My Little Pony is an upcoming computer-animated fantasy film directed by Robb Cullen and Jose Uche, with Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis producing and Mark Fattibene directing. Based on the toyline of the same name by Hasbro, the film will be the start of the fifth incarnation of the franchise, while also serving as a direct follow-up to the fourth incarnation. Originally set to be released theatrically on September 27, 2021 by Paramount Pictures, My Little Pony will be released on Netflix in fall 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Synopsis

Set years after the events of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Pony Life, the film will center on Sunny Starscout, an outcast and young activist who still sees hope in an Equestria where Twilight Sparkle's teachings on friendship and harmony have been replaced with paranoia and mistrust, and where all three species of ponies live segregated for one another. However, when she meets a lost unicorn named Izzy, the two embarc on an adventure involving musical numbers, conspiracy theories, and "the world’s cutest flying Pomeranian" as they travel to new lands while facing their fears and turning enemies into friends.[1]

Development

In February 2019, it was reported that Hasbro was developing a computer-animated My Little Pony feature film.[2] Reports later said that the film would mark the beginning of the franchise's fifth generation,[3] which was confirmed in September 17, 2020;[4] My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic creator Lauren Faust first hinted the Hasbro was working on the fifth incarnation in 2018, when she denied any involvement on the franchise's next incarnation,[5] while Twilight Sparkle voice actress Tara Strong said that she wouldn't reprise her role in the fifth incarnation in April 2020.[6] In October 8, 2020, it was reported that the fifth incarnation, including the film, will center on a new set of characters, througth with the possibility of characters from the previous incarnation appearing.[7]

In February 12, 2021, it was reported that Robb Cullen and Jose Uche will serve as directors, while Mark Fattibene is set to co-direct the film.[9] Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis were also announced as producers for the film.[9]

Television series

A computer-animated television series set based on the film is currently in development.[11] The series will center on the adventures of Sunny Starcout and her friends after the events depicted in the film.[11] The series will be released on Netflix.[11] In March 2021, Cort Lane joined the series as an executive-producer.[12]
