Chaminade High School is a Roman Catholic high school for boys located in Mineola, New York. In 1930, Alexander Ott, S.M., a member of the Society of Mary, founded the school.

The school, long noted for its academic excellence, has a student body of 1600 with both lay and religious faculty. Students follow a rigorous liberal arts curriculum, including four years of Religion, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language (French, German, Latin or Spanish), Mathematics, Science, including Earth Science (Oceanography), Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, as well as three years of Fine Arts and one year of Health.

Qualified students also have the opportunity to enroll in a full year of collegiate study. Professors from Long Island University directly teach at the school. Over 99% of Chaminade graduates attend college. [1] In 2006, all 390 graduates were accepted into college, with 265 offered scholarships[2].

An extensive selection of extracurricular activities bolsters Chaminade's outstanding academic program. Most students partake in one or more school activities and more than half participate on interscholastic athletic teams.{{Link}}

The teams are named the Flyers - in honor of and in recognition of the first non-stop transatlantic flight from the U.S. to Europe (Paris) in 1927 by Charles Lindbergh from nearby Roosevelt Airfield (now the location of a major shopping mall). The school paper is the Tarmac.

Chaminade is also one of the only high schools in America to own and operate a pipe organ similar to those found at Radio City Music Hall in New York City

Athletics

Over the years Chaminade athletic teams have established top programs in baseball, bowling, cross country, track & field, swimming, soccer, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, and lacrosse. Its crew team is among the top teams in the nation, winning the Head of the Charles Regatta in two of the last four years.

The Swim Team has been undefeated in the CHSAA for numerous years and in the 2004-2005 season, they were ranked number one in the state out of all public and private high schools. In that same year the swim team was ranked #11 in Dual Meets in the nation for a Class 10 - Boys Independent High School with over 900 students.[1]

Former linebacker of the Detroit Lions, Steven Boyd (1995-2002; jersey number 57) has recently been employed to Chaminade High School as a part of their Physical Education department and a coach of their football team.

Notes

Chaminade is well known for its academic rigor and its success in forensics. The Robert C. Wright Speech, named after the CEO of NBC, Debate Team consistently competes with Long Island's Catholic Forensic League and regularly competes on the national debate circuit.

Chaminade is also known for its out-spoken opposition to American "prom culture." On November 29, 2005, Chaminade cancelled its junior prom and senior prom following the same decision by an affiliated high school, Kellenberg. Chaminade's president, Father James Williams, noted his opposition to the "over-the-topness" of contemporary prom culture adding that a high school social event should not amount to a contest to see "who has the biggest limo, the most elaborate weekend planned -- the prom is no longer the focus."[3]
