Uk and Spain: same situation, different treatments

Uk and Spain don't update recovered people number since long time. Uk is marked as "no data". Spain is marked with the a updated on May. Why? Thanks. --Paolotacchi (talk) 06:17, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The cases are different. The UK stopped giving figures in March when the total was 135. Spain stopped on 18 May when the total was 150,376 and presumably no one has noticed until now. I suggest replacing the unreferenced note saying "Excludes serology–confirmed cases." with one saying that the figure for recoveries is as of 18 May. However, to avoid errors I think any changes should be made by someone who understands Spainish, which I do not. Dudley Miles (talk) 11:03, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done: 26.3 million is the correct figure per JHU and others. The numbers for individual countries may not add up to that precise figure, as many different sources are used for those countries, and some exclude figures counted in the JHU total. Add a disclaimer about totals not summing up properly?

After seeing Capewearer's response to a question, it occurred to me that we might want to append a footnote or similar stating that the sum of cases in different regions may not equal the total reported in the "Worldwide" row as the latter uses sources like JHU that differ from nation-specific sources. I'm not sure if the confusion is common enough to warrant an edit notice, but adding a disclaimer may help curb edit requests that point out the discrepancy. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:23, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Here's my proposed rewording for the footnote: The worldwide totals for cases, deaths and recoveries are taken from the John Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. Greece - Recovered Cases data is wrong and has no attributed source

Official data from Greece's government only tracks Total Cases and Total Deaths - covid19.gov.gr [1]

Google uses the data from this table to display the number of Recovered Cases in search results, but there is no source for where the current number comes from.

Ideally we would find a source for the current figure.

I suggest either changing Greece to "No Data" or returning back to the figure to 1374. Neither are good reflections of reality, but at least it's more consistent with other reports, like Johns Hopkins.

  • I found a figure of 1374 Recovered Cases that Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center uses for their statistics - it's not clear where that figure comes from.
    • Data can be found here: Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center-> Global Map -> look at Global Deaths columns and select Global Recovered[2].
      • Greece has 1374 as of Sep 8, 2020.
  • This same figure of 1374 comes up again on Covid Checker by Sitata (Enter "Greece" and then click on COVID-19 stats)[3]. Once again, it's not clear where Sitata pulls their Recovered Cases data from.
    • Of note is that the last time data was changed was on Apr 30, 2020 when the Recovered Cases changed from 577 to 1374.
  • While the aforementioned references are for from ideal sources, it should be noted that even the Our World In Data datasets do NOT provide any data for Recovered Cases for Greece.
    • Their data is hosted here on GitHub via covid.ourworldindata.org [4] and their ever-updating CSV dataset can be accessed here[5]

Better not to echo an out-of-date figure, even if it is used by JHU. Is there any statement available from the Greek government that they would stop releasing recovery figures from a certain date (as with the UK and Netherlands), or commentary from reliable sources that they had done so (as with Brazil, for a time)? Source for the US data

Why does the table use a Chinese website as the source for the United States' numbers? That seems odd, especially since all the entries seem to use data from a domestic source.

New cases, prevalence and incidence

As useful as this table is, it would be much more so still if it included not just the total number of cases but also the following:

  • New cases (last 7 days, or 7-day moving average)
  • Prevalence (total cases per 100k inhabitants)
  • Incidence (last 7 days, or 7-day moving average)

Adding the prevalence would help identify locations hit hard by the pandemic. To give but one example, Albania and Norway have about the same number of cases right now, but Norway's population is almost twice that of Albania, so COVID-19 is substantially less prevalent in Norway than Albania.

New cases would help in identifying current hotspots. For instance, India's seeing a lot more new cases than the USA at the moment, even though the USA have (so far, still) had more cases overall.

Finally, the incidence would be useful for the same reason that the prevalence is. To use India and the USA as an example again, although India has more new cases overall than the USA do at the moment, this is offset by its much larger population; the incidence is actually lower still in India than it is in the USA.

7-day aggregates or moving averages for the latter two metrics would help smooth over ,,bumps``.

I realize that this would create additional work for editors. However, the necessary calculations could be carried out by templates/Lua modules (I'm actually surprised the rows in this table are still hand-generated, as it were), and besides, the benefits of having these additional figures available to what may well be tens of thousands of readers at a glance far outweigh the costs.
