeal.[13]
On 26 June 2018, CHICKS announced that Hermes had signed a partnership agreement pledging it's support to the charity.[14] CHICKS is a national children's charity providing free respite breaks to children aged 8–15 from all over the UK, and who would really benefit from a break from their home lives.[15]
On 4 July 2018, Hermes was awarded Digital Team of the Year at the Computing awards.[16]
Hermes was the first parcel carrier in the UK to introduce a fleet of HGV units running on 100% renewable bio-methane fuel[17]. Hermes also added a fleet of 100% electric vehicles[18] to its operation in October 2018. The addition of these vehicles resulted in Hermes winning the GreenFleet award for Private Sector Fleet of the Year (Medium to Large)[19] in November 2018, recognising it's efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its fleet.
Hermes Send
Hermes also provides a delivery and collection service, formally known as myHermes for SMEs and members of the public via doorstep collection and its "Hermes ParcelShops"[20]. The myHermes brand was launched in 2009 and retired in 2018 following the launch of the Hermes 'The Parcel People' strapline. The new branding features 'send, receive, return parcels'[21] as the core message. There are currently more than 4,500 ParcelShops across the United Kingdom, based in local supermarkets, petrol stations and shopping centres. In December 2014, Hermes signed a partnership agreement with Payzone to launch 1,000 myHermes ParcelShops in Payzone outlets[22]
Response to controversy
As a response to the negative press regarding the economy service, Hermes have placed great investment [quantify] into the United Kingdom. In the end of 2017, the group launched the largest parcel sorting hub to increase network capacity which by extension, created roughly one hundred new low paid jobs.[23][24]
