Technical question

Taking this as an example: if the name of the WP page is (for instance) Pando, Uruguay, displaying it as such instead of "Pando, Uruguay" is not considered overlinking is it? In cases like this, the link is that of a CITY/VILLAGE that happens to have the country attached to it, at least that's how i see it.

Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 09:36, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's may not be overlinking, as we're not linking to the country's page, but it's an appropriate use of piping. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:17, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Honours

Domestic titles are listed at the top according to what? There were no official consensus on this, while Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players#Honours still suggests that continental titles are listed first, followed by domestic league, national cup, league cup, and supercup(s). Snowflake91 (talk) 17:41, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Snowflake91: I hadn't realised the MoS was laid out that way! I've rarely ever seen honours ordered that way in practice so I'm curious as to how the MoS came to be that way. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:43, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mattthewhite. I saw that you reverted my insertion of this template at the norwegian this season topscorer of the champions league, Erling Haaland. and you added a question in your edit summary. why don't you redirect that question to the templates talk page og its wikiproject instead of just commenting it ? Best regards Migrant (talk) 00:09, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

AC Milan

Regarding Thiago Silva and other player articles. I was trying to follow the somewhat tentative consensus to make it AC Milan per the comments from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 120#A.C. Milan or Milan?. I did change on a number of players to AC Milan, I see a lot of player info boxes as just Milan which does bug me out. Govvy (talk) 19:26, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Govvy: Thanks, although I'd say there wasn't much of a consensus for anything one way or another from that discussion. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:00, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sergio Agüero

Hey Matty,

You reverted my Sergio Aguero edit for lack of sources. He already has a section about his move to Barcelona with a confirmed and reliable source, that has been accepted. Therefore I didnt find it necessary to put a source on me editing his current club, when the section about his move to Barcelona is already present, sourced and accepted.

He doesn't join Barcelona until 1 July, which is already stated in the Barcelona section. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:32, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In that case its understandable why you would revert my "current club" edit. Thanks for the clarification. But why revert my edit on his Senior career then?
He isn't a Barcelona player until 1 July so we shouldn't be including them in the infobox until then. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:42, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

UEFA Champions League reference

Please respect other editor's work. When Chelsea won the Europa League back in 2019, we use BBC Sport as the reference and you didn't have problem with it but what's the problem now? I'm using BBC sport as the reference but you keep reverting. Don't be arrogant just because you're the admin here. I will admit my mistake if I do something wrong but this time, I'm running out of patience because I didn't do any mistake here. I'll keep using BBC sport as the reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BPL2007 (talkcontribs) 18:17, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@BPL2007: You're not the only one running out of patience. 8th place for an award? Being in a video game team of the year? Come on. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:55, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Doubt

I think the pertinent discussion was held some time ago (at WP:FOOTY, most likely), but i can't remember when, so i ask your reliable opinion as an admin (i also don't known if you engaged in the talks back in the day):

this guy most certainly does not pass WP:NOTABILITY (only lower league and amateur football thus far, at age 34). I also fail to see how on earth he meets the GNG criteria (i suppose he has an acceptable number of news articles in the Galician media, but that's it), could you (re)enlighten me please?

Thanks in advance (this just in, found this diff https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joselu_(footballer,_born_1987)&diff=615885638&oldid=615883900, you did weigh in on the topic; do you remember the outcome?)! --193.137.135.2 (talk) 10:54, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion of edits with no clear reasoning

Your reversions of my removal of content may be reasonably adjudged to lack coherence:

Your persistent inclusion of club youth honors on Mason Mount's page lacks consistency, for there is a lack of inclusion of youth club honours on several other pages, and does not align with the template on WP: Football.
You removed Gabriel Martinelli's FA Cup win (he played 3 games in the competiton). In comparison, Christian Fuchs played a single game (15 minutes, to be precise[1]), yet is listed as a winner.
My edits on Sergio Agüero's page refers to consideration to lucidity in relation to temporal distinctions; stating "in the summer of 2021, he signed for Barcelona after his contract with Manchester City expired" can be reasonably deemed inessential, for my sentence ("in 2021, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer") retains the crux of the information, but disseminates it in a pithier format.

Please explain the reason for your edits vis a vis generic talk page statements threatening a ban(s). MrloniBoo (talk) 23:20, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Re Mount: The Player MoS doesn't make reference to youth club honours either way. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As that is the case, the only logical and consistent conclusion would be to not include them; the page makes explicit references to youth international honours, which are widely included. It can be expected the same to occur with that which is not included. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:30, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Re Martinelli: I did indeed, because the reference you cited didn't even make mention Martinelli's name. I've removed the honour from Fuchs' page, as I don't think a club source is adequately independent enough to reference a club honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
While Martinelli did not play in the final or is cited in that source, three games played is considerable enough to give way to the FA Cup as an honour. But for the sake of referencing, he can be seen to collect a medal here.[2] Additionally, there is a logical inconsistency in your statement that a club source is not "adequately independent enough" to reference a club honour; it is reasonably certain Leicester (and to a wider extent, every other club) will not fabricate what their players have won. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:30, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Re Agüero: If you could dumb that down a bit, I'd appreciate it. Too many clever words for me. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The argument regarding Agüero's page mentions the differences in our statements; while there are similarities with "in the summer of 2021, he signed for Barcelona after his contract with Manchester City expired" and "in 2021, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer", the second is objectively more succint, while retaining everything the first had to say. In turn, it provides better clarity. MrloniBoo (talk) 18:30, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jorginho

Do not remove sourced content on the honours section of the player.--Oluclen (talk) 09:52, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The content being sourced is immaterial when the honours aren't notable: finishing in what is effectively last place in a tournament isn't grounds for inclusion as an honour. You're welcome to raise this at WT:FOOTY if you believe this is wrong, but edit warring isn't the way to go. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:30, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jack Grealish

Hi, I'm not sure why my edit was removed. The image was sourced from Wikimedia Commons and yet you've accused me of uploading it, which I did not. I simply found it and linked to it. I see it has now been removed, but I don't wish to be unfairly tarred with this brush when I sourced the image fair and square, and it seemed it had been uploaded and checked and was OK to use. It's not my fault a copyrighted image was allowed on the Commons, is it? ScouseSocialist (talk) 20:16, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ScouseSocialist: The image was removed because it is a copyright violation. I didn't accuse you of uploading it: I left the message on your talk page as you added it to the Grealish article. My advice would be to be judicious with images on Commons, as people often upload images that are not released under a free licence, and therefore can not be included on Wikipedia pages. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:31, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Honours

Is this an acceptable edit (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=F%C3%A1bio_Vieira_(footballer,_born_2000)&diff=1027688511&oldid=1027686018)? Runner-up honours at a Under-21 Euro (where physical medals are awarded), especially in cases such as this where the subject almost does not have any accolades to "cause clutter"; user in question has quite the history of doing this...

Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 13:05, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would say that's notable. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:28, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for input. Speaking of (potentially) wrong edits performed without one word in summary, what's your intake on this (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fernando_Llorente&diff=1027706463&oldid=1027674594)? No further edit wars from me, i guarantee you, it stays how the other party wants! --85.243.89.253 (talk) 19:16, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Restored, as it's in the honours section. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:51, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Blackpool F.C.

Would you mind intervening over there when you get a moment? An editor keeps adding a "1 July" subsection to the squad section for some reason. I've reverted twice. - Seasider53 (talk) 21:10, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted as it's unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:24, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The reason it was added was because they were players who had signed for the club but are not able to join until 1st July, same as the ones who will be leaving the club on the same day.

As for citing sources, no other club squad lists have any sources showing. Smithy53 (talk) 01:30, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, plenty of club articles do list sources for squad lists so that's not correct, and even if it were, it wouldn't make it right. Mattythewhite (talk) 00:33, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like me to delete the list of players from each clubs Wiki page where they are not linked to a source? Or do you want me to provide a list of Wiki pages so that you can delete them? If you're going to do it for one then you should do it for them all, you've got to show that you are being consistent. Smithy53 (talk) 16:01, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd rather see them sourced, although I don't see why that's my responsibility just because I reverted an unsourced change on one page. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:16, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

But surely you've got to delete the other pages that don't have sources just to show a bit of consistency, or do you just do it to keep another whinging editor happy? Smithy53 (talk) 17:39, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't think that necessarily follows. Reverting an unsourced change at one club article doesn't oblige me to trawl through the pages for the rest of the 92 to inspect their squad sections. And, to be fair, the other editor wouldn't be whinging (to use your term) had you provided a source for your change in the first place. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:45, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Doubt

Don't know if it's a guideline that we must adhere to or not or only an aesthetical preference, but why do some users insert international goals as a sub-sub-section instead of a sub-section (i.e. William Carvalho)? It looks darn ugly in my humble opinion, all lop-sided (but if it's a guideline for reasons that elude me for the moment, of course i'll abide by).

Attentively --85.243.89.253 (talk) 23:21, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, although really it shouldn't have a heading at all, per WP:FOOTY/Players#Career statistics. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:32, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

unprompted message

Yeah, hi, who are you and why are you sending me a message accusing me of making an unsourced edit on a page that (to the best of my knowledge) I have never seen in my life? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.115.127.110 (talk) 12:54, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@87.115.127.110: Hi, the message I left was made in response to this edit which came from your IP address around a year ago. IPs don't always remain static so someone else was probably assigned your IP at that time. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:28, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matty,

I fixed some spelling and grammatical errors on the Ruben Dias page and even tweaked his height, which was provided by Transfermarkt. You reverted the changes under the premise that Transfermarkt is an unreliable source, and that's why I'm wondering why it is considered one. The website over there is accurate, checked by analysts, and even used by big managers and clubs worldwide.

Thanks

P.S. I can see that the Dias page has been fixed to the benefit of correct wording by someone else.
