ON 14 September 2020, a Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, India. After fighting for her life for two weeks, she died in a Delhi hospital.[1][2]

The victim's brother claimed that no arrests was made in the first 10 days after the incident took place.[3] After her death, the victim was forcibly cremated by the police without the consent of her family, a claim denied by the police.[1]

Incident

The incident took place on 14 September when the victim went to a farm collect cattle fodder. The victim was dragged away by dupatta around her neck injuring her spinal cord in the process. The girl was allegedly raped by four upper-caste Thakur men. She was left paralyzed with a severe spinal cord injury which doctors earlier said could have been permanently damaged. The accused had tried to strangulate the girl as she resisted their rape attempt. Police were able to record the victim's statement on September 22.

The victim was initially admitted to the Aligarh Muslim University's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital 15 days ago with her tongue cut off and spinal cord severely injured, among other serious injuries. She was later shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in the national capital after condition worsened. The police said the victim had been dragged into a field and gang raped. She had also been strangled with her dupatta. The victim died on 29 September 2020.[4]

Hathras police have arrested the four accused — Sandip, Ramu, Lavkush and Ravi — on charges of attempt to murder and gang rape[5] for for gang rape, attempt to killing and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.[6] SSP Vikrant Vir had transferred the SHO of Chandpa police station to police lines for failing to promptly act in the case.[7] The State government and district administration has provided a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the victim's family.[8]

The victim was cremated on night of 29 September 2020 without family's consent.[9][10] However Prashant Kumar, ADG (law and order) said family consent was taken.[11]
