Susan Poser (born September 7, 1963) is currently the Chief Operating Officer, Provost, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at University of Illinois at Chicago where she has been since February 1st, 2016.[2] On December 9th 2020, it was announced that Dr. Poser would become the 9th President of Hofstra University, effective August 1st, 2021, succeeding retiring President Stuart Rabinowitz.[3] She would be the first female president of the university since its founding in 1935.

Early Life

Susan Poser was born to Norman Stanley Poser (born May 28, 1928 in Hampstead, London, England[4]) and Miriam "Mimi" Poser (née Kugelman; October 17, 1930 Moers, Germany[5] – October 31, 2019) on September 7th 1963 in New York, New York. Her father Norman had immigrated to the United States from Genoa, Italy on the SS Conte di Savoia, on November 14th, 1939 along with his brother Joseph and sister Elizabeth when he was just eleven years old.[6] Norman would go on to be an attorney for the Security and Exchange Commission, the senior vice president of the American Stock Exchange from 1972-1975 and executive vice president from 1975-1980.[7][8][9] He is also a Professor Emeritus of Law at Brooklyn Law School. Her mother Miriam had immigrated to the United States from Germany on the SS Washington with her father Siegfried, her mother Marion and her sister Bertha on May 20, 1936 during the occupation of the Third Reich to escape persecution for being Jewish.[10][11] She would become the Officer for Development and Public Affairs for The Guggenheim and hosted a show called "Round and About the Guggenheim".[12]

Education

Poser graduated from Swarthmore College in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Ancient Greek and Political Science. Between her time at Swarthmore and the University of California Berkeley, Poser held teaching positions at both Anatolia College and Armstrong Preparatory School as an English teacher from 1985-1986 and 1986-1987, respectively.[13] After receiving her J.D. from Berkeley in 1991, Poser clerked for Dolores Sloviter, who was the Chief Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.[14] Poser served as a Zicklin Fellow in Ethics of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.[15]

Career

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Poser began to work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1994, as a visiting professor of Law.[13] She officialy became a part of the faculty in 1999. During that time she also received her P.h.D from Berkeley in 2000.[16] In 2003, Poser was appointed by the Nebraska State Bar Association to review policies in the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which resulted in her publication of Multijurisdictional Practice for a Multijurisdictional Profession.[16][17] In 2004, Poser was awarded the College of Law's distinguished teaching award.[18] In 2005, she would receive the State Bar's Shining Light Award for her work.[19][20] Poser was appointed as the associate to chancellor Harvey Perlman in 2007 and serve until 2010. She became a full Professor of Law in 2008. Poser was then appointed University of Nebraska College of Law's Dean in 2010. The semester before, Perlman wanted to appoint her as a provost, but the proposal was rejected.[21] Poser would oversee the law school and have numerous justices and scholars come to speak including Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Clarence Thomas.[22][23] Additionally, the school had jumped 33 points in the law school rankings in the U.S. News & World Report College Rankings.[24]

University of Illinois at Chicago

She was then appointed the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois-Chicago on February 1st, 2016. During that time, many initiatives were initiated, most notably the acquisition of John Marshall Law School making it the first public law school in Chicago.[25] Poser oversaw the highest student enrollment ever at the University as it set records for six years in a row, culminating with a 33,598 student enrollment in 2020.[26]. However, her tenure also saw a strike from graduate assistants and teaching assistants in regards to pay. This strike would last about three weeks and cancel over 550 classes.[27][28]

Hofstra University

Organizations

Poser is a member of numerous organizations including the American Law Institute and The Chicago Network. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Noble Schools, a charter school system in Chicago and the surrounding area. She is licensed to practice law by both the Nebraska State Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

Personal Life

Poser is Jewish on both her mother and father's side.[30]

Poser is married to Professor and Researcher Stephen DiMagno, and they were married at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.[31]

In the Congressional Record of the Senate on April 27th, 2000, Poser signed a letter along with over 300 law professors opposing the Victims' Rights Amendment.[32]
